Starting from a tent, the Chinese Academy of Sciences Everest Station "Growth Record"

Lhasa, 9 May (Xinhua) -- Today, the Everest Comprehensive Atmospheric and Environmental Observation and Research Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is full of people and is very lively.

The Everest Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences is located in the Rongbu River Valley of Tashi Zongxiang, Dingri County, Tibet Autonomous Region, 30 kilometers away from the Base Camp of Mount Everest Mountaineering, and in the past 17 years since its establishment, it has gradually become a comprehensive observation and research station with complete facilities and complete instruments.

Seventeen years ago, the location of the Everest Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was still a desert beach full of gravel. In 2005, the fourth scientific expedition to the Mount Everest area was launched, and Ma Yaoming, the first director of the Everest Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that out of the need for scientific research, the task of building an observatory on the north slope of Mount Everest was put on the agenda.

At that time, the construction of the station and the scientific expedition observation mission were carried out at the same time, and the scientific expedition team set up a tent at the foot of Mount Everest. Ma Yaoming recalled that on the third day of the scientific expedition team stationed at the Base Camp of Mount Everest, they heard the crackling sound in the middle of the night, and when they opened their eyes, they saw the starry sky, and it turned out that the roof of the tent was thrown away by the fierce wind. "The sky should be covered, the earth should be used as a bed, and only the moonlight is by your side." Ma Yaoming said, "Meteorological instruments monitored, that night the wind exceeded 11 levels. ”

With such an experience, Ma Yaoming has strengthened his determination to establish a field station that can be monitored and stationed.

In order to find the ideal place to build a station, Ma Yaoming's footprints traveled to all corners of the Everest area, and after months of running, when he returned home, his ten-year-old daughter did not recognize his father, who was tanned by the plateau sun.

Ma Weiqiang, the current station manager of the Everest Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, recalled that in the early days of the establishment of the station, he was Ma Yaoming's doctoral student, from Shigatse City to Everest Station, the road was very bumpy, the car ran up and rattled, and people sat in the car upside down and touched the roof of the car, left and right.

At the beginning of the construction of the station, there was no mobile phone signal at the foot of Mount Everest, and the builders could only run from the station to the nearby quzong village to contact the outside world by landline. "When I went from the village to Dingri County, I kept staring at my mobile phone, hoping to have a signal soon so that I could report to my family that I was safe." Ma Weiqiang said.

Ma Weiqiang has experienced the expansion process of the Everest Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences from tents, movable board houses to buildings, and has also witnessed the development and growth process from the atmospheric physical observation of a single element to the current comprehensive observation of the atmospheric environment, glaciers, hydrology, ecology and geophysics.

After 33 years of working on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and engaging in Everest scientific expeditions for 18 years, Ma Yaoming has long fallen in love with this land, he likes to see the sunshine of Mount Everest, the wind and clouds, but also endures high reaction and loneliness. "We have filled the gap in the country's scientific research observation in the Everest region, and the persistence of the scientific research team has not been in vain, and we have achieved many proud results." He said.

At present, the "Peak Mission" Everest scientific expedition is in full swing, and the Everest Station of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has become the most important scientific expedition camp. Ma Yaoming said, "This Everest scientific expedition will definitely raise the scientific research level of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau to a new realm. ”
