However, in 1949, with the defeat of the Kuomintang on the battlefield, Chiang Kai-shek realized that his goal might be impossible to achieve, and after he determined that Taiwan was his last line, he specially took his son Chiang Ching-kuo to Fenghua Xikou to visit the grave.
The father and son of the Jiang family lived for some time next to the grave of Mother Jiang, and the two did not bring attendants, walking in the mountains, looking solemn at each other. Eventually, on leaving, someone asked them when they would come back again, and they didn't answer.

When he was seriously ill, he knew that he would not be able to return to Fenghua, so he instructed his son Chiang Ching-kuo to stop his coffin at Cuoci Lake. When asked why, he said very generously: The scenery there is very similar to That of Fenghua.
