Recently, "The Change and Development of the Chinese Language in the 40 Years of Reform and Opening Up" by Dai Zhaoming and others was published at the Commercial Press as the result of the project funded by the National Social Science Foundation.

This book has the characteristics of innovation of theoretical concepts, comprehensive display of integration, originality of unique performance, etc., and is a new achievement in the study of contemporary Chinese changes with sociolinguistic theories and methods.

In its preface, the results of investigation and observation and analysis are presented to the academic community.

Preface

The manuscript of this book was originally the result of one of the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" projects of the Ministry of Education's humanities and social science research, "The Changes and Development of Chinese Written Language since the Reform and Opening Up". The project was approved in December 2001, but due to the busy teaching work of the researchers, the change of the research team, and the fact that the content involved in the project was too extensive and complex, it was not completed until 2010. Then, in 2012, the project results were approved by the National Social Science Fund as "Changes and Development of Chinese Language Since Reform and Opening Up". It is still because of various reasons that it is difficult to say that our later research has not progressed quickly, and it has been delayed until now to submit the final project. The end of the project coincided with the 40 years of reform and opening up, so it was changed to the current title as the title of the book. Although the slow completion of the project is not good, it also provides us with more opportunities and more time to observe the changing Chinese language in the new era, so that we can get a slightly clearer view of the complex and changing language phenomenon. The results of our investigation and research and observation and analysis are hereby presented to the academic community, and I invite Fang Jia to criticize and correct them.

There are a few issues that need to be explained here:

(1) "Since the reform and opening up" in the project name refers to the period from 1978 to the first half of 2018 after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee in 1978, so the general reference in the writing is "40 years".

(2) Although the name of the project funded by the National Social Science Fund in the later stage has deleted the word "written language" in the original project name of the Ministry of Education, the research object has not changed. "Written Chinese" is traditionally understood to refer to the language and writing on printed matter and publications, but the language and script displayed by electronic technology are read in the same way as the traditional written language, so it is also included. Only spoken language, including everyday spoken language, broadcast language, host language, interview language, etc., are not the research objects of this project. This treatment is limited by strength and has nothing to do with importance.

(3) The "change" and "development" in the name of this project have both connections and differences, and there is analysis in "Introduction". However, it is easy to say in theory, but it is often difficult to distinguish in practice, so if it is not particularly necessary, it is only referred to as "change and development".

(4) The researchers of this project hold the sociolinguistic view of language. Unlike the structuralist, atomistic, statically synchronic, closed, abstract view of language, sociolinguistics, regardless of language and speech, holds that the life of language lies in its use, and that any language is a language in use, dynamic, and changing. Therefore, this project not only pays attention to and examines the changes and development of the structural units and organizational systems of the Chinese language, but also pays attention to and examines the meaning and color of the language units, and the changes and developments of rhetorical means and styles in the use of language. Any variation and change in language form and asana is all related to the realization of its social function, so this project makes a special chapter on the change of language style and the change and development of title language, and examines and analyzes the corresponding social background and social function.

(5) The manuscript of this book is divided into two types: "ordinary manuscript" and "case study". "Ordinary manuscripts" are manuscripts formed by dividing the topics into parts and studying them separately, while "case studies" are drafts formed by selecting smaller and more concise topics within the scope of the research tasks of each part to be studied. Most manuscripts of "case studies" have been published in academic conferences or journals and have been revised when they were included in this book. In order to facilitate the distinction between the two kinds of manuscripts, we have marked them separately after the table of contents and titles of the relevant sections of "Case Studies" (see "Examples" IV.3), and those that are not marked are "ordinary manuscripts".

(6) Language confusion, in fact, is not real language change, not development, but speech error, the study of it belongs to the category of language education, language evaluation and language management, but a language confusion was once a concerned social language use problem, the second is also related to the revision and implementation of language norms, and a considerable part of the development of language will be reflected in the new norms, so a special chapter to explore it.

(7) The number of corpora cited in this book is huge, and the sources are newspapers and periodicals, books, dictionaries, dissertations, web pages, corpora, WeChat public accounts, etc., and there are many kinds of sources. In order to guarantee the reliability of the scholarly analysis of this book, we have tried to enclose the source and time of the citations in as far as possible. Some of the corpus listed by the combination is from the reference literature, and some of it is collected by the writers, and it is difficult to indicate the source uniformly, so it is not marked.
