Chiharu Shiota: A trembling soul

Coordinates: Shanghai Long Museum West Bund

The exhibition runs until March 6

On December 19, 2021, chiharu Shiota, the most extensive solo exhibition of the famous Japanese contemporary artist Chiharu Shiota to date, "The Fluttering Soul", traveled to Chinese mainland for the first time after the opening of Tokyo. About 80 groups of more than 100 installations, sculptures, videos, photographs, paintings, stage design artworks, etc., spanning the 1990s to the present, comprehensively review the artist's creative career in the past 25 years, and inspire people to think about the meaning of life and the inner working mode of the soul.

Chiharu Shiota is considered to be the most well-known fiber artist today, the first to use "thread" to the extreme. In this exhibition at the Long Museum, the giant installation "The Journey of the Unknown" at the entrance of the exhibition hall alone uses more than 2,000 red thread clusters, each of which is 133 meters long.

Chiharu Shiota's work is often inspired by personal experiences or emotions, which then evolve into discussions of life-related issues, such as life, death, and relationships. Yantian redefines the public's perception of memory and consciousness by collecting everyday objects such as shoes, keys, beds, chairs, and clothes, and wrapping them around a vast abstract grid. Chiharu Shiota explores "existence in the absence" with her installations, and in her sculptures, performance videos, photographs and paintings, she also reveals moments that cannot express emotions in words.

Xu Bing's language

Coordinates: Pudong Art Museum

The exhibition runs until 23 August

On December 24, 2021, Xu Bing," a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and a well-known artist, opened his large-scale solo exhibition "The Language of Xu Bing" at the Pudong Art Museum. Xu Bing is widely regarded as an important conceptual artist in linguistics and semiotics today, and his works have been exhibited at the National Art Museum of China, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, and the British Museum in the United Kingdom.

The "Language of Xu Bing", which was unveiled at the Pudong Art Museum, is also the first time that Xu Bing has held a large-scale solo exhibition in Shanghai in his half-century artistic career. The exhibition presents about 70 groups (nearly 1,000) of important works by artists, including prints, installations, documentary records, manuscripts, videos, and documentaries, distributed on the first and third floors of the museum. This has also become the largest exhibition area since the opening of the Pudong Art Museum, and the exhibition period is as long as 8 months.

One of the most noteworthy works is Xu Bing's masterpiece "Book of Heaven". From the start of construction to the completion of this work, which lasted up to four years, Xu Bing used the structural laws of Chinese characters to fabricate glyphs, created about 4,000 "pseudo-Chinese characters" that looked like real Chinese characters, and used ancient hand engraving and printing methods to produce 120 sets and a set of four volumes of the "Book of Heaven". Countless viewers can hardly believe that these exquisite "classics" cannot read anything.

Na Tian Wei Shu - Han Mei Lin Tianshu Art Forbidden City Exhibition

Coordinates: The Palace Museum

The exhibition runs until 20 March

Coincidentally, at the Palace Museum in Beijing, there is also an exhibition about the "Book of Heaven" being held.

The word "Book of Heaven" was first born in the Taihao period. In the Simple Tao Te Ching, it is stated: "Man offers Heluo, asks what is it, and Hao yue is the Book of Heaven." The word Heluo is put together, indicating that it is the meaning of the river map and the book of Luo. Fuxi is said to have been inspired by this and created a complete set of characters.

The River Map and the Book of Luo are ancient cultural heritage. It has attracted countless scholars for thousands of years to continuously study it. In November 2014, with the approval of the State Council, the "Legend of Hetuluo Book" was included in the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.

The inspiration for Han Meilin's works in this exhibition is mainly the Chinese character elements of the pre-Qin Dynasty, including oracle bones, Cliff stone carvings, bamboo and wood tablets, ancient rock paintings, stone drum texts, etc. He talked about these ancient characters and symbols, through copying, sorting, and re-creating, and finally converged into this "Heavenly Book" art exhibition. The exhibition presents a total of 1500 works, which combine the multiple meanings of calligraphy, art and literary history.

Moriggio Cattelan: The Last Judgment

Coordinates: UCCA Ullens Center for Contemporary Art

The exhibition runs until 20 February

Remember that banana sold for $150,000 at Art Basel Miami 2019? Its creator, the famous Italian contemporary artist Mauregio Cattelan, came to Beijing to hold his first solo exhibition in China.

The exhibition reviews Cattelan's creative journey from the 1980s to the present, presenting 29 representative works by artists, including installations, sculptures and performance performances, including the famous "sky-high" banana , Comedians.

Born in 1960, Maurizio Cattelan is one of the most popular and controversial artists in contemporary art. His creative freedom draws on people and objects in the real world, and his works are full of jokes about art and institutions. He is particularly adept at placing materials, objects, and moves in challenging arenas in a playful and provocative way that inspires people to comment on and engage with them.

Part of the works in this exhibition are based on Cattelan's life and his life experience as an artist, and the self-centered superficial personality unexpectedly wraps the multiple faces of the artist's individual identity, triggering the audience to face death and the impermanence of life, especially the artist's own contemplation of death.
