Harry was born in 1984 as the youngest son of Diana and Charles. But now that Harry is no longer a senior member of the royal family, how has his royal title changed?

Harry and Meghan are known to have given up their royal roles in 2020 and moved to the United States together to start a new life. After the 2018 tie-off, the couple performed official duties on behalf of the Queen and people had a lot of expectations for them. After their dramatic retirement from royal life, Harry lost several roles as an official patron of the royal family, and the way he used royal titles in public changed.

Harry and Meghan leave the royal family

In January 2020, Harry and Meghan posted breaking news on their now-defunct Sussex Royal Instagram account.

The couple announced that they intend to resign as senior members of the royal family and "create a progressive new role in this institution".

While the Sussex initially hoped to continue to support the Queen and "work towards economic independence", after lengthy discussions with the royal family, Meghan and Harry abdicated their official duties for good.

Buckingham Palace subsequently announced that Meghan and Harry would no longer accept public funds to perform royal duties and would not officially represent the Queen in an official capacity.

Upon hearing the news, the Queen issued a statement saying that after "months of conversation and recent discussions", she was "delighted that together we have found a constructive and supportive way for my grandson and his family".

In March 2020, Harry and Meghan returned to the UK to complete their last royal family event.

After their royal duties ended, they moved to the United States, where they now live in California with their son Archie and daughter Lilybert.

Harry or prince?

Harry was born with the title of Prince Henry of Wales because his father Charles was the legal heir to the throne.

Under the 1917 Convention made by King George V, Harry was entitled to the title of prince because he was the son of the monarch's eldest son.

When Harry married in 2018, the Queen awarded him the title of Duke of Sussex, meaning his new wife, Meghan, also received the title of Her Royal Highness duchess of Sussex.

By convention, the queen's children and the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales are entitled to the title of prince or princess.

But in 2013, the Queen made an exception by announcing that all of William's children would receive royal titles, which is why Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis all have titles, not just Prince George.

Although Harry is still a "prince", his son Archie and daughter Lilybert do not have the title of "prince" or "princess".

However, when Charles becomes the future king, Archie and Lillibert will be the grandsons of the monarch, by male ancestry, and then they may be eligible for the title of prince or princess.

How did Harry's title change after he left the royal family?

Under the couple's withdrawal agreement reached in 2020, Harry and Meghan have confirmed that they will no longer use the HRH (His Highness) title given to them by the Queen, but can retain the titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

There is precedent for members of the royal family to lose their status as Highness if they no longer perform their duties.

In the 1990s, after royals divorced, former spouses often lost their titles, as did Sarah Ferguson and Princess Diana.

Although both Sarah and Diana were allowed to retain the titles of Duchess of York and Princess of Wales, they were no longer allowed to use the title of Princess in public.

However, Prince Andrew's daughters Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie both hold the title of Princess Highness, which is unusual because neither of them is a member of the royal family.
