Recently, we've talked about the fact that almost every tenth of the cars sold in Europe are Volkswagen. Statistics for 2021 continue to emerge. Motor1's reporters studied 12 markets and ranked the best-selling cars among them.
Do not consider this material to be a global rating. After all, here, for example, there is no information about sales in the Chinese market, which is one of the largest in the world. There is no information on other major car consumers. But there are data about some of our neighbours and a few very exotic countries.
Ukraine
Let's start with ourselves. Despite the widespread popularity of used cars, Ukrainians bought 103,300 new cars in 2021. That's a 21 percent increase from a year ago. The most popular new car among Ukrainians is the Kia Sportport crossover – 7,124 sold. The Toyota RAV4 came in second with 6,066 units. The Renault Duster ranks in the top three with sales of 5,602 units. Therefore, the 3 most popular models in Ukraine (18,792 units sold) are crossovers.
United States
Due to chip shortages, the U.S. market has yet to recover to the metrics it was before Covid. However, of the 12 countries represented here, the states lead by considerable margins. As for the models, everything is stable here – all 3 first places are occupied by pickups. The top 3 models sold a total of 1,825,157 units. By the way, the Ford pickup is the most popular car in Canada – 111,332.
Brazil
Brazil's three most popular models were originally designed for the Latin American market. First place in Pikafiat Strada. Following the compact hatchback - Hyundai HB20 and Fiat Argo in 2nd and 3rd place. Sales of three of these models were 280,206 units.
Italy
The top three of Italy's most popular cars are made up of older models. All three models are Italian compact hatchbacks with 200,852 units sold. The first is the Fiat Panda, which also has an all-wheel drive version, which is a good choice for the mountains. The three-door Fiat 500 came in second, and the Lancia Ypsilon came in third.
France
In France, everything is also stable in terms of car preferences. The top 3 are dominated by French models, if I could say sandero, and like Italy, they are compact hatchbacks. The Peugeot 208 is in the lead, and the Renault Clio isn't the best-selling for the first time since 2004. The top three are the aforementioned Sandero, which is sold in France under the Dacia brand. Sandero's sales growth was considerable: +44%. Perhaps recent generational changes have affected the sales of this "Poor Renault". The total sales of these three models were 250,474 units.
Indonesia
Ukrainians know nothing about the Indonesian auto market. However, there is a real leadership battle between Japanese automakers and homegrown models. For 14 years, the Toyota Avanza compact crossover has been the unchanged sales leader here. However, for some reason, in 2020, the Honda Brio topped the list. Toyota was upset and released a new generation of Avanas, which will regain its lead again in 2021. The second place was also occupied by the Mitsubishi Xpander, which we don't know. By the way, this compact crossover is 4.4 meters long and has 3 rows of seats. In third place is the Suzuki Carry kei truck. The total circulation of this Trinity is 127,479 units.

Germany
Unsurprisingly, Europe's most popular brands have won all 3 awards in the country. Volkswagen Golf is traditionally ranked first in Germany. It confidently leads its closest competitor, but its sales are steadily declining. Golf will account for 3.5% of the German market in 2021, the best since 1980. The second and third places clearly show trends in consumer preferences. The T-Roc and Tiguan crossovers lag far behind the Golf, but they are also to blame for their declining popularity. Sales of these three models were 204,572 units.
turkey
Turkey is quite close to Ukraine 5-10 years ago in terms of cars. For its own "automotive industry", Turkey has introduced a protection tax. Cars can be imported for no more than 3 years, and customs clearance is 100% of the market value of automobiles. There are indeed very significant differences with Ukraine. While we produced Daewoo Lanos, Chevrolet Aveo and Lacetti, Chinese and a small number of other (not always relevant modern models) models, we assembled very good cars in Turkey. These are often contemporary modern models. Cars made in Turkey are well known to Ukrainian drivers. The Volkswagen Caddy officially delivered to us was assembled in Turkey. The compact Renault Clio Symbol sedan also attracts many Ukrainian drivers. This list can go ahead.
As for Turkey itself, the sales leader here is the Fiat Egea, a Tipo sedan. It is worth noting that in Turkey, Fiat has long been loved by local motorists. Admittedly, in 2021, the Toyota Corolla will begin to approach the location of turkey's Tipo, even surpassing the Renault Clio HB. The total sales of these three models were 127,479 units.

It's worth noting in the UK market that electric cars are indeed growing in popularity here, as evidenced by the appearance of the Tesla Model 3 in the top three sellers. As for Britain's best-selling car, it's not as stable. In a way, we can say that Ford is stepping on its own feet: The new Puma compact crossover has won some buyers of Fiesta hatchbacks and has been a bestseller since 2009. And in 2021, he didn't even make it to the top three. Vauxhall Corsa (uk version of Opel Corsa) took advantage of this situation. In second place is the aforementioned Tesla Model 3. In third place are the three- and five-door Mini hatchback families. It was not reported whether the figure took into account sales of the electric Mini.
Argentina
According to the tastes of buyers, argentina's auto market is close to that of the United States. They also love pickup trucks here, despite other models. However, for the first time in 3 years, the best-selling car in the country is not the Toyota Hilux. It was followed by the compact Fiat Cronos sedan. The third line of volkswagen Amarok. The combined sales of the top three models were 83,162 units.
Spain
In 2021, Spaniards bought the most Seat Arona. This compact crossover has been in production since 2017 and is gradually becoming obsolete. The silver and bronze winners were the new models. The redesigned Hyundai Tucson has been a true sales hero in Spain and is expected to top the sales charts in 2022. Now, just selling a few hundred cars isn't enough for him to win. Dacia Sandro is not far behind. In addition, it is also a new model that offers a very good set of options and techniques to save money.
Hungary
In the local market, the trend dominated by Suzuki is obvious. There are several objective reasons for this. In poor Hungary, where fuel is very expensive, Suzuki also produces small economy models and, importantly, inexpensive models. Outside of big cities, you can come across cars like Suzuki Ignis at almost every turn. Well, Suzuki has been assembled in Hungary since 1991. The most popular car in our neighborhood is the Suzuki Vitara crossover. The second-selling suzuki S-Cros (the successor to the popular SX4). Third place was the Fiat 500, which was both logical and unexpected. Cheap and economical. The total sales of the top three hungarian markets were 19,344 units.
