Your ministry has received the request for approval and publication of the No. 1 and No. 2 shipwreck underwater cultural relics protection areas on the northwest slope of the South China Sea. The reply is as follows:
The State Council has approved the list of underwater cultural relics protected areas for shipwrecks No. 1 and No. 2 on the northwest slope of the South China Sea submitted by the State Council, and it is hereby announced.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage should adhere to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, implement the work requirements of the Party Central Committee on adhering to protection first, strengthening management, excavating value, effective utilization, and bringing cultural relics to life, and conscientiously do a good job in the protection and management of underwater cultural relics protection areas in accordance with the "Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of Cultural Relics", "Regulations of the People's Republic of China on the Protection and Management of Underwater Cultural Relics" and other laws and regulations. In conjunction with relevant localities and departments, scientifically formulate protection plans, and clarify specific protection measures. Give full play to the role of underwater cultural relics, and strengthen the research, interpretation, display and utilization of the value of underwater cultural relics. Organize and carry out law enforcement work on the protection of underwater cultural relics, strengthen law enforcement cooperation, and ensure the safety of underwater cultural relics.

On May 21, 2023, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Hainan Provincial People's Government and other units announced the major progress made in the deep-sea archaeological work in the mainland.
