Rolling in the snow, immersing yourself in the alleys, challenging yourself on the slopes... There is such a group of international students from tropical countries, and ice and snow have a natural attraction for them, just like studying in Beijing.

Therefore, when Beijing and the Winter Olympics met, they actively signed up for volunteer service, even if they had to pass several rounds of screening interviews and various trainings to get on the job, but also to make the dream of studying in China more exciting.

On January 15, at the Winter Olympics volunteer departure ceremony held at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, Bai Na, a Thai student, took the stage as a representative of international student volunteers to receive the condolence package, and she showed a confident smile in volunteer clothing.

Bai Na who "did not waste this trip"

Plunge into the snow and experience the biting cold; your nose is red, you laugh at the taste of snow; you just lie down and roll in the snow... In Bai Na's WeChat circle of friends, there is such a set of "snow maps", and the location is the University of Science and Technology Beijing.

Bai Na has been in China for more than two years and studied international trade at Beijing University of Science and Technology. Every time it snows in Beijing, she is so happy. "My family is in a coastal city in southern Thailand and can dive, but I can't see snow."

Bai Na, who has a unique affection for ice and snow, is in the graduation season, and even in the face of the pressure of thesis defense and job search, she still insists on signing up for volunteer work at the Beijing Winter Olympics. In her opinion, this is an important thing that "must be attended".

The university of science and technology Beijing international student volunteer registration began in June last year, after several rounds of screening, after preliminary review, submission of resumes, interviews and screening, can become one of them. In addition to the need for a high level of Chinese proficiency, knowledge about Olympic event services is also indispensable, and volunteers need to go through online learning and offline training before they can officially take up their posts.

Bai Na said that volunteers need to learn 23 compulsory courses and 2 elective courses online and take online exams to pass the test with a score of 85 or more. "It's so hard, some lessons have to be listened to several times to pass the exam."

However, when you get the qualification to volunteer, everything seems so meaningful. Bai Na said that it is a great honor to participate in the volunteer service of the Beijing Winter Olympics, and I feel that it is not a waste of time to come to China to study!" ”

Qiu Fang of "Connecting with the Olympics"

In 2008, a song "Welcome to Beijing" not only sang in the land of China, but also spread to neighboring Vietnam. Nguyen Thi Choi Phuong, who was in middle school at the time, remembered the catchy melody of the song and the picture of traditional Chinese cultural elements.

"I have been understanding and paying attention to China since the Beijing Olympics, and I have always longed for it." Ruan's Qiufang used fluent Chinese and clear logic to introduce his life experience of becoming acquainted with China and studying in Beijing.

Out of interest, she studied Chinese majors as undergraduates, and successfully applied to enter the University of Science and Technology Beijing after graduation, becoming a master's student majoring in international trade, and fulfilling the "Chinese Dream" of childhood.

Ruan Thi Qiufang, who was associated with China for the Beijing Olympic Games, said that she was "very proud and lucky" to be a volunteer for the Beijing Winter Olympics, and that it was a rare opportunity to participate in such a high-level event, hoping to help her better integrate into Chinese society.

In her WeChat video account, there is a video of her visiting the Beijing hutongs, and the background music is "Welcome to Beijing". "Beijing Hutongs, Taste of Ancient and Modern," Nguyen Thi Khần wrote in the caption.

"Bring your own skills" of intelligence

Playing soccer, volleyball, and watching ball games, Wang Zhiqiang, a Burmese international student who loves sports, never thought that he would learn to ski in China and participate in challenges.

In 2019, at the second "Belt and Road" Wulanchabu Ice and Snow Season and the National City Cup And Civil Olympic Games "Flying Snow Limit" International Challenge held in Wulanchabu City, Inner Mongolia, Wang Zhiqiang represented Myanmar in the competition, and he performed well in the competition shortly after learning to ski.

Skiing skills and participation experience became a plus for Wang Zhiqiang to be selected as a volunteer for the Winter Olympics. When asked by the interviewer how to understand volunteers and why they chose to be a volunteer, Wang Zhiqiang replied: "Volunteers are helping people in need, and I hope that I can serve others in Chinese." ”

"If you say Chinese, there will be more opportunities." Because he met a friend who worked in a Chinese company in Myanmar, Wang Zhiqiang came up with the idea of coming to China to learn Chinese and technology. Unlike the other two volunteers, Wang Zhiqiang did not major in Chinese as an undergraduate, and in order to study in China, he also spent a year studying Chinese.

Wang Zhiqiang, who now teaches control science and engineering at the University of Science and Technology Beijing, teaches Chinese, said he "wants to stay in China for a PhD."
