Focus on Design Week | Public Buildings Special Exhibition: How Does Design Empower Urban Construction?

Design is not only about the plan, the product, but also the architecture and the city. How does design explore the diversified solutions of urban and ecological environment, production and life from the multiple dimensions of people and people, people and space, people and cities, and people and nature? As the "Capital of Design", how can Shenzhen express the spiritual core of the "Capital of Design" with the construction of physical space? On December 25, 2021, "Between Bricks and Tiles: Shenzhen Public Building Special Exhibition" was exhibited in Hall 212, 2nd Floor, the main exhibition hall of shenzhen design week 2021 (Shenzhen Shangcheng), in this exhibition, between the bricks and tiles of the city, see the new momentum of design-driven urban development. The special exhibition is hosted by the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government and co-organized by the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau and the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Construction and Public Works until January 3, 2022.

Focus on Design Week | Public Buildings Special Exhibition: How Does Design Empower Urban Construction?

23 public building exhibits give a glimpse into the future of Shenzhen

212, the 2nd floor of Shenye Shangcheng, is a shop that has not yet been renovated. During shenzhen design week, the store became a display space, exhibiting 23 shenzhen public building models and graphic materials provided by the Shenzhen Municipal Department of Architecture and Public Works. This is also some of the major urban public buildings that Shenzhen people pay the most attention to, and they are also important buildings that determine the future urban style of Shenzhen.

Visitors can get a closer look at the present and future of Shenzhen's public buildings as they wander through the "landscape and water" composed of bricks. The future international performing arts center is two flowing and elegant "eggs"; the reform and opening up exhibition hall has a bright and translucent façade; the Shenzhen Financial Center, which is the shape of "Golden Stone Stacked Mountain", exquisite and simple and dynamic; Shenzhen children will also usher in a super cool Shenzhen Science and Technology Museum (new museum), which is the work of Zaha Hadid's team, and the equally cool Shenzhen Bay Cultural Square brought by the MAD team, the roof of the library, café, and standard exhibition space forms a green space directly connected to the city. There's a surreal atmosphere here... Among the 20 architectural models that have far-reaching influences on Shenzhen are arranged in the order of three major plates of campus architecture, medical architecture and culture + other buildings, among these models, it is possible to imagine the future appearance of Shenzhen as a city.

On-site explanation + video explanation, popular design is closely related to people's livelihood

Space and people, people and nature, individual buildings and regional environments... There are many real problems in the governance of megacities, and in architectural design and urban design, the solutions to these problems are being actively explored.

In addition to the model, many exhibits have videos of all-round interpretation of architectural design, such as architectural design concepts, spatial layout, traffic routes, advanced technologies, etc., and there are also exhibition journals that tell the small stories behind the building. For example, how to solve the problem of building engineering information that matches the consistency between architectural design and construction reality, people can see the BIM technology used in public buildings; how to make the relationship between buildings and the environment more friendly, citizens can see that in many architectural designs, the auxiliary functional space is placed underground; how to let children better show their personality in the school, parents can see that the school adopts a retreat design to provide more expandable practice space, and creates rock fields, sound fields, water fields, Pastures and other new future-oriented learning spaces... Brick by brick, we can see that the various dimensions of urban development, such as facility replacement, educational innovation, ecological protection, community building, renewal and conservation, etc., are given full attention, discussion and practice in a design manner.

Not only that, during the exhibition, the Shenzhen Municipal Bureau of Construction and Public Works ordered the relevant project leaders to introduce the construction process of the people's livelihood project to the public in the exhibition area. Ke Youhua, project design director of the new Huanggang port, introduced to the public: the new Huanggang port was rebuilt on the original site, and the existing cargo inspection and customs clearance function was gradually transferred to other ports on the east and west wings of Shenzhen, positioned as a pure travel inspection port; Wang Zijia, director of medical and scientific research project design, introduced that the HARBIN (Shenzhen) key laboratory cluster project plans to use the intensive design concept to build eight national key laboratories, which will provide a scientific research platform for more than 10 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in the future, of which, The State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resources will study the ways and methods of shenzhen's black and odorous water treatment through real-life simulation, and some other high-tech national laboratories will become a booster for the future development of science and technology in Shenzhen...

The curator of this exhibition is Zhang Yuxing, one of the co-curators of this year's Design Week. He is also a member of the Urban Design Expert Committee of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development. He also said that today's public building design standards are greatly improved, design standards are international first-class, new advanced design technology, software technology, construction technology, material technology, structural technology, etc. will be applied in public buildings.

Zhang Yuxing also said at the Shenzhen Design Week press conference on December 22: The special exhibition selected some typical Shenzhen public buildings, which are closely related to the daily life of the people, and are a kind of benchmark project in Shenzhen's future, which reflects how design returns to people's livelihood and pays attention to people's livelihood. Secondly, technological innovation. In his view, "design to solve problems" must use new technologies, especially Shenzhen is a high-tech city, there are a large number of very good technologies, such as digital design, digital construction technology, the Shenzhen Municipal Government is making every effort to promote BIM technology, this time specially set up BIM technology display, with multimedia methods to show the audience.

With the design of "stacking mountains and rivers", it dissolves the professional anxiety of ordinary audiences

In Zhang Yuxing's view, the problem of the design itself lies in the small circle. Design also requires professionals to break boundaries, and designers in different professions and fields should learn from each other and promote design development from bit by bit. His special exhibition of public buildings not only lies in the publicity and people's livelihood of the exhibits, but also in the interactivity of expressions.

Therefore, in the exhibition hall, between the clear water concrete without any modification, more than 4,000 lightweight concrete blocks and more than a dozen wooden boxes built the artistic conception of "civil engineering mountains + landscape islands". Between the civil engineering mountains and the landscape islands, inlaid is a building model, or simple wood, or revealed a metallic texture, and THE LED is constantly playing design renderings, built real scene drawings, architectural design concepts, technical introductions and other information.

The same brick and tile design elements have also been used on the giant poster, and the arches made of quaint bricks are ready to emerge from traditional culture, constructing an "S" shape under the modern aesthetic and echoing the main visual symbol of this year's design week.

It is this kind of exhibition design, which has a simple and rough texture, and also gives people a feeling of wandering, so that the viewer is not deterred by the sharpness of the profession. "The problem that public building exhibitions need to solve is that they are too practical and too functional, and the audience is prone to the tension and anxiety when they accept new and unknown knowledge, and I am thinking about how to create a more humane and interesting scene for it, rather than instilling information on the audience." Zhang Yuxing said, "This is an interesting scene, a three-dimensional stacking that resembles both a city and a landscape island, interspersed with models and video screens in the scene of stacking mountains and rivers, a way to visit the garden to see the knowledge behind these models." When people go in, they still see the models, or the information on the screen, but they will relax. This is to use design to resolve the anxiety of ordinary people to accept professional information. ”
