9% increase in total global PC shipments in 2021

Recently, the latest data released by Canalys shows that global PC (including tablet) shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021 fell 7% year-on-year to 133.7 million units, but total PC and tablet shipments in 2021 increased by 9%, only slightly lower than 500 million units. Tablet shipments fell 21% y/y to 41.9 million units due to high saturation in the consumer and education sectors, while Chromebook shipments fell 66.3% to 4 million units. For the full year of 2021, Chromebook shipments grew 10 percent, while tablet shipments were nearly flat, down 1.6 percent.

In the global tablet market ranking in the fourth quarter of 2021, Apple maintained its leading position with 16.4 million iPad shipments, down 14% year-on-year. Samsung ranked second in the fourth quarter of 2021 with shipments of 6.8 million units, with shipments down 31% from a year ago. Lenovo tablet shipments fell year-on-year for the first time in 2021, with shipments of 4.7 million units. Amazon and Huawei are in the top five, with shipments of 4 million units and 2.2 million units, respectively.

Chromebook shipments fell for the second consecutive quarter, down 66 percent, as education and consumer demand retreated from highs in the fourth quarter of 2020. Overall, despite negative growth over the past two quarters, the Chromebook market grew by 10% in 2021. This creates a large user base in the education and consumer markets and also indicates the future growth potential of the market.

Canalys said all major Chromebook vendors were struggling in the fourth quarter. Focusing on the less volatile European market, Acer avoided the same sharp decline as other suppliers and topped the list with 910,000 units in the fourth quarter; Lenovo shipped 749,000 units in second place, down 73% year-over-year; HP saw the largest decline among the top five suppliers, with shipments of 471,000 units, down 87% year-over-year; Asus achieved 18% market share, becoming the third largest Chromebook supplier; and Dell with 641,000 units Taiwan's shipments ranked fourth.

It is worth noting that across the PC market, including desktops, laptops and tablets, Lenovo maintained its dominance, shipping 26.5 million units in the fourth quarter of 2021. Despite an 8% decline in total shipments, Apple still ranked second with 24.3 million units in shipments. HP sold 18.6 million units in the fourth quarter of 2021, ranking third, down 3% year-over-year. Dell came in fourth, with shipments up 9 percent to 17.3 million units, and its market share grew by less than 2 percent from the previous year. Samsung shipped 7.9 million units, ranking in the top five.
