At this time, the United States had already developed the atomic bomb, and under the action of the two atomic bombs, the two Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were razed to the ground, so Japan could only choose to surrender. So what would happen to Japan if the United States hadn't dropped the atomic bomb?
Detonate Mt. Fuji
According to popular accounts, the Soviet Union had a top-secret plan to make Japan disappear completely, that is, to detonate Mt. Fuji. If Japan had not surrendered, the Soviet Union would have sent a large number of PE-8 bombers to drop a large number of aerial bombs on Mt. Fuji, stimulating the magma in Mt. Fuji and thus detonating Mt. Fuji. After the detonation of Mt. Fuji, Japan, as a country located between the Pacific Plate and the Eurasian Plate, will sink in the violent geological activity generated after the eruption of Mt. Fuji.
In theory, such a plan was feasible, but during World War II, no country had the capacity to implement it. Because on top of the magma inside Mt. Fuji, there is a very thick layer of rock crust, and it takes hundreds of thousands of tons of bombs to explode this layer of rock crust. The two atomic bombs dropped by the United States on Japan combined were less than 40,000 tons, and to blow up this layer of rock crust, at least modern hydrogen bombs would be needed.
The Soviet Union during World War II was not a hydrogen bomb, not even an atomic bomb. The first detonation of a hydrogen bomb in human history was in 1952, when the United States detonated a three-story high and tens of tons of thermonuclear device. It took several years for humans to have hydrogen bombs that could be stuffed into transport aircraft.
For the Soviet Union to explode the rock crust of Mount Fuji with ordinary bombs in World War II, the amount of bombs required far exceeded the Soviet Union's production capacity. In World War II, it was better to detonate Mt. Fuji with bombs than to dig up Mt. Fuji with an excavator. Therefore, this plan is completely from the urban legend of the stall literature and added oil and vinegar by posterity. Even if the Soviet Union had proposed this plan, it would not have been able to pass it. However, even if the Soviets did not have plans to detonate Mt. Fuji, Japan would suffer heavy casualties under the Allied attack.
Siege of Japan
The Allies had two plans to deal with Japan, the first of which was to impose a prolonged blockade on Japan. At that time, Japan was besieged by allied regiments, and no supplies could be sent to the Japanese mainland. After the industrialization of Japan, the domestic arable land was greatly reduced. Therefore, after a long siege by the United States, there will be a large-scale famine in Japan, and some experts estimate that as long as Japan is besieged for more than a year, Japan will starve to death between 30 million and 70 million people.
Fall into action
However, due to political necessity, all countries were eager to attack Japan, so the first plan was not adopted at that time. Instead, the second plan was operations. The plan consisted of two parts, Operation Olympus, which was scheduled to begin on November 1, 1945, and Operation Crown, which began on May 1, 1946.
Operation Olympus occupied one-third of the southern part of the island of Kyushu as an airfield and supply base. During this period, the Allies landed in large numbers and launched a general offensive the following year called Operation Crown. If the plan were implemented, it would be the largest landing in human history, and the number of Japanese casualties would be at least tens of millions.
