Recall an interesting experience of peaceful coexistence with wild boars in Japan

In recent years, I have seen many news about people encountering wild boars, for example, the student dormitory area of Nanjing University's Xianlin Campus has been photographed with wild boars. In addition, the Internet has also seen the footage of wild boars sneaking out of the west wall of the Nanda Xianlin Campus and crossing the road and crossing the front of the car.

And this autumn, just when the autumn leaves of Qixia Mountain are flourishing and tourists are weaving, there are wild boars swinging wildly and almost at no distance to forage around tourists, if there is no one next to the wild boar, the people around them may not have had time to react, looking very calm, and did not show panic.

There were no casualties in these incidents between people and wild boars, but there were indeed many tragic cases of wild boar injuries, for example, on January 31, 2018, a wild boar of more than 200 kilograms broke into Peiba Village in Ziyang County to bite and kill one person, biting and injuring one person, and the monitoring also recorded the whole process, and the scene was very frightening.

There are many similar incidents of wild boar injuries and deaths, so how much threat does wild boar pose to people? Wild boars and wild boars are not exactly the same, some are fierce, some are relatively mild, and even not aggressive to people.

In this regard, I can't help but recall many times in Japan when I had close contact with wild boars.

The main urban area of the city where I live is surrounded by mountains and seas, the terrain is narrow and long, in order to increase the living space, the residents' housing continues to extend to the mountainside and even the top of the mountain, my school and the dormitories for international students are on the same slope of the mountain, the regular path to the school should be to take the bus down the mountain and then take the tram (similar to the current light rail in China), and finally climb a mountain road, but in order to save the bus fare, I chose to hike laterally along the hillside between the residence and the school.

The way to and from the school is full of two- and three-story wooden buildings with Japanese characteristics, called "one-family building", and there will be a small number of multi-storey apartment buildings dotted among them, I walk through them, sometimes passing the path between the houses, sometimes walking close to the door of the residents, sometimes going down to the dry mountain stream and riverbed, and sometimes climbing to the top of the slope, a bit like entering a maze, and after many times back and forth I remember every twist and turn and change of lane.

One by one

When I first went, I heard that there were often wild boars in that area, and sure enough, on my way back to the dormitory at night, I encountered wild boars that came out in the dark to feed. This was originally the home of wild boars, it was humans who eroded step by step into their territory, originally they were masters, but in the face of uninvited guests like us, they reacted very gently, encountering pedestrians, sometimes looking down to forage, turning a blind eye, sometimes quietly avoiding, and even a little panicked to flee, and did not show the intention and behavior of attacking people.

Wild boars haunted by urban neighborhoods in Japan

I was frightened from the beginning, and slowly my courage became bigger. Facing them on the side of the roadside house, although I was still a little cautious, at least I could pretend to be calm, so that fear was not colorful, and after many experiences, I gradually calmed down.

Streets on hillsides in Japanese cities

One of the most interesting experiences is still fresh in my mind.

I remember that it was a hazy night, and at ten o'clock, I finished a tired and tedious day of experimental work, and walked as usual on the way back to my residence, which was no longer strange, to a small river that I had to pass back and forth every day. There is a pedestrian bridge on the river that is less than two meters wide and can only be crossed by two people, and when I reach the middle of the bridge, I vaguely see a figure standing motionless at the head of the bridge in front of me. Looking closer, I saw a dark-skinned, South Asian-looking international student, holding a thin and weak branch in his hand, gently waving at the head of the bridge, while making a "hissing" sound so light that only he could hear it.

I fixed my eyes on it, and not far in front of him, there were two wild boars straddling the middle of the tight path, completely blocking his way.

The wild boar was burying its head and concentrating on foraging, turning a blind eye to him, deaf and deaf, although this benevolent brother waved the branch and made a booing sound, but he seemed to be afraid that the movement would make a loud noise and annoy the wild boar, but in this way, the wild boar was completely unaware, he was completely embarrassed and overwhelmed, and it seemed that he could only stalemate with the wild boar in this way.

With the confidence laid by the many encounters with wild boars and the fact that they were safe, I suddenly became proud and took a steady and calm step, first passing by him without a word, and then walking towards the wild boar in the middle of the road.

In fact, I was also playing drums in my heart at that time, what if these two wild boars did not abide by the rules, did not talk about "martial virtue", and accidentally attacked me? Moreover, wild boars had never been so close to the scene before, and there was not enough certainty of how they would react. I had no choice but to walk with courage and nothing to do with the boar.

Fortunately, the wild boars were as "humble" as ever, and as I approached, they seemed to finally perceive it, and immediately turned around and disappeared into the bushes on the side of the road.

However, time has changed, and it is said that there are now some places in Japan where wild boars are flooded, rampaging the streets and harassing houses, and I am afraid that people are no longer as peaceful and peaceful as they were in the past.

For wild boars, my general view is that the occasional appearance in the place where people are active should be a manifestation of ecological improvement, but it should also vary from time to time and place, and for wild boars that are small in number and gentle with people, they should be properly actively avoided and protected, but once they hurt people, they should be treated decisively, and they should not be confined to the identity of their wild animals, in any case, human life is the first. As for the phenomenon of wild boar flooding that has appeared in Shaanxi and other places, they have caused great harm to agricultural production and also posed a great threat to the property and life safety of farmers. In short, humans should be intelligent enough to effectively control wild animals such as wild boars to maintain a moderate and moderate state of survival.
