In July 1953, the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea had come to an end, and in order to completely subdue the puppet army of Syngman Rhee of South Korea, he honestly obeyed the decision of the armistice. Our army decided to launch the Battle of Kimseong against the South Korean army, which was also the last battle on the battlefield of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
The volunteers attacked the South Korean Army in three ways, and the 68th Army of the Western Group was facing the enemy's heavily guarded 522.1 heights. The 6th Company of the 2nd Battalion of the 607th Regiment of the 203rd Division was responsible for capturing the unnamed heights east of the 522.1 Heights, which was the headquarters of the first battalion of the "White Tiger Regiment" of the enemy capital division.
In order to prevent our army from attacking, the South Korean army did a lot of defensive work on this five-heights, not only with a reinforced company of defense, but also in front of the position was covered with mines, and formed a solid fortification with four barbed wire nets, light and dark fire points and bunkers.
In order to destroy the enemy and capture the nameless heights, the 6th Company decided to attack with a platoon as the main attack and organized a commando team to quickly capture it. After reaching a platoon under the main offensive mission, the morale of the soldiers in the platoon was high, and they asked to serve as commandos. After receiving the red flag, Zhang Shixiu led all the commandos to swear an oath and assured the motherland and the people that the red flag must be firmly planted on the peak of the enemy's position. Zhang Shixiu then led the commando team to the attack position, hiding and waiting for the attack to be launched.
At 20:55 p.m., the battle officially began, and after the artillery began to extend, Zhang Shixiu immediately led the commando team to rush out of the position and launch an attack on the enemy. The commando broke through the enemy's three barbed wire barriers in one fell swoop, and as they reached the mountain beam in front of the fourth barbed wire, several of the enemy's bunkers suddenly opened fire.
Several bunkers immediately formed a cross-blockade wall of fire, suppressing the commandos behind a few large stones without even a chance to look up. Due to the sudden fire of the enemy, the commando team and the 1st platoon that followed were killed and wounded heavily. In the back of the 2nd and 3rd platoons, they were also suppressed by enemy artillery fire, and if the commandos could not break through the enemy positions as soon as possible, the whole company would be in a very disadvantageous position.
Seeing this situation, Zhang Shixiu was extremely anxious and must come up with a solution as soon as possible to open up the passive situation. In the case of the continuous sound of guns on all sides, Zhang Shixiu suddenly thought of the red flag he was carrying, he took out the red flag from his arms, put it on the flagpole, and then violently crossed out from behind the bunker.
The fiery red flag whistled in the wind, and Zhang Shixiu ran desperately with the flagpole in his hand. Although it was dark, against the background of artillery fire, the red flag was still bright and dazzling, and the South Korean defenders thought that our army had launched a charge, and the large and small fire points immediately shot at the red flag.
The soldiers of the 6th Company immediately understood why Zhang Shixiu was doing this, he wanted to use himself as a decoy to attract all the enemy fire. Taking advantage of the gap between the South Korean army's firing at Jang Se-so, the soldiers of the 6th Company immediately launched a charge and immediately conquered the enemy's first line of defense.
Platoon leader Lü Daqin found Zhang Shixiu in the enemy's first fortification, at this time Zhang Shixiu not only had a left shoulder wound, but also his left leg was also broken, through the wound you can see Bai Sensen's bones, and the blood has long stained Zhang Shixiu's clothes and pants red. Lu Daqin called for a hygienist and asked him to carry Zhang Shixiu on his back and bandage as soon as possible to stop the bleeding.
But Zhang Shixiu disagreed, saying: "Our volunteer army is not mud, a broken leg is nothing, I must complete the task of planting the flag on the enemy's position." After speaking, Zhang Shixiu once again braved the enemy's fire blockade to rush out of the bunker, and charged at the enemy position with one leg and a flagpole.
The bright red flag once again became the enemy's key target, and when there was still about 20 meters away from the main peak of the enemy position, a shell thrown by the enemy exploded next to Zhang Shixiu. This time, the shrapnel injured Zhang Shixiu's head and right leg and he fainted.
But soon, the sound of gunfire and the shaking of the earth woke Zhang Shixiu up, and at this time he could not stand, the blood blurred his eyes, and the red flag was half leaning on a stone next to him. Zhang Shixiu did not hesitate, once again clutched the red flag, braving the dense rain of bullets to climb to the top of the enemy formation.
With his whole body injured and his legs broken, Zhang Shixiu used all his strength to climb the 20 meters. We can't imagine how a seriously injured person could accomplish this feat, but Zhang Shixiu did it directly. He climbed to the main peak of the enemy position in a climbing manner, leaving a bloody road of more than 20 meters behind him.
Zhang Shixiu, who climbed to the main peak, had the last moment's idea before his life to keep the red flag from persevering, so as to attract firepower to reduce the pressure of the main force's attack. At this moment, Zhang Shixiu transformed himself into a flag platform, and fixed the flagpole tightly with his head and body, letting the red flag fly above the main peak of the enemy position.
When the enemy saw that the main peak had actually erected a red flag, he was terrified and immediately concentrated his fire on the red flag again. Because Zhang Shixiu greatly dispersed the enemy's firepower, coupled with the encouragement of Zhang Shixiu's heroic actions, the soldiers of the 6th Company rushed towards the enemy's position one by one, and the charge was deafening and resounded through the sky.
The red flag planted on the enemy's main peak, the volunteer soldiers who bravely charged, and the charge horn that shattered the enemy's guts completely destroyed the psychological defense line of the South Korean defenders, like the receding tide of the sea, running like crazy to the outside of the position, at this time, they hated that their parents did not give birth to two more legs, and the 6th Company finally succeeded in occupying the position.
At this time, Zhang Shixiu had already turned into something else, but he was still angry, staring at the position under the mountain that had just belonged to the enemy and had been occupied by us at this time. The red flag, which had been hit with bullet holes by enemy bullets, fluttered gently with the wind.
Inspired by Zhang Shixiu's heroic actions, the soldiers of the whole company immediately attacked the enemy in depth along the enemy's communication trenches, quickly destroyed all the enemy troops in the predetermined combat area, and successfully completed the combat task.
After the battle, Zhang Shixiu's body was transported to the rear, and the red flag was also taken off, and if you count carefully, there were 216 bullet holes of large and small sizes on the red flag of about one square meter. In this short battle of tens of minutes, it is conceivable that Zhang Shixiu has just suffered from how strong the fire is.
The most heroic witness, this flag, was preserved by Zhang Shixiu's unit, and later transferred to the Chinese Military Museum for collection and preservation. Zhang Shixiu was posthumously honored with special merit after the war and awarded the honorary title of "Second-class Combat Hero", and his glorious deeds will always inspire future generations.
