On January 5, a research report released by display industry analyst Ross Young showed that Apple will launch AR/VR devices supporting virtual reality technology in 2022 to cope with the meta-universe boom set off in the industry. At present, meta, Google, Qualcomm, Microsoft and other technology giants have shown great interest in the metaverse, and Apple should also prepare early.
The report shows that Apple's VR headset will be equipped with three displays, including two micro OLED screens and an AMOLED screen, of which the micro OLED screen will be provided by Sony, and the AMOLED screen should continue to be supplied by Samsung.
At present, it is not clear the specific functions of these three screens, under normal circumstances, the micro OLED display will be the main screen of the VR headset, it will have a higher resolution, bringing users a clearer and more delicate display picture. Due to the low pixel density of AMOLED screens, the application of VR headsets may appear grainy, affecting the user's perception.
Ross Young speculates that Apple may use AMOLED panels for low-resolution peripheral vision, achieving a recessed display system that may improve the immersion of VR headsets. It is understood that Varjo has also used a high-resolution Micro OLED display and a lower-resolution MiniLED LCD screen in VR headset devices before, and the two achieve a sense of depression after optical combination.
Sony recently announced a 4K display of 4000 pixels per inch, dedicated to VR avatar devices, which may be specially developed for Apple. If Apple's VR headset can use such a high-end screen, it can present richer content in a smaller display area, reducing the size and weight of the VR headset.
The specific division of labor of the three screens may have to wait until the product is released. According to Apple's consistent style, the product must be polished very mature before it will be listed, I believe it can bring a more surprising experience. This product not only uses a high-end display, but also is expected to be equipped with a powerful self-developed chip, and its price is certainly not cheap. Ross Young believes that the price of Apple's VR headset is around $3,000, about 20,000 yuan, which is really not affordable for ordinary consumers.
This year, Meta, Sony will launch VR headset devices, Microsoft also joined forces with Qualcomm to develop processor products dedicated to the VR field, and the concept of metaversity may explode this year. At present, domestic mobile phone manufacturers do not seem to have taken action in this regard, perhaps everyone is holding back a big move, it is worth looking forward to.
