Today, our country is prosperous and strong, the country is safe and secure, and even in many ways we are at the forefront of the world. And the reason why we have been able to achieve such achievements is that countless revolutionaries of the older generation have struggled all their lives to earn it. Among them, Peng Chong is undoubtedly an outstanding representative.
In 1915, Peng Chong was born into a very poor peasant family in Zhangzhou, Fujian Province. At that time, the Republic of China had just been established, but China was still in a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society, and the people's life was still very difficult. In the face of such a dark social background, the young Peng Chong was also very disgusted by it, so he made up his mind to study hard and save the country and the people when he grew up. In his youth, he had the privilege of being exposed to Marxism in school. Therefore, he knew very well from the bottom of his heart that only Marxism and the Communist Party could save China. In August 1934, he also became an honorable member of the Communist Party.
When the War of Resistance Broke Out, Peng Chong was also assigned important tasks by higher-level party organizations. He was responsible for forming a progressive literary and art society and conducting literary and artistic tours in the southern Fujian region of Fujian, in order to cooperate with the party's anti-Japanese literary and artistic united front. Not only that, he also used the troupe to perform and set up many service groups for resisting the war and saving the country. Under the influence of their team's theatrical performances, more than 3,000 people joined the anti-Japanese armed groups.
Later, when the New Fourth Army was established, Peng Chong continued to be entrusted with heavy responsibilities by the party organization and served as the deputy head of the propaganda team of the political department of the second detachment of the New Fourth Army, specifically responsible for publicizing the idea of resisting Japan and saving the dead. In 1938, he was also successfully elected as the first secretary of Wuxian County to contribute to the Anti-Japanese War, and then he also became the political commissar of the Independent Regiment of the Sixth Division of the New Fourth Army because of his outstanding work performance, and was also responsible for leading the anti-Japanese work in Taizhou.
In the period of the Liberation War, Peng Chong still made great contributions to the cause of liberating all of China. It served as the director of the political department of the 18th Division of the Sixth Column in the East China Field Army, and participated in some very famous battles, such as the Battle of Suzhong and the Battle of Lunan.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Peng Chong began to work in Fujian Province. Later, the superiors considered that he had worked in Jiangsu for a long time, so in 1954 they transferred him to Jiangsu as the secretary of the provincial party committee. By 1955, Peng Chong had become the mayor of Nanjing. During his time as an official in Nanjing, he always cared about the people and did a series of practical things for the people. Therefore, in the eyes of many ordinary people in Nanjing, he is a good mayor and a good secretary in the eyes of the people. Under the leadership of Secretary Peng, Nanjing has also changed from a consumption-oriented city to a production-oriented city.
In 1968, Peng Chong successfully became the deputy secretary of the Jiangsu Provincial Party Committee, and his work at that time was mainly to assist Xu Shiyou, who was then the first secretary of Jiangsu Province, to build the Yangtze River Bridge. During this period, he was mainly responsible for production. At the same time, he deeply realized that Nanjing is a famous historical and cultural city in China, so he paid special attention to the protection of Nanjing's historical and cultural relics during his tenure as an official in Nanjing. Therefore, many of the monuments in Nanjing City today were protected in the hands of Secretary Peng.
Due to his outstanding performance in Jiangsu Province, the higher-level party organization decided to entrust Peng Chong with another heavy responsibility. So after 1976, Peng Chong entered Shanghai to work, and successively served as the third secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, the chairman and first secretary of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and the mayor. During his tenure as an official in Shanghai, he always maintained the working attitude of doing practical things for the people for many years. Therefore, during his presidency, he not only rehabilitated many old cadres who had been wronged, but also paid great attention to the development of Shanghai's economy, such as the Shanghai Baoshan Iron and Steel Company, a leading steel company in our country, which he was responsible for founding. In this way, under the leadership of Peng Chong, Shanghai's economy has been rejuvenated with new vitality, and Shanghai has also ushered in a new development.
In 1977, Comrade Peng Chong also became a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee, and the following year he was successfully elected vice chairman of the CPPCC. In 1983, he became the deputy director of the National People's Congress, and later he was fortunate to accompany Deng Gong to the northeast to inspect and find a good recipe for the transformation of the northeast.
On October 18, 2010, Peng Chong, a tried-and-tested communist fighter, died at the age of 96
