According to foreign media reports, on Thursday local time, the US Road Safety Administration said that Tesla is recalling more than 475,000 Model 3 and Model S electric vehicles to solve problems such as rearview cameras and trunks that increase the risk of collision. Specifically, the recall will cover approximately 356,000 Model 3s from the 2017-2020 model and approximately 119,000 Model Ss from the 2014-2021 models. The total number of recalled vehicles reportedly approached the 500,000 vehicles Tesla delivered last year.

For the Tesla Model 3, the reason for the recall is that the rearview camera cable harness may be damaged due to the opening and closing of the trunk lid, thus preventing the rearview camera image display. For the Tesla Model S, the reason for the recall is that a latch issue with the front hood could cause the trunk to open without warning and hinder the driver's visibility, increasing the risk of crash. NHTSA said Tesla was not aware of any collisions, injuries or deaths related to problems with its Model 3 and Model S cars.
From the current point of view, the recall is not only related to the US market, the Chinese market has also been affected, and not only models imported from the United States, but also domestic models are also deeply involved. On December 31, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) released the latest recall plan for Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. to file a recall plan and decided to recall the following vehicles from now on.
1. Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled a total of 19,697 model S electric vehicles imported from January 21, 2015 to November 18, 2020, with a production date.
Vehicles within the scope of this recall may have a slightly backward alignment of the front load compartment latch and the lock latch, which does not affect the locking of the primary lock latch, but may affect the locking of the secondary lock latch. When the primary lock latch is accidentally released, if the secondary lock latch is not locked, the front trunk cover may suddenly open during the vehicle driving, affecting the driver's line of sight, increasing the risk of collision accidents, and there is a safety hazard.
Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. will inspect the secondary locking latch device of the front trunk cover for the vehicles within the scope of the recall free of charge, and if the front trunk cover is found to be correctly locked by the second-level locking latch device, the front trunk locking device will be repositioned and installed to ensure that it is in the correct position to eliminate safety hazards.
2. Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. recalled some imported Model 3 electric vehicles with production dates from October 4, 2018 to November 20, 2019, totaling 35,836 units.
3. Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled some domestically produced Model 3 electric vehicles with production dates from October 14, 2019 to December 27, 2020, with a total of 144208 units.
After repeated opening and closing of vehicles within the second and third ranges of the recall, excessive wear of the trunk wiring harness may be caused. If this wear causes the core separation of the coaxial cable, it may cause the reversing image to not work properly, thus affecting the driver's field of vision when reversing, and in extreme cases, it will increase the risk of collision when reversing, and there is a safety hazard.
Tesla Motors (Beijing) Co., Ltd. and Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. will inspect the trunk wiring harness free of charge for vehicles within the scope of the recall. If the degree of wear is within the allowable range of the design of the coaxial cable, a protective cover will be installed for the trunk harness to ensure that the harness has a sufficient bend radius when the trunk is closed to prevent further wear; if the degree of wear is beyond the allowable range of the coaxial cable design, the vehicle will be replaced with a new harness and a protective cover will be installed to eliminate the safety hazard.
Judging from the problem of the recall, it is basically the same as the problem that has arisen in the US market. From the perspective of the scale of the recall, the number of domestic model recalls is much higher than that of imported models, although domestic models have achieved a high level of localization, but its production standards are still in accordance with the United States, which may be one of the reasons for Tesla's domestic and imported model recalls.
This is Tesla's second recall in a month. On December 3, Tesla (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. recalled some domestically produced Model Y electric vehicles with production dates from February 4, 2021 to October 30, 2021, totaling 21,599 units. The reason for the recall is that some of the vehicles within the scope of the recall may not meet the design requirements due to the manufacturer's manufacturing reasons. In the process of vehicle use, the steering knuckle may be deformed or broken, and the suspension linkage may be detached from the knuckle under extreme stress conditions, affecting the driving control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of collision accidents, and there are potential safety hazards.
