"When I was 8 years old, he (Zhang Zuolin) desperately got me a five-pin official, and he was a good father."
In his later years, when he was oral history, Zhang Xueliang once said such a sentence to the author Tang Degang. It can also be heard from this sentence that Zhang Xueliang has a high evaluation of his father Zhang Zuolin.
In his later years, when he recalled his father, he often hung up on his lips: "I am smart, my father is smarter than me, he is better than me." After arriving in the United States, every time I met people who came to see him, one of the most common words he said was: "I want to go back to the northeast, I think of my father!" ”
Undoubtedly, Zhang Xueliang's feelings for his father are very deep. But few people know that the father-son relationship between Zhang Xueliang and his father Zhang Zuolin in his youth is a completely different scene. When he was a teenager, Zhang Xueliang even thought about killing his father.
Behind the bad feelings of their father and son, it is related to Zhang Xueliang's mother, Zhao Chungui.

Zhao Chungui and Zhang Xueliang's siblings (Zhang Xueliang on the left)
Zhao Chungui was Zhang Zuolin's original wife, and when she married Zhang Zuolin, she was 21 years old.
Zhao Chungui was a lady of the landlord's family, and Zhang Zuolin at that time was only a sentinel of the Qing Army, so in this marriage, Zhao Chungui belonged to the next marriage. Therefore, this marriage was opposed by Zhao's mother at the beginning, but Zhao Zhanyuan, Zhao's father, did not think so, and he concluded that Zhang Zuolin was a strange person and there would be great creation in the future.
It is a pity that Zhao Zhanyuan did not think of a problem at that time: there have always been men with great creations, and after they are rich and noble, they often abandon their wives. And his daughter will also suffer this fate.
Initially, when Zhang Zuolin had not yet flown huang Tengda, the husband and wife relationship between Zhang Zuolin and Zhao Chungui was still reasonable. After the death of the first son they gave birth to, they gave birth to daughters Zhang Shoufang, sons Zhang Xueliang and Zhang Xueming.
Zhang Zuolin, who has not yet soared
Zhao Chungui is a very strong woman, so she has always taken care of the big and small affairs in the family, and she will even find ways to act as her husband's inner helper. Zhang Zuolin likes to scold people, his mantra is a, and because he likes to scold people, his interpersonal relationship is not good. Zhao Chungui saw that she was naturally anxious, and later, she tried to use the way of "and thin mud" to circumvent interpersonal relationships for her husband.
On weekdays, as long as Zhang Zuolin's brothers are in need, she always tries to help as much as possible, and if they are injured, she will take good care of them like Zhang Zuolin.
It can be said that behind Zhang Zuolin's step-by-step climbing up, there is the credit of Zhao Chungui.
When Zhang Xueliang was first born, it was the time when his parents had the best feelings. Because Zhang Xueliang once had an older brother who died prematurely, after he was born, Zhang Zuolin was particularly attentive. On the day Zhang Xueliang was born, Zhang Zuolin just fought a small victory, so he named his son "Double Happiness". He vaguely felt that this son had some inexplicable origin with him.
When Zhang Xueliang was three years old, the fortune teller gave him a trigram, and the result of the fortune teller was: Zhang Xueliang's life was hard, his father and mother, and the way to resolve it was to enter the temple as a "monk who jumped the wall" and return the "double happiness" to the Buddha. Then, the first cry he heard after leaving the temple was counted as his new nickname.
Zhang Zuolin believed in the elephant the most, so he believed in the words of the fortune teller.
A year later, Zhang Zuolin did take Zhang Xueliang to the temple, but he did not really let his son become a monk. He just took his son to the temple to take a formal walk.
After arriving at the temple, Zhang Zuolin erected a long stool at the entrance of the temple, and he asked his son to jump over the stool. At that time, although Zhang Xueliang was less than four years old, he was a very obedient master. After Zhang Zuolin gave an order, Zhang Xueliang threw up his legs and climbed over the stool with a rolling belt. After Zhang Zuolin shouted "run" again, Zhang Xueliang ran to the temple gate with his legs. At this time, a woman was shouting: "Little Sixth Son, go home and eat!" From this point on, Zhang Zuolin began to call Zhang Xueliang "Little Sixth Son".
Zhang Zuolin took her son to do these things, and Zhao Chungui did not object, she always followed her husband. On weekdays, he was too busy to take care of the family, and she didn't mind, only to say to the children who asked her for their father: "Your father is busy, what about us in his heart?" When you're done, you'll be back. ”
Also because Zhang Zuolin was always very busy, zhang Xueliang in his childhood hardly had much impression of his father. He later recalled: "When I was a child, my dad would come back in the dark and the chickens would go out. ”
Zhao Chungui took a group photo with Zhang Xueliang's siblings and friends
Zhang Xueliang's initial impression was that his mother was always young and energetic, and her temperament was also very docile, he accidentally committed an accident, and his mother would not really be angry.
But later, Zhang Xueliang's impression of her mother began to change, and she began to like to nag, and there seemed to be an unspeakable resentment. For their siblings, she also began to appear less impatient.
When this change began, Zhang Xueliang is not clear. Later, his mother even began to become moody, sometimes grabbing him and beating him for a small matter.
Zhang Xueliang realized: The change of mother is related to the father's attitude towards them.
His father would send money to the house every two or three months, and as for how much money he sent, Zhang Xueliang did not know. He knew it through his mother's words, and he had heard her say:
"Your father is a bandit in Jilin, across the mountains and rivers, it is not easy to come back, let's not expect him too much, he can come back every two months with money, that is to say, he still has our wives in his heart, and he has not forgotten us."
When Zhang Xueliang heard his mother say this, he always felt that something was wrong, but he couldn't say it. It wasn't until he became an adult that he knew that his mother's words, although they were addressed to their brothers and sisters, were actually said to themselves, and she was comforting herself.
The truth of the matter is: Zhang Zuolin at that time already had other young women outside. And these, Zhao Chungui also slowly learned. In particular, Zhang Zuolin's troops were stationed in Fengtian, and Zhao Chungui knew more about his affairs.
Zhao Chungui is a woman with a strong personality, and she is very strong and naturally has her own views on her husband's other marriage. On the one hand, she felt that it was a tradition for men to have three wives and four concubines, but on the other hand, she was very unwilling. After all, he was able to get to where he is today, and she has her credit behind it. Sometimes, Zhao Chungui even felt that her husband's successive marriages were ungrateful.
After thinking like this, Zhao Chungui was naturally full of complaints about her husband.
After Zhang Zuolin arrived in Fengtian, he had thought of taking Zhao Chungui from Xinmin to the palace, but Zhao Chungui was not happy to see his aunts and wives, so she categorically refused. Zhao Chungui's refusal made Zhang Zuolin angry, and he even felt that his wife did not know what to do.
Zhang Zuolin and Zhao Chungui
In the relationship, women reject men, often do not really want to separate, most of the time, they just want to exchange this way for some poor love, Zhao Chungui refused to stay in Zhang Zuolin's Fengtian mansion, is also based on this. But Zhang Zuolin couldn't understand it, so he was angry at his wife's indifference and refusal.
In this way, the two couples fell into the Cold War.
Parents are discordant, and it is always the children who suffer. Zhang Xueliang found that her mother often made angry with their sisters and brothers, and sometimes, she would secretly cry alone. Once, he also bumped into his mother talking to his grandmother, and he heard her say to her grandmother: "You said that he was in Fengtian, and Fengtian and Xinmin were so close, he would not come. After saying that, she began to cry bitterly.
Zhang Xueliang couldn't see his mother crying the most, and every time his mother cried, he felt uncomfortable. This time, he finally knew from his mother's words the reason why she was getting worse and worse lately.
In the eyes of Zhang Xueliang, who is only eight or nine years old, his mother is with himself, so he even regards his father as an enemy when his parents have bad feelings. Zhang Xueliang, who had already read and understood etiquette, already understood personnel affairs, and he expected that his father would abandon them.
That day, after listening to their chat, he wiped his tears and squatted on the ground and poked the ground with a wooden stick. It wasn't until a large hole in the ground was poked that he threw the stick.
Zhang Zuolin is indeed surrounded by his aunt, but he did not think of not wanting the original match and his children, he did not give monthly money, more or less let Zhao Chungui taste the meaning of "powerful". He always felt that if it was a woman, it could be done with cruel tricks.
After Xinmin's family cut off the monthly money, life became more and more tight. Zhao Chungui did not personally go to find Zhang Zuolin, did not want to see her husband, and sent her son Zhang Xueliang to ask his father for money.
Zhang Xueliang had never been to Fengtian before, and he didn't know what place it was. On that day, he was riding a dung truck into Fengtian, before leaving, he did not change his clothes, he thought too simply: see your father, still pay attention to these?
After arriving at Zhang Zuolin's residence, Zhang Xueliang knew that he was smelly and tattered, and he couldn't get in at all. It turned out that the guards at the door had taken him as Hanako.
Zhang Xueliang's personality is very similar to his mother, and his self-esteem is very strong. After the doorman mocked him for being called Hanako and picked up his dog-skin hat with a bayonet and threw it out, he felt greatly insulted. And this insult was obviously given by the father.
On the way back to Xinmin, Zhang Xueliang cried all the way back. While crying, he scolded Zhang Zuolin dozens of times. It was only at this time that Zhang Xueliang knew that he had such a deep complaint against his father. In fact, most of his resentment towards his father comes from the influence of his mother's daily mood.
After Zhang Xueliang asked for money this time, Zhao Chungui took her 5-year-old young son Zhang Xueming to Fengtian personally, and when she returned, she fell ill.
Her mother has always been the family's dependence, and after she fell ill, Zhang Xueliang and her sister Zhang Shoufang were anxious. Zhao Chungui's illness was obviously heart disease, and she went to Fengtian after a trip and was completely dead to her man.
Zhang Zuolin's six daughters (zhang shoufang on the right)
It turned out that when she arrived in Fengtian that day with her scientific name climbing ice and snow, it was already dark, and as soon as she entered the city after a day of walking, she saw these things hanging at the city gate. When she looked closer, there were two bloody human heads.
Where did Zhao Chungui see such a frightening scene, she screamed in fright. After finding Zhang Zuolin's residence with a frightened scientific name, she did not see her husband, and he only ordered someone to settle her in an inn.
That night, Zhao Chungui had not fallen asleep, and when it was nearly three o'clock, Zhang Zuolin arrived at the inn. After arriving at the inn, Zhang Zuolin shouted that he was sleepy, and then he fell on the kang. When Zhao Chungui saw it, he turned around and poured hot water. In the past, when they lived together, he used to sleep like this, and every time, she would bring hot water to wash his feet.
But when she came back from pouring hot water and was preparing to take off her shoes for Zhang Zuolin, Zhang Xueming, who was sleeping next to her, suddenly kicked the quilt and cried. Zhao Chungui saw that he was busy covering Zhang Xueming's mouth, but it was too late: Zhang Zuolin, who was awakened, jumped up and directly gave Zhang Xueming a slap. After beating his son, he scolded fiercely: "Cry, cry, cry, curse me for dying early." ”
Zhang Xueming had just been frightened, and now he was slapped again, and immediately he was frightened, and his crying suddenly stopped and he directly rolled his eyes. Zhao Chungui saw that her son was frightened like this, and immediately became angry, she grabbed Zhang Xueming's pillow and hit Zhang Zuolin, Zhang Zuolin immediately roared angrily, lifted his feet and kicked Zhao Chungui to the ground.
Before dawn, Zhao Chungui took his son with red eyes and embarked on the road back to Xinmin. This way, under the rapid fire attack, it was ice and snow, and her illness was expected.
Zhang Xueliang did not know what happened to his mother in Fengtian, but he still guessed that his mother's illness was related to his father.
Seeing that her mother's illness was getting worse and worse every day, Zhang Shoufang cried and said to her brother Zhang Xueliang: "Mom is no longer able to do it, you hurry into the city to find it." After the first failed lesson of finding his father, this time, Zhang Xueliang learned to be obedient: before leaving home, he specially changed the best clothes, and before leaving, he also brought a silver dollar to prepare for the key time.
This time, Zhang Xueliang entered the door with almost no trouble. At that time, Zhang Zuolin was throwing a tantrum in the room, and after Zhang Xueliang timidly called out "Dad", Zhang Zuolin suddenly turned back to him and yelled: "Roll, roll for me." ”
At this time, Zhang Xueliang was only 11 years old after all, although his size had jumped very high, but his mind was not fully mature, giving Zhang Zuolin such a roar, he almost cried out. But after all, he came with a task, so he finally plucked up the courage to speak, and he said loudly: "Dad, Mom is sick, too sick to do it, you go to see her!" ”
Zhang Zuolin frowned after listening to it, "Can you please stop bothering me and go home!" ”
On that day, Zhang Xueliang left Zhang Zuolin's house in tears, and the moment he stepped out of the door, his heart was full of hatred. In his own later words: If he had a gun in his hand at the time, he would not have hesitated to give this ruthless father a shot.
Chang
Zhang Zuolin was not ruthless and unjust, if he knew that Zhao Chungui was really critically ill at this time, he would definitely leave everything and go to Xinmin. But after all, he was still angry, and he thought that his wife was "playing tricks" with him in this way.
On that day, after Zhang Xueliang cried and cried and left, Zhang Zuolin also had some drumming in his heart, and he remembered the conflict between the two when he and his wife last met. Somehow, he felt very guilty in his heart. After the feelings in his heart changed, he actually remembered all kinds of things when Zhao Chungui was just with him.
Over the years, he has worked hard outside, no matter how big or small the officials are, Zhao Chungui has never cared, and all she cares about is Zhang Zuolin. If she hadn't paid no attention to the glory and wealth, how could she have been hiding in the cramped dwelling of the new people? After thinking like this, Zhang Zuolin's heart was even more unpleasant. After thinking about it, Zhang Zuolin decided to send the second wife, Lu Shouxuan, to investigate the situation.
When Madame Lu went to the old mansion in Xinmin Xingnuo Hutong, she was immediately frightened: she saw Zhao Chungui lying on the bed with a blank face, and she could no longer speak.
After realizing the seriousness of the situation, he ordered someone to inform Zhang Zuolin of Madame Zhao's condition, and at the same time quickly asked the doctor to grab the medicine.
But Zhao Chungui's illness is a heart disease after all, and no matter how good a doctor is, what is the use. After taking the medicine for several days in a row, Zhao Chungui's condition became worse and worse.
On April 15, 1912, Zhao Chungui, who was only 38 years old, died of depression.
Madame Lu reported Lady Zhao's death to Zhang Zuolin by urgent telegram, and after learning the bad news, Zhang Zuolin actually thought it was a misinformation. He couldn't believe that the lady who had been fighting with him some time ago would suddenly die.
When he went from Fengtian to Xinmin, Zhang Zuolin's mind was full of all kinds of kindness that his wife had for him in his early years.
When he arrived at Xinmin and heard a room full of cries, Zhang Zuolin realized: His wife really died of illness. After coming to his wife's side, looking at Zhao Chungui, who was motionless on the bed, Zhang Zuolin caressed the corpse and cried bitterly.
Zhang Shoufang, Zhang Xueliang and Zhang Xueming on the side saw the situation and cried even more fiercely. In the year of Zhao Chungui's death, Zhang Shoufang was 15 years old, Zhang Xueliang was 11 years old, and Zhang Xueming was only 5 years old.
The death of his mother made Zhang Xueliang's hatred for his father deepen another layer. At this time, Zhang Zuolin, who had understood everything, was also full of guilt for driving away his son that day. But at this time, he did not have time to deal with the contradiction between father and son, and he had to give Zhang Luo the aftermath of his wife first.
After Lady Zhao's death, Lady Lu prepared a fine coffin for her, which was made of cypress wood and bought by her with private money.
But Zhang Zuolin circled the coffin twice, patted it, and said, "This can't work, change it."
Subsequently, Zhang Zuolin managed to go to the richest local family to get a pair of fine golden silk nan wood coffins.
Zhao Chungui's funeral was held in Xinmin County, and on the same day, the fengtian governors and officials of the yamen, Zhang Zuolinbai, and the consular and commercial chargé d'affaires of Japan, Russia, the United States, Britain, and Italy, all arrived in Xinmin.
It was also at this funeral that Zhang Xueliang knew: his father is really an unusual figure. But he was not generally unrelated to him, and at the moment he had only hatred for his father.
Zhao Chungui's cemetery was chosen in Stagecoach, which is backed by green mountains and faces flowing water, and the scenery is very beautiful.
Zhang Zuolin and Zhao Chungui were buried together
At the time of burial, the person responsible for carrying the coffin was Zhang Jinghui, Zhang Zuoxiang, Tang Yulin, etc., which made everyone around stunned. Zhang Xueliang looked at the people who draped their mothers in filial piety, and slightly felt in his heart that his father finally had a "look" for his mother.
The person who cried the most fiercely at Zhao Chungui's funeral was Zhang Xueliang's grandmother, because he was afraid that his grandmother would be lost, and Zhang Xueliang had always accompanied her grandmother. That day, she was crying, and suddenly bumped into Zhang Zuolin, after Zhang Shoufang and Zhang Xueliang pulled her, she still kept scolding in her mouth: "Now you are satisfied, there is no obstruction, right, I already know that the girlfriend followed you, not a good ..."
Listening to his mother-in-law's words, Zhang Zuolin's iron face was blue, and he did not say a word, and he felt sadder than anyone. Yes, after following him, she fell a little better, even if he became a high official, she also nestled in xinmin, and did not have a good day...
After pulling his grandmother, Zhang Xueliang has been looking at his father with hatred. Zhang Zuolin felt his son's eyes full of resentment, and for the first time he felt: his son has grown up.
After burying Zhao Chungui, the heartbroken Zhang Zuolin lived in the gatehouse of the cemetery for a day and a night. The next morning, when Zhang Zuolin walked out of the concierge, Zhang Xueliang was right at the door, and his eyes were red, and he glanced at his father, who looked back at him and limped straight to his side.
After looking at Zhang Xueliang, Zhang Zuolin rubbed his legs while saying to his son: "Little Sixth Son, you remember, after I die, you will bury me here." ”
After listening to his father's words, Zhang Xueliang felt a pang of pain in his heart, and his tears also came out of his eyes. He squatted down crying, and this time he cried, but he was touched by the feelings of his father and mother. He finally understood that his father and mother had love, but they were all expressed in the wrong way.
At that moment, Zhang Xueliang let go of a lot of resentment towards his father, and he even began to pity his father, yes, he lost his mother, and his father did not lose a person who loved him the most!
After Zhao Chungui's death, Zhang Xueliang's sisters and brothers were taken back to Fengtian's home by Zhang Zuolin. At this time, Zhang Zuolin had already added younger brothers and sisters to Zhang Xueliang.
After joining the Lord, Zhang Xueliang knew that his father had actually found so many little mothers for himself and gave birth to several younger brothers and sisters. At that moment, the resentment in Zhang Xue's conscience came up again.
Zhang Zuolin's eight sons (the first from the right is Zhang Xueliang)
Zhang Xueliang's face was the most unable to hide things, and Zhang Zuolin knew what he was thinking at a glance. So, during a meal, he knocked on the side and said, "Do you have any dissatisfaction with our family?" ”
After listening to it, Zhang Xueliang stood up from the dining table and pulled the leather jacket on his body: "You see what I am wearing now, what I eat, you see what they are wearing, what they eat, you think about my mother again!" ”
Zhang Zuolin listened but was not angry, he took a bite of the meal and said: "You eat well, dress well, your mother will only be happy, you, now you have to hurry up and take a long breath, don't let me see your mother when the time comes!" ”
Zhang Xueliang heard that when his father said this last sentence, his voice was a little strange, did he think of them, and his heart was uncomfortable again. At that moment, Zhang Xue's conscience also hurt a little.
Zhang Zuolin was riveted enough to compensate Zhang Xueliang's brothers and sisters, and whatever they wanted, he was determined to give. In order to let Zhang Xueliang receive a good traditional culture education, he specially invited Mr. Yang Jingzhen from Haicheng to teach Zhang Xueliang's Analects, Mencius and History.
Later, Zhang Zuolin invited Mr. Bai Yongzhen, a famous Confucian in Shenyang, to give a lecture.
After returning to Zhang Zuolin's side for only two years, Zhang Xueliang quickly grew into an adult, and among many brothers and sisters, he seemed to be the "head of the dragons", and Zhang Zuolin's desire to cultivate his son into a "tiger of the gate" became more and more obvious.
At first, Zhang Xueliang was very resistant to everything his father had arranged for him, and he even wanted to take a path that was diametrically opposite to his father. This is the role of the rebellious spirit of his adolescence, on the other hand, it is the embodiment of his and his father's always had mustard.
Although Zhang Xueliang lived with his father after his mother's death, because of the lack of companionship of his father in his childhood, he lacked the closeness that ordinary fathers and sons should have. Because of his mother, he had another resentment towards his father, and this resentment diluted the authority that Zhang Zuolin should have as a father in front of his son.
Zhang Zuolin is also aware of these problems, he is even trying to make up for it, but growth is always only once, Zhang Zuolin finally tasted because of this lack. At the same time, Zhang Zuolin's work became busier and busier, so that it became impossible for him to try to make up for the lack of companionship.
In his later years, Zhang Xueliang wrote in a reflective article:
"When fang was eleven years old, his mother was very kind, and the first doctor was very fond of him, but he was busy with military and political affairs, and he lacked good teachers and friends."
The premature death of his mother, coupled with the lack of companionship of his father, made Zhang Xueliang more willful than his peers. But as he grew older, he began to worship his father.
Just think, what son can not worship a powerful father? As a mortal fetus in the flesh, Zhang Xueliang naturally could not either.
As the eldest son of the elder Zhang Zuolin, Zhang Xueliang enjoyed various privileges, and he even tasted the taste of calling the wind and rain. Naturally, he couldn't help but start trying to get closer to his father. But the "anti-Lao Tzu" side of his heart has not completely disappeared.
Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang
In 1915, Zhang Xueliang bid farewell to private school and entered the society: he faced the first big choice in his life. Standing at the crossroads of life, Zhang Xueliang's first thought was to study medicine, and when he told his father about this idea, Zhang Zuolin's head shook like a rattle. Would Zhang Xueliang give up studying medicine because of his father's opposition? Of course not, he did not take the military road arranged for him by his father.
Zhang Zuolin is a smart man, and he has already understood his son's personality. So, after his son objected to his proposal, he was not in a hurry. At this time, he was more worried about another thing: to let his son and his best friend Yu Wendou's daughter Yu Fengzhi become relatives.
When Zhang Zuolin was not yet flying Huang Tengda, he was saved by Yu Wendou, and he promised Yu Wendou at that time: once he gained power, he would definitely marry him as a child and daughter to repay his life-saving grace.
Yu Fengzhi is four years older than Zhang Xueliang, and although she is a showgirl, her personality is too orthodox, so she naturally cannot satisfy Zhang Xueliang. But in order to repay his father's favor, Zhang Xueliang finally decided to use his life to "repay the favor" for his father. At this point, Zhang Xueliang felt even more in his heart: his father owed him.
After completing his son's marriage, Zhang Zuolin began to plan how to guide his son to embark on the road of military service. He first suggested that his son study in Japan, because Zhang Xueliang hated Japan, and he refused his father's arrangement. At the same time, he proposed that he wanted to study abroad. This request, of course, was opposed by Zhang Zuolin.
In the end, Zhang Xueliang made a major decision under the influence of his father's radical law and the people around him, especially Zhang Boling: to dedicate himself to society and the country, abandon a comfortable life, and take the road of serving the people.
Shortly after making this decision, Zhang Xueliang resolutely walked into the Army Lecture Hall of the Three Eastern Provinces set up by Lao Tzu Zhang Zuolin. After half a year of arduous training, he graduated from the first artillery section with the first place in the overall score and was awarded the rank of colonel of the army artillery.
It was in the Northeast Lecture Hall that Zhang Xueliang's life and thinking underwent earth-shaking changes. With the help of instructor Guo Songling, he systematically studied military subjects such as tactics, military system, weapons, terrain, transportation, and city building, which laid a solid foundation for him to command the army in the future.
For Zhang Xueliang's step, Zhang Zuolin was very satisfied, and he did not hide his excitement. On the day of graduation, he patted his son's shoulder and said, "Well, little sixth son, I didn't disappoint your father!" Good job! ”
Shortly thereafter, Zhang Xueliang was promoted to regimental commander of the second regiment of the Third Mixed Brigade of the Fengtian Army. In 1922, in the First Zhifeng War, Zhang Xueliang, who served as the commander of the second echelon of the "Zhenwei Army" East Road Army, made a military achievement. At this time, Zhang Xueliang also officially walked to the decision-making circle of the Northeast Army, and he and his father became the superior and subordinate in the true sense.
At this time, of course, the happiest person was Zhang Zuolin, he had been worried about not being able to control his son, and now that he had the special status of the direct superior, he could often talk to his son in the way of the superior, and he found that it was really quite spiritual to use this trick to control his son.
As Zhang Zuolin became more and more serious about Zhang Xueliang, the relationship between father and son did not become more and more harmonious, on the contrary, the two fathers and sons often broke out into contradictions because of various issues such as decision-making. Zhang Xueliang valued Guo Songling, who was also a teacher and friend, while Zhang Zuolin valued Yang Yuting. Guo Songling and Yang Yuting represent exactly two camps, namely the "Non-Commissioned Officer Faction" and the "Lu Da Faction".
Because Zhang Xueliang trusted Guo Songling too much, he actually rebelled. This incident has become a major event between father and son, and it has even directly affected the father-son relationship between the two people.
In 1925, after the suppression of Guo Songling, the angry Zhang Zuolin even wanted to shoot Zhang Xueliang, and shouted at the people who came to dissuade him: "It is not that I raised it myself, it is good, if I don't personally kill Xiao Liuzi, I can't help everyone..."
In the end, it was Yang Yuting who stood up for Zhang Xueliang, who said bluntly: "Only Zhang Xueliang can persuade Guo Songling's men, he not only cannot kill, but also has to grant great power." ”
Many people in later generations believed that Zhang Zuolin did not really want to kill Zhang Xueliang at that time, but only used this way to resolve the resentment of the people in the northeast against Zhang Zuolin's father and son to stabilize people's hearts.
Feng Yuxiang, Zhang Zuolin, Duan Qirui
But Zhang Xueliang knew that at that time, his father was really angry, and he finally understood after this incident that he was too far away from his father in the military.
After Guo Songling rebelled, Zhang Xueliang also saw his father's unusual open-mindedness from his father's series of dispositions, and his worship of his father reached its peak.
Anyone who has studied psychology knows that "worship" is the foundation for consolidating and developing the paternity relationship. Once this foundation is established, many of the contradictions between father and son can be solved.
On the other hand, after having his own children, Zhang Xueliang also slowly gained a deeper understanding of the feelings of father and son in the process of becoming a father, and he understood his father's hard heart more than ever. Naturally, his relationship with his father gradually improved.
However, the father-son relationship between Zhang Xueliang and Zhang Zuolin has not been completely reconciled. There is always some unspeakable estrangement between them. Zhang Zuolin found that his son was always like a rebellious child in front of him. As soon as he touches his sensitive areas, his rebellious side will be revealed. Zhang Zuolin realized: His son's personality will hinder him from holding power.
But in the face of all this, Zhang Zuolin had nothing to do, he knew: this was caused by his own hands. In other words, if the son had been taken with him and lived in a complete family, he would not have been such a character.
Just when Zhang Zuolin was thinking about how to transform his son, his life came to an end.
On June 4, 1928, the seventeenth day of the fourth lunar month, Zhang Zuolin was killed in the Huanggutun Incident planned by the Japanese. This year, Zhang Xueliang was 27 years old, and this day was Zhang Xueliang's lunar birthday.
Zhang Zuolin was riding in the train car
On the day he learned of the bad news, Zhang Xueliang, who was in pain, subconsciously felt: "God, I am teasing their father and son." In his later years, speaking of this passage, he said:
"You say it's not god teasing us, my birthday is exactly my father's death day." So I later changed my birthday to the eighth day of the first month of May for my eldest sister (Yu Fengzhi). ”
The only last words Zhang Zuolin left behind when he died were: "I can't do it, let Xiao Liuzi quickly return to Fengtian and let him do a good job..."
More than ten days after his father's death, Zhang Xueliang returned to Fengtian in disguise to avoid the japanese eyeliner. When he returned, his father's body was already decomposed, and the moment he saw his dead father, he did not cry...
Seeing his biological father's tragic death, there were no tears? This anomaly has been debated by later generations. Some people think that Zhang Xueliang did not cry at that time because he was surrounded by dangers at that time, and he did not have time to take care of personal feelings; others believed that Zhang Xueliang did not have tears because he had always regarded his father as his superior, and his subordinates naturally did not have so much affection for his superiors.
The truth is: Zhang Xueliang couldn't cry at that time, and the reason why he couldn't cry was because his emotions were too complicated. This sentiment stems from his hatred of the Japanese who murdered his father, and from his decades-long feud with his father. These complex emotions hindered the outburst of painful emotions about the loss of his loved ones.
Two days after Zhang Xueliang returned to Fengtian, he held a solemn funeral for his father. At the funeral, various sounds surrounded Zhang Xueliang's ears: the cries of his family, the noise around him, the mourning of the military band... Suddenly, in the midst of these chaotic sounds, he heard a cry of "Little Six Sons" from his father's coffin. After suddenly hearing the call, Zhang Xueliang instinctively stared at his eyes and took a few steps in the direction of the coffin. But just as he walked to the coffin, he realized that it was he who had hallucinated, and no one would ever call him "Little Sixth Son" again.
At that moment, he finally cried out "Dad" with his legs soft on the coffin, and the moment he knelt down, his tears fell one by one like broken beads.
When the people around them saw the situation, they also cried and cried. At this time, Zhang Xueliang really realized that his father would never come back. On that day, Zhang Xueliang, who was about to turn 30, cried like a child. The warm moments of getting along with his father kept flashing in his mind, and the words of his father at his mother's funeral kept ringing in his ears: "Little Sixth Son, you remember, after I die, you will bury me here." ”
That day, Zhang Xueliang cried and fainted several times. In more than 20 years, this was the most intense day of his emotions. It was also after that vent that he finally reconciled emotionally with his father completely. The resentment of the past, the hatred of the past, the scars that his father had given him in his childhood, all disappeared on that day: he finally reconciled with his father completely.
But this reconciliation was only reached after the death of his father.
Is such a result a blessing or an unfortunate result? The answer to this question can only be given by Zhang Zuolin and Zhang Xueliang.
