The Torino scale is a set of indicators used to measure the impact of negotiable objects on earth, including asteroids and comets. Astronomers and the public are usually given a numerical value to assess the severity of their celestial body's impact on the Earth. A similar indicator is the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale, but slightly more complex than the former.

The Turin Hazard Index uses integer values between 0 and 10, with "0" representing a negligible chance of hitting the Earth or burning up its atmosphere before hitting the Earth, while a "10" represents a high chance that the object will hit the Earth and be large enough to cause a global catastrophe.

The Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale is a logarithmic scale used by astronomers to assess the potential risk of a neo falling earth from a near-Earth object ( NEO ) . It combines the probability of impact and the kinetic energy effect produced to estimate a single hazard value. Its rating from 0 means that the hazard is the same as the background hazard (defined as the value of the average number of years of risk posed by a recurring impact on an object of the same size or larger from a past date). The value of +2 shows an increase of more than 100 times the random background risk. A numeric value with a result less than -2 reflects that the event may not have existed. When the Palermo Impact Hazard Index is between -2 and 0, it indicates a situation that must be carefully monitored. Another non-scientific descriptive scale similar, but not so complex, is the Turin Hazard Index.
