The first large-scale excavations took place at the end of the Tang Dynasty. The third time occurred in the early years of the Republic of China, when warlords were fighting and digging ancient tombs became a common practice. Under the guise of protecting Qianling, the Kuomintang general Sun Lianzhong led his subordinates to garrison Qianling and used the method of real guns and artillery exercises to cover the troops of a division to excavate Qianling. The soldiers used explosives to blow up many places, but they could not find the entrance to the cemetery. Later, when the soldiers were blindly digging, suddenly a thunderstorm broke out for several days, and rumors spread in the army for a while, saying that Wu Zetian had manifested the clouds and could not be excavated, and Sun Lianzhong hurriedly led his troops to leave Qianling.
At present, many experts believe that Qianling is the only tomb in the Tang Eighteenth Tomb that has not been stolen and excavated. The reason is that the Qianling Tomb Road is complete, and the Tomb Road, from the belly of the stone mountain to dig a new hole into the underground palace, is very difficult, and no new robbery cave has been found at present. However, no one is 100% sure whether the facts are really as we expected.
