In the course of the investigation, the police learned that Alvarez met with his 17-year-old ex-boyfriend Frank Deleon Jr. at around 9:30 p.m. on the 11th and confronted de Léon about deLeon's long-term relationship with another girl when he was dating her. The Houston Police Department said Deleon fired 22 shots in her back that day.
Alvarez's mother, Anna Machado, said on the 18th that DeLeon was her daughter's ex-boyfriend, and shortly before she was shot, he had texted asking her to meet him at the scene of the crime. Machado said the two had been dating for less than a year and she had never seen any red flags, but the relationship was "intermittent" and "my daughter was always crying for him."
