In the northwest of Hunan Province, there is a place called Zhangjiajie City, which is the former Dayong City. Zhangjiajie City is located in the middle and upper reaches of Lishui, in the hinterland of Wuling Mountain, and is a famous tourist attraction in China.
But perhaps many people do not know that the name Zhangjiajie City was only changed in 1994, before that, it was called Dayong City. So why did Dayong City change its name to Zhangjiajie City? Before we get into this, let's take a look at the history of this place:
Dayong has a long history, and during the Qin Dynasty, the county system began to be implemented, and it was under the jurisdiction of Qianzhong County at that time. In the Han Dynasty, on the basis of the county system of the Qin Dynasty, a feudal state was set up. In 202 BC, it was under the jurisdiction of Wuling County. During the Three Kingdoms period, Wuling County was changed to Tianmen County, and the boundaries of Dayong came under the jurisdiction of Tianmen County.
In the Tang Dynasty, the administrative division of the country at this time became ten provinces, and Dayong at that time was under the jurisdiction of Shannan Province. During the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, the dayong territory at that time was under the jurisdiction of the State of Chu.
In the Song Dynasty, the administrative division of the country at this time became the Twenty-third Road, and the area of the current Zhangjiajie City was under the jurisdiction of Liyang County at that time, which was called Cili County at that time. In the Yuan Dynasty, the administrative division of the country at that time was set up with eleven provinces, and in 1277 AD, the Lizhou Road Governorate was set up, and Cili County was under the jurisdiction of the Lizhou Road Governorate.
During the Ming Dynasty, the administrative division at that time became thirteen envoys, and in 1369 AD, the then Cili Prefecture was changed to Dayong County, which was under the jurisdiction of Lizhou at that time.
During the Qing Dynasty, the administrative divisions of the country became twenty-three provinces. In 1730 AD, the land was reformed and returned to the stream, and Lizhou became a directly administered state. During the Republic of China period, the territory of the current Zhangjiajie City was under the jurisdiction of Chenyuan Province.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, Dayong was first under the jurisdiction of yongshun special region, and later under the jurisdiction of the Xiangxi Miao Autonomous Region. In 1985, Dayong County was abolished and Dayong City was established, which at this time belonged to the county-level city. In 1988, with the approval of the state, the prefecture-level Dayong City was established. In 1994, Dayong City was renamed Zhangjiajie City.
As for the reason why Dayong City was renamed Zhangjiajie City, it is not difficult to see that it is to improve its popularity and develop tourism, after the original name of Dayong City was renamed Zhangjiajie City, its popularity has indeed been greatly improved, and it has played a great role in promoting local tourism and economic development.
