Apple is reportedly stepping up production of the 5G iPhone SE, which could be released in April or May.

The report quoted display industry consultant Ross Young as saying that the panel production of the display for the iPhone SE 3 will begin this month, and the actual production of the phone itself may start in March.

Apple shares edged lower in the intraday on Wednesday, down 0.7 percent at $168.59 as of press time.

The design of the new iPhone SE is expected to be very similar to the current model, with a 4.7-inch display, home button and Touch ID.

Ross Young has proven to be a reliable source of information about apple product displays, including providing extensive details about the iPhone SE 3. Last year, he accurately revealed that the new iPad mini will have an 8.3-inch display and remove the Home button. He also took the lead in breaking the news that the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will be equipped with ProMotion displays.

In addition to the 5G-enabled iPhone SE, Apple is likely to launch a new iPad Air at the spring conference, and may also launch some new services as in previous spring conferences.

While the iPhone SE doesn't represent Apple's latest and greatest design, the model is highly anticipated and will be the most affordable iPhone ever to support 5G. One analyst even believes that the 5G-equipped iPhone SE 3 is expected to attract 1 billion Android phone users to switch to Apple.
