2021 Cyber attacks up 50% yoy, Log4j vulnerability 'thanks'

IT House January 12 news, network security company Check Point Research recently released its 2021 security report, 2021 weekly total attacks on corporate networks increased by 50%.

Less than a month after one of the world's worst vulnerabilities on the internet (millions of attacks every hour trying to exploit Log4J vulnerabilities), 2021 is a record year in terms of cybersecurity, the report said.

From mid-2020 to the end of 2021, the number of cyberattacks is on the rise. This trend reached an all-time high at the end of the year, peaking at 925 weekly cyberattacks per organization worldwide. Overall, the researchers found a 50% increase in weekly attacks on corporate networks in 2021 compared to 2020.

In addition, education/research was the industry that suffered the most attacks in 2021, with an average of 1,605 attacks per week per organization, a 75% increase over 2020. It was followed by the government/military with 1,136 attacks per week (a 47 percent increase), and the communications industry with 1,079 attacks per week per organization (a 51 percent increase).

Geographically, Africa experienced the most attacks in 2021, with an average of 1,582 attacks per week per organization, a 13% increase over 2020.

In Asia Pacific, each organization experienced an average of 1,353 attacks per week (a 25% increase);

Latin America, 1,118 attacks per week (38% increase);

In Europe, 670 attacks per week (68% increase) occurred;

In North America, each organization experienced an average of 503 attacks per week (a 61 percent increase).

Omer Dembinsky, data research manager at Check Point Software, said, "The number of cyberattacks peaked at the end of the year, mainly because of the Exploitation of the Log4j vulnerability. New infiltration techniques and circumvention methods make it easier for hackers to execute malicious intent. ”
