Beijing, 26 Jan (Xinhua) -- On 26 January, a reporter learned from the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of Tibetan Plateau research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences) that relying on the Institute's National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center, more than 4,600 scientific data sets on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and surrounding areas have been collected and released, providing important data support for the development of scientific and technological innovation and earth system scientific research in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau region.

The 2021 work meeting of the National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center and the launch meeting of the Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences were held in Beijing on the same day, and Li Xin, director of the National Tibetan Plateau Scientific Data Center and director of the Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced that the National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center was officially established and operated in 2019, and is one of the first 20 national science data centers and discipline data centers of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in China, responsible for the collection/transfer, storage, management, integration, mining, and collection of scientific data on the Tibetan Plateau. Analysis, sharing, application promotion and international exchanges, is the only data center in China with the most complete and authoritative category of scientific data for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and surrounding areas.

The National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center has integrated and released more than 4,600 scientific datasets (including more than 3,000 open access, accounting for 65%) and more than 50 key data sets in the fields of cryosphere, solid earth, paleoenvironment, land surface layer, human-land relationship, atmosphere, remote sensing, solar-terrestrial space physics and astronomy and oceanography. The center has taken the lead in developing a bilingual sharing platform in Both Chinese and English with open access as the mainstay, and has become the first scientific data warehousing center in China to pass springer nature certification, which is not only an important channel for Chinese and foreign scientists to obtain third-pole scientific data resources, but also an information hub connecting Chinese and foreign scientists to launch the Third Pole Environmental International Program (TPE).

At present, the National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center has more than 50,000 registered users, with a cumulative page visit of more than 150 million and an average monthly download volume of 50TB. In 2021, the center served and supported a total of 689 scientific research projects, and its multidisciplinary data strongly supported major scientific research and discoveries in the fields of cryosphere changes, Asian water towers, ecological changes, disaster early warning and remote sensing inversion under the background of climate change, and provided data support for revealing the processes and mechanisms of environmental change in the third pole region and its impact and response to global environmental change, and improving regional disaster prediction, early warning and disaster reduction capabilities.

Li Xin said that the National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center is positioned as the Data Science Innovation Center of the Earth System on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the data platform for major national needs such as the Qinghai-Tibet Scientific Expedition, the data bank for the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Research Project, the data hub for international cooperation on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the data window for public science on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and the booster for the big data industry on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In 2021, the Qinghai Branch Center and the Tibet Branch center of the National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center were officially established, and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Science Data Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was identified as making important progress in the construction of information infrastructure, data platform development, data resource integration, data product development, big data analysis, sharing and service, international cooperation and talent team construction, etc. The research team will strive to build the National Tibetan Plateau Science Data Center into a world-class geological science data center.
