Back in 1905, the Zhang family received bad news - Zhang Shugui died of illness in office. Zhang Zizhong studied hard, and in 1911 was admitted to the most famous law school in northern China at that time, the Tianjin Beiyang Law and Politics School, and it was here that he first came into contact with new ideas such as the Three People's Principles, which caused a huge impact on this young man who had been reading sages since childhood, so at the end of the same year, Zhang Zizhong resolutely joined the Chinese League, threw himself into the revolutionary movement, and his character became more and more resolute.
Five years later, he was recommended by his friends in the same village, appreciated by Feng Yuxiang, and quickly sent from lieutenant to platoon leader, and then changed from platoon leader to student regiment leader, and his ability improved rapidly. After this incident, everyone's feelings became deeper and deeper, and everyone respected Zhang Zizhong from the bottom of their hearts. In January 1931, after the chaotic Battle of the Central Plains, Zhang Zizhong was appointed commander of the 38th Division, stationed in Shanxi, and in June of the same year, the Nanjing government began to reorganize the national army, and the Third Army was renamed the 29th Army.
In January 1933, the main force of the 29th Army was ordered to Tongzhou, Sanhe, Jixian and Yutian. This was the first time in Zhang Zizhong's life that he had fought the Japanese army. After this incident, the Japanese hated Zhang Zizhong to the bone and always thought about how to overthrow him, so the Japanese used despicable means of "provoking dissension". But Zhang Zizhong knew that he could not commit suicide, if he committed suicide, he would follow the hearts of the Japanese, and he would live and continue to fight the Japanese devils! In the Battle of Linyi in 1938, Zhang Zizhong led the 59th Army to repel the Itagaki Division, which was known as "Japan's best" three times, laying a solid foundation for the victory of Taierzhuang.
In May 1940, the Japanese army cut off the Chongqing transport line, and gathered 300,000 troops to launch the Battle of Zaoyi, Zhang Zizhong received the news, the first time to gather the troops to fight, in fact, as the supreme commander of the group army, Zhang Zizhong could not personally go out, but he still insisted on going to the front.

On May 7, Zhang Zizhong's team crossed the Xiang river, continued to the north, and on the 14th, a fierce battle broke out with the Japanese army, but the difference between the numbers of the enemy and us was too large, Zhang Zizhong's side was only more than 1500 people, while the Japanese army had more than 6000 people, and the Japanese army also had aircraft artillery as cover, and launched 9 charges in one day and night.
Zhang Zizhongfang casualties rose sharply, and he himself was unfortunately shot in the left arm, from beginning to end, Zhang Zizhong never had a hint of retreat, after a simple bandage, he continued to command the battle, but the Japanese army charged again and again, it was difficult to resist after all, at 4 p.m. on the 16th, Zhang Zizhong's entire army was destroyed, Zhang Zizhong was shot 16 times, and he was martyred at the age of 49.
After receiving the news, Huang Weigang immediately organized a death squad to fight to the death to regain Zhang Zizhong's body, and the Japanese army, which regarded Zhang Zizhong as a thorn in the eye, also admired his bravery and ordered to stop bombing and avoid hurting Zhang Zizhong's body.
On May 28, 1940, Zhang Zizhong's body was safely delivered to Chongqing. Chiang Kai-shek, Feng Yuxiang and others, armed with a black veil, personally sent him on his last journey, and on that day, Chiang Kai-shek helped the coffin and wept bitterly, and the people who spontaneously came to the coffin also wept.
After the founding of New China, General Zhang Zizhong was posthumously recognized as a revolutionary martyr, and later named "100 heroic and exemplary figures who made outstanding contributions to the founding of New China", and he was a person worthy of our Chinese respect.
