Recently, the global CMOS sensor giant Sony also officially built a car, and exhibited two concept cars at CES 2022, a pure electric car Vision-S, and a pure electric SUV Vision-S 02.

Sony said that the reason why it wants to build a car is to bring consumers a safe, reliable and comfortable travel experience through its own CMOS sensors, solid-state lidar, sensor fusion and other imaging and perception technologies.

On the car on display this time, 40 sensors were used, and most of these sensors were developed by Sony, especially lidar, which adopted a new technology.

Specifically, one of the 40 sensors is particularly noteworthy, and that is the SPAD (single photon avalanche diode) lidar sensor (laser receiving chip) called IMX459.

Sony uses its own double-layer image sensor stacking technology, based on APAD technology, other lidar companies can use the IMX459 to create thousands of ultra-high-definition radars with equivalent lines, so that cars can see farther and clearer.

Not only that, but the double-layer stacked sensor has a new technical way to calculate the distance faster, which can make the car's reaction time faster, automatic navigation more accurate, and lower latency, which is the key.
