This month, the World Obesity Federation released the 2023 edition of the World Obesity Atlas. According to the Map, 51% of the world's population, or more than 4 billion people, will be overweight or obese over the next 12 years.

The Map defines "overweight" as BMI ≥25kg/m², and "obese" as BMI ≥30kg/m². According to the report, more than 2.6 billion people were overweight or obese in 2020, excluding children under 5, and this number could rise to 4 billion by 2035.

The global "overweight/obesity rate" will increase from 38% in 2020 to 51% in 2035. Among them, the prevalence of "obesity" is expected to increase from 14% to 24%, and the number of people will reach 2 billion.

Changes in global "overweight/obesity rates"

"Map" predicts that between 2020~2035, the obesity rate of boys (5~19 years old) worldwide will increase from 10% to 20%; The obesity rate for girls will rise from 8% to 18%. The obesity rate among adult men (over 20 years of age) will increase from 14% in 2020 to 23% in 2035; The obesity rate among adult women will increase from 18% to 27%.

At the same time, the report shows data projections related to China.

The Map shows that by 2035, the obesity rate in China will exceed 50% for boys and nearly 40% for girls; The obesity rate in Chinese adult men will be close to 20%, and the obesity rate in adult women will be more than 15%.

Changes in obesity rates among different populations in China

Between 2020~2035, the annual growth rate of obesity in Chinese adults will reach 5.4%, and the annual growth rate of adolescent obesity will be 6.6%, and the map defines the two growth rates as "very high".

The Map predicts that by 2035, China will incur 3.1% of GDP in costs related to overweight/obesity management.
