【News Express】Pang Keyang reported from Los Angeles

Last week, a 16-year-old girl was shot to death, and her body was dumped off Highway 110 in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles City Police Department (LAPD) is currently assisting the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in investigating the murder, asking for clues from the public and calling on the killer to turn himself in.

On the evening of Tuesday (18th), the family of 16-year-old victim Tioni Theus held a vigil for her outside the 77th Street branch of the Los Angeles City Police Department.

According to police, the California Highway Patrol received an alarm at around 8 a.m. on January 8 and found Thueus' body on the ramp southbound of Manchester Avenue on Highway 110.

Los Angeles County Coroner said Thueus died of a gunshot wound to the neck and there is currently no information about the exact location of her death, as well as the suspect.

Ten days after the crime, no one had been arrested, and Thuus's family and the South Los Angeles community appealed to police to get justice for her. The California Highway Patrol is currently in charge of the investigation of the case, and the Los Angeles City Police Department is assisting in the investigation.

Los Angeles Police Commissioner Michel Moore attended the vigil of Thuus on the evening of the 18th, he said that he was trying to help the California Highway Patrol to bring justice to the victims, he pleaded with the public to actively provide clues, and called on the suspects to voluntarily turn themselves in.

The father of Thuus introduced the same day that he lost his 19-year-old son five years ago and his 16-year-old daughter today. Thueus' mother was seriously injured in a hit-and-run traffic accident in 2019 and is still hospitalized. Theeus is a happy, energetic girl with a bright future and doesn't know why anyone would hurt her.

Representatives of south Los Angeles community organizations were in attendance that night, calling on police to ensure public safety and demanding that street gangs hand over the killers and "not let our children be killed and thrown on the highway."

In recent days, there have been a series of vicious attacks in los Angeles, including january 10, los Angeles police officer Fernando Arroyos, who was on duty, was robbed and shot by gang members while inspecting a house with his girlfriend; on January 13, 70-year-old nurse Sandra Shells was seriously injured by homeless people while waiting for a bus at the station; and on January 13, Brianna Kupfer, a 24-year-old UCLA graduate student, was stabbed to death by homeless people in the furniture store where he worked.

Moore said on the 18th that the past ten days have been a difficult time for the city of Los Angeles, and this series of vicious cases has occurred in a row. The police station stands with the Los Angeles community. Over the past year, there has been a surge in violent cases in los Angeles under the COVID-19 pandemic, from tracking home robberies to organized department store smashing, and the police department, with the support of the city, has worked hard to increase patrols and resources for the community, arrest criminals, and fight crime.

"We will continue to work hard to bring justice to victims and arrest suspects, because protecting and serving the community is an sworn commitment of our police department." Moore stressed.
