OLED can not be popularized What are you worried about besides being expensive?

OLED panel technology is a hot topic in recent years, Apple mobile phones have used OLED screens since the iPhone X, and large-screen TVs have also used OLED screens in early years. Since OLED is the trend of the times, why are desktop monitors with higher usage among office workers delayed? There are three problems that cannot be ignored, and they are also the key to the user's constant struggle.

01 High price

OLED technology has just started, research and development costs are higher, just like the beginning of the mobile phone is still called Big Brother when a 1W more, advanced electronic products, before the technology is not popularized, the price is relatively high.

However, at present, the price of OLED, whether it is a monitor or a TV, has dropped greatly compared with when it was first launched, at least to the point where users can accept it.

expensive

But no matter how mature the technology is, the OLED display device itself is relatively higher in cost than lcd. The luminous efficiency, luminous life and luminous chromaticity of the luminescent material will have a direct impact on the device properties of OLEDs, and the core of the luminescent layer composed of the luminescent material is also the core of the entire OLED device, and the material cost is relatively expensive.

And most of the OLED products on the market in addition to small-screen mobile phones, is the giant screen TV, the conventional size of olED monitor has been in a vacant state, or in the price remains high, can not reach the standard of civil popularity. The Philips 27E1N8900 OLED display is also the first 27-inch OLED product to push the price below 10,000 yuan.

02OLED hurts the eyes?

The problem of eye injury is that OLED mobile phones have been unavoidable, and many users will feel that their eyes are sore for a long time when using OLED screen mobile phones, and even the phenomenon of ghosting appears.

So will OLED monitors have the same problem?

You know, the main reason why OLED mobile phones cause eye discomfort is strobe, and mobile phones will automatically adjust according to different ambient lights during use.

PWM dimming

At present, there are two dimming methods for OLED mobile phones, PWM and DC dimming. The traditional PWM method: control the periodic flickering of each organic diode, simply put, it is to control the brightness and darkness through the continuous flashing of the screen, so that the longer the screen is extinguished, we will think that the brightness of the screen has dimmed, the screen has been lit for a long time, and we think that the screen has become brighter.

PWM dimming principle

If the speed of light and off alternation is slower, the greater the damage to our eyes, which is why some people say that looking at OLED screens at night will cause eye pain.

DC dimming

The principle of DC dimming is to change the brightness of the screen by changing the power of the circuit, so changing the current or voltage can adjust the brightness of the screen.

PWM dimming and DC dimming

The OLED screen has its own light-emitting diode, the pixels are emitted separately, so if the OLED uses DC dimming, there will generally be a problem of color inaccuracy when the brightness is low. However, DC dimming does not have stroboscopic, and when used in low-brightness environments, the eyes do not produce a sour feeling.

OLED monitors do not splash low blue light

However, OLED displays do not involve PWM dimming or DC dimming, there is no harm caused by strobes, and this 27E1N8900 OLED display is actually more eye-pleasing than LCD in terms of luminous mode.

Traditional LED display to display white light, the need for blue LED chip + light yellow phosphor two combination, first LED chip emits blue light, blue light through the light yellow phosphor to produce yellow light, and then by blue light and yellow light mixed to form white light.

Therefore, in order to make the white light whiter, the picture color more vivid, and the color contrast higher, it is necessary to increase the dose of blue light, and the harm of blue light needless to say that everyone understands.

Contrast of OLED versus LCD blue light intensity

The OLED panel is composed of a separate light emitting diode, and the principle of self-illumination itself makes the harmful short-wave blue light component smaller and the eye damage is less.

03 Burn-in screen

Burn-in screen is the biggest problem of OLED, popularly speaking, it means that after the screen displays a still image for a long time, it will leave the afterimage of the image, and this afterimage is permanent and cannot be eliminated.

And for desktop monitors, their use time is much higher than mobile phones and TVs, and usually browsing the web or working documents have a large amount of fixed display content, which is also the biggest factor hindering the development of OLED displays.

OLED TV burns the screen

In fact, even the earliest "big ass" CRT monitors also have the problem of burning screens, but the principle is not different. CRT display each pixel using electron beam bombardment phosphor luminescence to achieve, if in the same way for a long time fixed display icon, phosphor without rest, long-term glow will cause the phosphor to produce afterimage in the image.

CRT display imaging

OLED has the same problem, although the internal replacement of self-light emitting diodes, but if it is only a simple aging, it should only change the brightness, without residual shadow.

Afterimage occurs because the lit compound degrades over time and ends up on the screen in a residual manner, with the shortest decay period of the material, especially in blue pixels.

RGB arrangement

Therefore, in order to minimize the decay cycle, panel manufacturers have come up with a variety of arrangements. The most common and mature is the RGB arrangement, that is, the uniform arrangement of the three primary colors of red, green and blue, and the derived RGBW arrangement that adds white, the Pentile arrangement that doubles the volume of red and blue; the diamond-shaped diamond arrangement; the variant of the diamond arrangement, the domestic Delta arrangement, and so on.

04 Is there really no effective way?

However, it is inseparable from the fact that it extends the life cycle of blue pixels and maximizes the user's experience. In addition, in addition to changing the arrangement of pixels, manufacturers will also protect the screen by pixel offset, automatically reducing the brightness under standby, and so on.

But any measures must ultimately be tested in practice, and for the most inflamed screen with the most OLED problems, we also chose the Philips 27E1N8900 OLED display for extreme testing.

What color is most likely to burn the screen? How long does it take to burn the screen when it is lit? Does the degree of burn-in affect the use? How much difference can the color after burning the screen be? These questions you care about will be revealed in the extreme test.
