On March 17, 1951, the Fourth Campaign to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea had been going on for more than a month, and the Volunteer Army and the "United Nations Army" were engaged in a fierce battle in the area of Pyeongbuksan in Gono, Korea.
The commander of the 354th Regiment of the 118th Division of the 40th Army of the Volunteer Army decided to send the 2nd Battalion and 4 companies to seize the American position and hold on to the spot to cover the transfer of the main force.
The combat group led by Yu Tingqi, deputy squad leader of the seventh squad, made the most rapid progress, and they rushed and fought hard, and even seized three hills from the US army in a row.
Unfortunately, Yu Tingqi was seriously injured in the fierce battle, unconscious, and carried from the battlefield by hygienists.
After that, several more fighters died heroically, and only two fighters were left in the entire combat group, Zeng Nansheng (a native of Changsha, Hunan) and Li Kexian (a native of Shenyang, Liaoning).
The U.S. army will soon launch a major counterattack, and the seventh squad position not only has no heavy weapons, but also has little ammunition. What's more, Zeng Nansheng is only 18 years old and Li Kexian is only 21 years old, and neither of them has been in the army for a long time, and the situation is extremely unfavorable for them.
How to fight the next battle, they have no bottom in their hearts, they can only adapt to changes.
After consultation, they could only retreat to the last hill, collect guns and ammunition scattered on the positions, and prepare for the enemy's counterattack.
Not long after, the American troops did indeed kill, they first used artillery fire to bombard the three hills, the explosion was beyond recognition, and then the infantry launched an attack.
Li and Zeng saw about a platoon of American troops coming from both sides of their hill and decided not to easily expose the target and wait for the enemy to approach before fighting.
Because the entire hill was full of craters, coupled with the smoke and dust still floating on the position after the shelling, so that the two volunteer soldiers were hidden in the bomb crater, it was difficult for the American army to find them, and thought that there were no volunteers on the position.
On several occasions, Zeng Nansheng was ready to raise his gun and shoot, but li kexian stopped him. Because Li Ke first found that the US army may have the illusion that there was no one on the position, he acted very careless and lazy.
It is unimaginable that these two young soldiers actually resisted the urge to jump up and shoot at the enemy again and again, so they lay quietly in the crater, watching one American soldier after another approaching, whistling and turning away.
What happened next made Zeng Nansheng and Li Kexian angry and funny—an American officer who looked like a platoon leader thought that he had occupied this "empty" hill, ordered the soldiers to sit around and listen to his instructions, presumably to rebuild the fortifications and so on.
Li Kesheng took a look, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to kill the enemy! He communicated well with Zeng Nansheng through his eyes and gestures, and the two men held submachine guns and grenades, and approached the enemy group silently with extremely stealthy movements.
The first "meet and greet" they gave to the enemy was five grenades. It is conceivable that the enemy was surrounded by a circle, and the five grenades were thrown in the center, which really did not waste any lethality, and blew up most of the American troops in that platoon on the spot. Suddenly, there was a creepy scream from the position!
Immediately afterward, Li Kesheng and Zeng Nansheng jumped up, armed with submachine guns, and shot all the bullets that had already filled the magazine at the enemy who had not been blown up.
Just as the two were pursuing and killing the enemy, the US artillery on the hill saw the continuous gunfire on the hill, mistakenly thought that the volunteer troops were counterattacking, and actually fired cannons at the top of the hill, and also dispatched planes to drop bombs and strafe.
As soon as the cannon sounded, Li and Zeng were alertly hidden in the crater, admiring this good scene of the US military killing each other.
It didn't take long for American artillery and aircraft to wipe out one of their own platoons and the other twenty or so enemy who were preparing to go up the hill to support them. Li Kexian and Zeng Nansheng were very lucky, but they were injured a little.
After the bombardment stopped, the U.S. army sent two more platoons to capture the hill. Knowing that the tactic of pretending to be dead could no longer be used, Zeng and Li took advantage of the complex terrain and the small number of people and small targets to adopt the method of "changing shapes and shadows" and started a guerrilla war with the enemy.
They were like two loaches in a rice field, With Hur facing east and Hur facing west, firing a few shots on one side and throwing a grenade over there.
Sometimes the two men fought each other, heading separately to contain the enemy; sometimes they hid together and discussed the way to attack.
These two young warriors seem to have found the fun of playing hide-and-seek with their friends in their childhood, and they have transformed into two naughty children, using your dead battlefield as a playground for playing with the enemy, but achieving incredible miracle results.
The US army was played by the flexible "loach tactics" of two volunteers, and it was completely unclear how many volunteers there were on this hill, so they had to aimlessly put a few shots.
In this way, Zeng and Li wandered around the position and circled with the enemy for nearly three hours, until they ran out of the ammunition they had brought and the ammunition they had picked up from the position, and then they "reluctantly" prepared to transfer.
Unfortunately, Li Kexian was unable to walk after being shot in the leg at this time.
Zeng Nansheng immediately gave him a brief treatment of the wound and prepared to transfer it immediately behind his back. But he was too small to carry the big Man Li Kexian.
Li Ke first looked at it, the enemy all pounced on this side, in order not to tire his comrades-in-arms, he resolutely refused to let Zeng Nansheng back again.
Zeng Nansheng's attitude is also very resolute, vowing to die and refusing to abandon his teammates. With amazing perseverance, Li Kexian pushed Zeng Nansheng away, dragged his seriously injured leg to crawl towards the enemy who was rushing over, and finally died with the only grenade he had on his body.
The task of covering the transfer of large troops was completed, and Zeng Nansheng eventually returned to his unit.
When the chiefs learned that Li and Zeng had relied on their flexible "loach tactics" to circumvent the enemy of a company for more than five hours and annihilate dozens of enemies, they could not help but be moved to tears and praised this battle as too peculiar, and could be called a classic battle of maneuverability and flexibility, and victory over more with less.
Martyr Li Kexian and Zeng Namsheng were honored with special merits and were awarded the honorary title of "Second Class Combat Hero" and the "First Class Soldier" Medal of Honor of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
On October 8, 1952, Zeng Nansheng was killed in the battle of Xiangdongli in Changfeng County, North Korea.
