There is a lot of fat in the abdomen, and the muscle is easy to lose! Not only is walking slower, but it also increases the risk of falls!

As you get older, your walking speed may slow down. Through previous research and science popularization, people have learned that muscle loss and lack of strength are one of the important reasons for the slowing down of the elderly' pace.

A study by the Federal University of San Carlos in Brazil, in collaboration with University College London in the United Kingdom, found that another important reason for slowing the pace of the elderly is excessive abdominal fat.

Too much abdominal fat will not only work together with muscle loss, causing the elderly to reduce their pace; too much abdominal fat will also cause muscle loss and increase the risk of falls.

Abdominal obesity + muscle weakness, severe decrease in pace

The researchers conducted 8-year health monitoring on more than 2,200 people over the age of 60 and divided them into 4 categories:

1. There is no excessive abdominal fat and muscle weakness

2, only too much abdominal fat

3. Only muscle weakness

4. It has both excessive abdominal fat and muscle weakness

At the beginning of the study, all older adults did not have a decreased pace or mobility problem; over 8 years, the decline in pace was most pronounced in the elderly with excessive abdominal fat and indigestion.

The study's first author, Roberta de Oliveira Maximo, a researcher at the Federal University of San Carlos, said:

"The normal pace of a person is 0.8 m/s, which is 2.88 km/h. The elderly with excessive abdominal fat and muscle weakness slowed down their pace by 0.15 m/s in 8 years. If they continue likely, they will not be able to cross the road for the time allowed by the traffic lights. ”

Thiago da Silva Alexander, a professor at the Centre for Biological and Health Sciences at the Federal University of San Carlos, said: "Our comparative analysis shows that the decrease in pace occurs mainly when there is too much abdominal fat and muscle weakness. In the elderly who only have too much abdominal fat or only muscle weakness, the decrease in pace is not obvious.

Abdominal obesity depletes muscle mass

Alexander said that with age, it is normal to have a decrease in subcutaneous fat and an increase in abdominal fat. In general, the accumulation of abdominal fat is more common in men, and after menopause, fat gradually accumulates in the abdomen in women. Excessive accumulation of abdominal fat activates a strong inflammatory response that depletes muscle mass, reduces muscle strength, and increases the risk of falls and movement impairments.

According to the relevant guidelines, a male waist circumference of more than 102 cm and a female waist circumference of more than 88 cm can be defined as abdominal obesity. A grip of less than 26 kg for men and less than 16 kg for women can be defined as sarcopenia.

Abdominal obesity and muscle weakness in the elderly population can be corrected through exercise training and diet. (Compiled by Chu Chao)
