01, 6 years old lost his left eye to translate "genius"

02, is he a "genius disease"? How to recover?

In the past two days, an article "Hangzhou man calls from the funeral parlor: can you write about our genius son" has been screened on the whole network, known as the Chinese version of "Beautiful Mind".

This article is a self-narrated article by the father of Jin Xiaoyu, a patient with "bipolar disorder" in Hangzhou, who tells about his son's tortuous experience of illness and his achievements in translation.

Because the article involves the mental illness of "bipolar disorder", an alumnus of Fudan and a friend of the public account Big V specially forwarded the article to me and asked my opinion.

I was also very impressed after reading it. From a professional point of view, my main feelings are 3 points:

First, from the perspective of scientific psychopsychology, Jin Xiaoyu is likely not a typical bipolar disorder, and he may be overdiagnosed;

Second, Jin Xiaoyu is 50 years old and has been battling the disease for half a lifetime, but if his family can see the root cause of the problem and take appropriate measures, he may still achieve basic recovery.

Third, Jin Xiaoyu's achievements are mainly due to his love for translation and his persistent dedication and efforts, which are not directly related to the bipolar disorder. Don't always think that bipolar disorder is a "genius disease", which is not conducive to accelerating the recovery of patients.

Jin Xiaoyu was born in the Shuxiang Mendi family, his parents are high-level intellectuals, and the family has an older brother.

Jin Xiaoyu, who came from a good background, completely disrupted his life due to an accident when he was 6 years old. The neighbor kid put a needle in the toy pistol and finally shot it into Jin Xiaoyu's left eye, which blinded him from then on.

This incident not only caused Jin Xiaoyu great pain, but also caused him great psychological trauma.

Jin Xiaoyu's father did not explain how the follow-up matter was handled, but Jin Xiaoyu's parents, who were well educated and kind-hearted, may choose tolerance and forgiveness, and eventually the big things became small things.

If this is the case, this may have caused a lot of psychological trauma to Jin Xiaoyu, and he will be very depressed.

But Jin Xiaoyu is very sensible, and he in turn comforts his parents, "It's okay, get used to it."

Later, Jin Xiaoyu and his brother both grew up. Both of them had good grades, and Xiaoyu's brother was admitted to Fudan University and later went to Australia to study. Xiao Yu was in the top class in his first year of high school, and the teacher said that it was no problem to enter the university.

But Jin Xiaoyu's father recalled that one day, the younger son suddenly said, "I don't go to college, and I don't want to go to high school." ”

The father did not explain why. But it is conceivable that a blind and visually impaired child in the left eye will inevitably suffer from strange eyes in school, and even be ridiculed and bullied by classmates.

Jin Xiaoyu did not want to go to school, most likely because of these superimposed psychological traumas, and he felt disgusted, rejected, and even feared the school and those classmates. He will even think catastrophically, self-denial, feel that what is the use of his good grades, and not be looked down upon everywhere?!

After Jin Xiaoyu dropped out of school, his parents found several jobs for Xiaoyu, such as a sales clerk at Xinhua Bookstore and a worker in an exhaust fan factory, but Xiaoyu either had an argument with customers or was ostracized by his co-workers, and he couldn't work in a few days.

From the perspective of scientific spiritual psychology, At this time, Jin Xiaoyu had already undergone obvious paranoid personality changes. He has suffered superimposed psychological trauma, and he has low self-esteem, is very sensitive and suspicious. Customers and co-workers may indeed discriminate against him, but some may be unintentional words and deeds, and some may even be well-intentioned concerns.

However, this can easily anger Jin Xiaoyu, causing him to often clash with people in interpersonal relationships, and constantly form new superimposed psychological trauma. He is more sensitive and suspicious, paranoid and irritable, and enters a vicious circle.

After that, Xiaoyu became depraved and decadent, lying in bed all day, emotionally unstable, always losing his temper, like a changed person, and also developed to smash the furniture and electrical appliances in the house.

In fact, when he remembered some traumatic events, his heart was very painful and angry, and he couldn't help but vent his strong negative emotions.

Jin Xiaoyu was miserable, and his parents were desperate. To their great surprise, suddenly one day, Xiaoyu decided to go to college.

Jin Xiaoyu's parents immediately found him a cram school. Although Xiaoyu basically did not go to high school, after a few months of bad compensation, the college entrance examination results were surprising: only 3 points away from a line.

Jin Xiaoyu's second volunteer filled in the Department of Foreign Languages of Hangzhou University, and his score also exceeded the admission score. The family was very happy to wait for the school's admission notice, who knows, the school will return the file, the reason is Xiaoyu was undisciplined in high school, missing classes.

In the end, Jin Xiaoyu went to another university. But after a year of school, he fell ill again and had to drop out again.

But Jin Xiaoyu did not give up his studies, he buried his head in self-study at home, and in only two years, he got a self-examination diploma from the English Department of Zhejiang University.

But at the same time, his mood swings are getting more and more serious, 2 suicide attempts, severe insomnia, sometimes depressed, sometimes manic, unwarranted suspicion of others, and destructive behavior.

His parents took Jin Xiaoyu to the doctor, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and, although he took medicine, he could not fully control the condition. Every time Xiaoyu's mood fluctuated violently, his parents had no choice but to send him to the hospital for hospitalization, and since 1992, he would have been admitted basically every year.

What exactly is bipolar disorder? Jin Xiaoyu's father had never heard of it. But after his son fell ill, he read a lot of related books.

Two of those points, he said, were slightly comforting.

One is that usually such patients rarely have this thought after one or two suicide attempts, and they will cherish life more than before;

The second is that such patients will be extraordinary in the spiritual field, and even show genius creativity.

Among them is a book written by an American psychiatrist, "Manic Depression and Many Talents", which lists 25 historical celebrities: Beethoven, Van Gogh, Newton, Hemingway... They have all their lives typical manifestations of bipolar disorder, suffering beyond ordinary people, but they are all genius artists with great imaginations.

Jin Xiaoyu's father did not care whether his son was a genius or not, only hoped that he would live.

During this time, Jin Xiaoyu's condition went up and down. He especially loves to read, and the books he wants, his parents will save money and buy them for him.

In 1993, Xiaoyu's parents also spent a lot of money and risked being smashed by their son to buy a computer for him, Xiaoyu was particularly happy, and never touched the computer when he was angry.

He also never played computer games, mainly using the computer to teach himself foreign languages and watch acoustic movies.

Jin Xiaoyu spent 6 years constantly learning on his own, learning German, Japanese, and consolidating his English. He most often went to the Zhejiang Library, and read all the foreign language novels in it.

Opportunities are left to those who are prepared. In 2010, Jin Xiaoyu's mother attended the 50th anniversary alumni association of NTU, and an old classmate was willing to give Jin Xiaoyu a chance to translate.

Nanda Publishing House sent eight short stories by American female writer Andrea Barrett and asked Xiaoyu to try one.

With his excellent language skills, he has done a very good job of translating. In the 10 years since, he has translated a total of 22 books at the rate of two books per year. It was a rare happy time for the whole family.

When translating the novel "Dog Son-in-law" by Japanese female writer Tawada Yezi, in order to improve the accuracy of the translation, Jin Xiaoyu watched Japanese sumo wrestling matches every day. I also blocked the subtitles with notes to exercise my translation speed.

Watching the two belt-belted Hercules on the screen rolling and fighting, the father and son laughed.

Jin Xiaoyu's translated manuscript was sent to the editorial department, and everyone rushed to be responsible editors. Because there are no typos, sentences, or mistranslations in the whole book, and every book is easy to sell. His translations, in addition to precision, also have a rich emotional charm, even more wonderful and delicate than the original.

Jin Xiaoyu's mother's Nanda classmate called to congratulate her, "You have raised a genius! ”

In 2015, Xiaoyu's mother fell ill and got Alzheimer's disease again, and she could not take care of herself and could only lie in bed. Xiaoyu was very sad, he took care of his mother's food and drink Lasa without complaint.

At the same time, Xiaoyu continued to immerse himself in translation, in addition to Nanda, there were also publishing houses that invited him to translate, the books were thicker than one, and the condition was significantly alleviated.

But in October last year, it may be because the newly translated book has not been published, or it may be because of his mother's serious illness, Jin Xiaoyu's condition has fluctuated.

One night, he took the train alone to Wenzhou, and when his father was in a hurry, he suddenly returned. A few days later, he knocked out the front teeth of one of the couriers as he crossed the street.

Then, the hospital sent personnel to pick up Xiaoyu, and he was admitted to the psychiatric ward again.

Just when Jin Xiaoyu was hospitalized, his mother died suddenly, but his father still hid xiaoyu.

According to the latest news, Jin Xiaoyu has now been discharged from the hospital, he read his father's self-reported article, and he also learned of his mother's death. He accepted this fact, and his father's heart let go.

Many netizens want to provide assistance to Jin Xiaoyu's family, more than 20 media want to interview him, and film and television companies want to make his experience into a movie.

But all this was rejected by his father, who only hoped that everyone would try not to disturb Xiaoyu, so that he could continue to live peacefully and engage in his favorite translation work.

As a psychiatrist, after watching Jin Xiaoyu's illness experience, I was very heartbroken.

Jin Xiaoyu experienced a lot of suffering from childhood to adulthood.

He lost an eye at the age of 6 and suffered great psychological trauma;

Later in school is likely to be ridiculed and bullied, dropping out of high school;

Frequent quarrels with people when trying to work;

It was difficult to get into the university, and then it was withdrawn from the university of your choice;

After attending university, he dropped out again due to illness;

He was repeatedly admitted to a mental hospital, forced to take injections and medicines, and may even be subjected to protective restraint measures, which may also humiliate him and form a superimposed psychological trauma...

Especially when he loses an eye at the age of 6, he is likely to develop acute stress disorder (ASD) and subsequently develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Only in that era, most people lacked relevant knowledge, and Jin Xiaoyu's parents also ignored it, and he failed to get diagnosis and treatment in time.

After experiencing so many psychological traumas, Jin Xiaoyu was once depressed, tried to commit suicide, and he had a major depressive episode, which is basically certain. But I think there are doubts about the "bipolar disorder" he was diagnosed with.

The public may not be familiar with the disease of bipolar disorder. This is one of the 6 major psychiatric disorders, and "lifelong medication", "poor prognosis", and "hereditability up to 80%" are common labels for this disease.

But after reading Jin Xiaoyu's father's self-report article, I think that if Xiaoyu has never been overconfident, arrogant, and uninhabited, then he is not a typical bipolar disorder.

He loves translation, sleeps and forgets to eat because of translation, inspiration emerges, and he feels happy when he is recognized by others, which is a normal reaction.

Especially for the depressed him, it is normal to be more excited than ordinary people when he is affirmed, more intoxicated and more energetic when translating.

In fact, this is a state of efficient work, similar to benign "work addiction".

It's just that this state is difficult to understand, and without this kind of life experience, it is easy to think of this state as the energy, running thinking and high emotions in the "hypomanic/manic attack", but in fact, he does not belong.

Judging from his father's self-report article, Jin Xiaoyu's so-called "hypomanic/manic attack" is more about smashing things at home, being restless, and having destructive behavior, the so-called "smashing people and destroying things".

This is actually the "agitated state" after a large number of his superimposed psychological trauma is activated, he is very painful, angry, feels that the fate is unfair and cannot be rewritten, so the emotions explode and vent the resentment in a fierce form.

But many psychiatrists will consider this to be "irritable", and then think of it as a hypomanic/manic episode, and then diagnose it as bipolar disorder.

Strictly speaking, this is controversial in the clinic.

Also, Jin Xiaoyu's unwarranted suspicion and blame of others is actually the embodiment of paranoid personality changes, because of years of experienced superimposed psychological trauma, he is like a bird of fright, very sensitive, suspicious, easy to take other people's good intentions as bad intentions, not a symptom of bipolar disorder.

Therefore, from the perspective of multidisciplinary diagnosis and treatment (MDT), I think it is more in line with Jin Xiaoyu's diagnosis, which should be a depressive disorder secondary to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with a state of agitation and a certain degree of paranoid personality change.

However, because Jin Xiaoyu can't work properly, has serious social difficulties, has no friends, and he likes to learn languages very much, he has a lot of time and energy to focus on foreign language learning and translation work.

And his tortuous life experience, more sensitive emotional responses, which makes his emotions more abundant, and his observation and understanding of human nature are more unique.

These factors prepared him for a career in translation, and he ended up with significant success. His father said that there is actually not much money as a translator, but the key is that Jin Xiaoyu has gained recognition and a sense of accomplishment from the outside world, and he has realized his self-worth.

Does Jin Xiaoyu's experience just confirm the statement of the book his father read:

Such patients rarely commit suicide after 1 or 2 suicide attempts, and often show genius creativity in the spiritual field.

In fact, it is not, this is the appearance. Many people with bipolar disorder, including those who are truly typical, may eventually be overwhelmed by the disease and choose to die.

Also, bipolar disorder is not directly related to "genius creativity." Jin Xiaoyu shines in the translation industry, mainly due to his love, long-term persistence and dedication to foreign language learning.

It's just that because of his illness, he has more time to study, as well as a more unique and delicate emotional experience. But this factor is not the main one.

In other words, one day after Jin Xiaoyu's true recovery, his translation talent will not disappear with the disappearance of the disease. On the contrary, he was able to turn his illness into a wealth of life and achieve greater success in his translation work.

Jin Xiaoyu may not know it himself, but now online, he is known as the Chinese version of "A Beautiful Mind".

The film "A Beautiful Mind" is based on a true story, and the protagonist Nash is a famous proposer of game theory and has won the Nobel Prize. But he suffers from schizophrenia, and at the end of the film, he does not fully recover, the hallucinations do not disappear, but he learns to live peacefully with the disease without its influence.

Will Jin Xiaoyu's future fate be better than Nash in "A Beautiful Mind"? Achieving true healing?

I think it's possible.

The root cause of his illness was the superimposed psychological trauma he suffered from childhood to adulthood. In fact, in the past ten years since he has been engaged in translation, because of the unlimited support, tolerance and care of his parents, as well as the sense of accomplishment brought by translation, he has some traumas that have been partially repaired, at least the relationship with his parents is relatively close, and the condition has also had a period of stability.

However, whenever he encounters some setbacks, blows, or thinks that others are targeting and discriminating against him, the superimposed psychological trauma he has suffered is easily activated, and then the mood fluctuates violently, and the behavior of hitting people and smashing objects occurs again.

In theory, deep hypnosis trauma repair technology (TPMIH) can repair the superimposed psychological trauma associated with Jin Xiaoyu's symptoms, and his emotional symptoms will be greatly alleviated or even disappeared, thus achieving rapid withdrawal.

After the trauma is repaired, he can completely get out of the pain of the past, and when he thinks about it, it is no longer pain, but calm, and he has a positive cognition and perception of the past, and his inherent good character of kindness, tenacity, and the pursuit of nobility will be strengthened.

Most importantly, after Jin Xiaoyu's related superimposed psychological trauma was repaired, he was able to communicate well with the outside world and live independently.

His translation work will go one step further, and it is not even excluded that he will meet the person who truly loves him and appreciates him, and harvest a happy marriage. At that point, his recovery experience will truly transform into a fortune in his life! This Chinese version of "A Beautiful Mind" will have a warmer and more inspiring ending!

If he can't accept deep hypnosis trauma repair technology (TPMIH), through the scientific coping and efforts of his family, Jin Xiaoyu may also gradually recover, but for a longer time.

I hope that his father can see the root cause behind his son's symptoms, consciously repair the psychological trauma that his son has suffered, and sincerely apologize to his son for the psychological trauma he has caused.

Jin Xiaoyu has no friends, the two fathers and sons depend on each other, and his father must become a mentor and friend who understands and respects his son.

He should try to avoid causing superimposed psychological trauma to his son. If his son gets into trouble, he should not think that his son is ill and sent to a mental hospital, which may continue to cause psychological harm to Jin Xiaoyu.

On the contrary, he can learn the trilogy of benign communication, learn to empathize with his son, listen, and actively guide, and resolve some of his not serious emotional fluctuations, which will further improve Jin Xiaoyu's condition, self-awareness and self-control ability have been significantly improved.

If the relationship between father and son is closer, coupled with Jin Xiaoyu's translation results and more and more recognition from the outside world, combined with standardized drug treatment, his mood will become more stable, and even towards recovery!
