"They are not afraid of the police"! Three New York police officers were shot in the first three weeks of 2022 and calls for reform are running high

2022 has just begun, but the statistics of gun violence in New York City are already shocking. So far, three New York police officers have been shot.

On New Year's Day, a police officer on leave slept in a car in East Harlem, waiting for the next shift, and was shot in the head, according to Fox5. On Tuesday, in the Belmont district of the Bronx, a teenager believed to be a gang member injured himself and police while twisting a gun and misfired. On Thursday alone, there were two incidents of shooting at police. During a drug crackdown on Staten Island on Thursday morning, a detective was seriously injured in a shooting. Later in the afternoon, while New York police were pursuing the burglar, the man opened fire on police and, in the final standoff, was shot dead by the police.

The proliferation of gun violence on the streets has raised alarms among local officials, law enforcement and residents.

Vincent Vallelong, president of the Sergeants BEnevolent Association (SBA), said they weren't afraid of the police, and they wouldn't hesitate to pull out a gun and shoot at a uniformed police officer, and that's the problem.

Mayor Eric Adams and police chief Kechant Sewell have both vowed to make the city's streets safer, but many wonder how they intend to turn things around.

Paul DiGiacomo, president of the Detectives' Endowment Association, has asked lawmakers in the state legislature to rescind bail reform. He argues that the bail reform law is directly related to the surge in violence and guns on the streets today.
