Gu Shengyue graduated from Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1948 and from the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1952. He has successively served as a professor at Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, the director of the Department of Chinese Painting, the chairman of the Hangzhou Artists Association, the vice president of the Zhejiang Academy of Painting, the president of the Zhejiang Figure Painting Research Association, and the vice chairman of the China Gongbi Painting Art Committee.
