"The world has been suffering for a long time." Netizens' attitude towards CNKI is evident.

As a Chinese database with domestic popularity and paper load at the forefront, CNKI has been questioned by "academic monopoly" and "borrowing chickens and eggs". Recently, the News that the Chinese Academy of Sciences has discontinued CNKI because of the "nearly 10 million level" renewal fee plan has once again pushed CNKI to the forefront.

According to Red Star News, an email from the Documentation and Information Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences circulated online, pointing out that "for many years, cnki database has maintained a high increase in renewal prices by virtue of its influential market position in the Chinese journal database market." "In 2021 and 2022, the total cost of the CNKI database subscription of the CAS Group reached the level of tens of millions, and the high renewal fee was the primary reason for the suspension of cooperation by the CHINESE Academy of Sciences.

The relevant person in charge of the Library Department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences confirmed the news to "Red Star News", and the Chinese Academy of Sciences will deactivate the CNKI database from April 20, 2022 and replace it with Wanfang and Weipu.

On April 19, CNKI's official WeChat public account responded that the services of CNKI and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have not been stopped or interrupted, and will continue to provide normal services to the institutes affiliated to the Chinese Academy of Sciences until the 2022 annual agreement is signed and the service is started.

The "medical community" noted that CNKI's response did not mention tens of millions of renewal fees and renewal price increases.

What happened to "CNKI", the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that it would be deactivated!

The "expensive" of CNKI has been deeply rooted in the hearts of the people.

The "medical community" learned from the Chinese government procurement network that in the 2022 Chinese electronic resource procurement project of Guangzhou Medical University, the winning bid amount of CNKI (CNKI Database & China Citation Database) was 855875 yuan, the winning bid amount of Wanfang and Weipu, which the Chinese Academy of Sciences plans to replace CNKI, was 228211 yuan and 97,000 yuan respectively, and the winning bid amount of the Chinese medical journal full-text database & China Knowledge Base commonly used by medical students was 97,500 yuan, and the price of CNKI far exceeded that of other databases. In addition, Guangzhou Medical University also purchased a CNKI college student paper testing system worth 58,000 yuan.

In addition to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, at least 6 universities in the past 10 years have announced the suspension of the use of CNKI due to price increases:

In December 2012, the Library of Nanjing Normal University announced that due to the excessive price increase of CNKI's CNKI database merchants, the two parties had not reached an agreement on the use of the library platform, and would suspend the use of the library platform from January 1, 2013.

In 2013 and 2016, Wuhan University of Technology announced the suspension of CNKI due to price increases. According to the Graduate Student Association of the School of Automobile Of Wuhan University of Technology, CNKI database increased by 11%, 24% and 20% respectively between 2011 and 2013. From 2010 to 2016 (quoted) the increase was 132.86%, with an average annual increase of 18.98%.

After two suspensions, after consultation, Wuhan University of Technology resumed the use of CNKI twice.

Peking University, Taiyuan University of Technology, Nanjing Normal University, Jinling Institute of Science and Technology and other schools have issued similar notices.

On April 1, 2016, Peking University Library wrote in a statement: We are still negotiating with Tongfang CNKI (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd., and strive to adhere to reasonable conditions and not easily compromise with excessive price increases by merchants.

In 2014, CNKI's offer for Yunnan University rose from 400,000 yuan to 700,000 yuan; since 2013, capital normal university has spent 1.5 million yuan, 1.7999 million yuan and 2.1599 million yuan on CNKI. THE PRICE INCREASE OF CNKI IS MORE THAN 10% EVERY YEAR, AND THE PRICES QUOTED ARE "DEAD NUMBERS" AND THERE IS NO ROOM FOR NEGOTIATION.

Why is CNKI increasing by more than 10% every year, and colleges and universities can only grit their teeth and pay? The article hits the nail on the head:

"CNKI also has a strong monopoly - it is not only a Chinese database with domestic popularity and paper load, but also approved by the relevant departments as the only academic electronic journal in the mainland to officially publish doctoral dissertations." It is precisely because of the uniqueness that it restricts the user's freedom to choose to use other databases, and CNKI also has the confidence to use its monopoly position to arbitrarily increase prices. ”

CNKI's company is Tongfang CNKI (Beijing) Technology Co., Ltd., and the financial report of Tongfang shares shows that in 2020, the main business income of CNKI is 1.168 billion yuan, and the gross profit margin is as high as 53.93%. Corresponding to the price increase and high gross profit margin over the years, the manuscript fee paid by CNKI to the author is very low, and even some scholars have not received the manuscript fee.

In December 2021, Zhao Dexin, a retired professor at Zhongnan University of Finance and Economics and an economic historian, accused him of being included in more than 100 articles by CNKI without his knowledge. After Professor Zhao Dexin sued CNKI in court, he was awarded 700,000 yuan in compensation. The old man won the lawsuit but since then all the articles have been removed from CNKI.

Some of the teachers who participated in the work with Professor Zhao Dexin were reluctant to sue CNKI together for fear that the article would be removed or no longer included.

Yesterday, according to an interview with the Yangtze River Daily, CNKI issued a note to apologize to Professor Zhao Dexin, but has not yet discussed with him about the paper on the shelves. This clearly violates the original intention of CNKI-sharing and disseminating academic achievements.

After Zhao Dexin's lawsuit against CNKI sparked a heated discussion, on January 6, Zhong Weimin, a professor at Tsinghua University, said, "CNKI started by squeezing the rights of scholars and journals, and with the expansion of CNKI users, scholars and journals have been inseparable from CNKI." Therefore, the hatred and love for it, the division of body and mind, resulting in authors and academic journals not only dare not offend CNKI, but even often ask FORE. ”

THE PROBLEM OF COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT BY CNKI HAS EXISTED FOR A LONG TIME. Li Min, a senior partner at Hansheng Law Firm in Shanghai, told Zhongxin Jingwei that "most authors publish papers in order to disseminate their own views, not to obtain benefits, so even if the authors know that they have been infringed, they will not claim rights in order to expand the influence of the paper." ”
