The Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology was renamed and expanded

According to the Guangdong Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism, the former "Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology" was renamed "Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology", and the Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism was a public welfare institution at the department level, and the number of 50 public welfare institutions was expanded from the original financial subsidy category I to 91; the main functions were expanded from the original "undertaking the investigation, protection, excavation, research and publicity of cultural relics" to "undertaking the tasks of land and underwater archaeological survey, exploration, protection, excavation and research in the province; undertaking the protection of ancient tombs of ancient sites, Ancient building survey and design, etc., undertake cultural heritage survey, cultural heritage utilization and public archaeology and other work."

According to industry analysis, after this adjustment, the Guangdong Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology will stand at a new and higher starting point and make new and greater contributions to promoting the high-quality development of Guangdong archaeology in the new era and promoting the construction of a culturally strong province.

Wang Yiyang, Secretary of the Party Group and Director of the Department of Culture and Tourism of Guangdong Province, introduced in his speech at the 2021 Provincial Culture and Tourism Work Conference: In 2019 and 2020, the two projects of Guangdong Yingde Qingtang Site and "Nanhai I" were successively selected as "Top Ten New Archaeological Discoveries in China", and the underwater archaeological achievements ranked first in the country. The total number of cultural relics from the "Nanhai I" reached 180,000 pieces/sets.

In the "14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Culture and Tourism in Guangdong Province", it is clear that it is necessary to strengthen and optimize underwater archaeology, continue to promote the excavation, protection and follow-up research of the "South China Sea I", strengthen the investigation and research of the remains of the "Three Seas" (Sea Silk Road, Coastal Defense, and Islands) and underwater cultural heritage, and promote the construction of the Underwater Cultural Heritage Conservation Center in Guangdong Province.
