Duntai won a big order for Samsung OLED driver chips, and Samsung QD-OLED really came

Recently, Hu Zhengda, chairman of Duntai, a major driver IC plant, pointed out that the demand is quite strong, and has signed a long contract (LTA) with all major customers and fabs for the next few years to ensure stable demand and supply. Hu Zhengda added that Duntai has shipped hundreds of millions of OLED driver ICs to Samsung this year. I am afraid that among them is the driver chip prepared for Samsung QD-OLED TVs.

At the end of last month, Samsung Display's two-year-long QD-OLED panel was mass-produced, breaking the pattern that the world's large-size OLED panels were previously exclusively supplied by another South Korean company, LG Display (LGD). At present, Samsung QD-OLED panel has achieved mass production in November, and its products will be mainly positioned in the OLED TV and OLED e-sports display markets next year.

In the field of innovative display technology, OLED has always been a benchmark for high-end. Thanks to the self-luminous characteristics of OLED, it can bring better color reproduction, high responsiveness, excellent dark field, etc., which are widely used in flagship mobile phones and TVs. Coupled with its flexible display characteristics, it is also widely used in creative display, special-shaped display and other fields.

At present, many suppliers have emerged in the field of small-size OLED panels, the most prominent of which is Samsung, followed by domestic BOE, Huaxing Optoelectronics and so on. However, in the field of large-size OLED panels, LGD is a big one, and all OLED TV panels currently on the market are from LGD.

This time, Samsung announced the realization of mass production of QD-OLED, which just made up for Samsung's shortcomings in the field of OLED TVs. Since then, Samsung's strength in the field of display has reached a higher level, whether it is liquid crystal or quantum dots, or OLED, Samsung has ample right to speak. According to BusinessKorea, Samsung will launch its first OLED TV during CES 2022, a landmark event that may mean that Samsung, the leader of the quantum dot camp, has joined the OLED camp.

With the development of the past two years, Samsung is also increasing investment in the OLED field, Samsung QD-OLED is really coming, the entire OLED TV industry is afraid it will have a profound impact. For the entire OLED TV industry, the arrival of Samsung QD-OLED has brought fresh vitality to the entire TV market.

In the global smart TV market, in October this year, the latest data from market research agency Omdia showed that the sales growth trend of OLED TVs this year was obvious, with sales of 4.24 million units in the first three quarters, exceeding the data of 3.65 million units sold in the whole of last year. Global OLED TV sales are expected to reach 3.77 million units in the second half of the year, up 53% from 2.46 million units in the same period last year. Omdia expects OLED TV sales to be 6.5 million units in 2021.

It is not difficult to find that the market's expectations for OLED TVs are very high. However, there is only one supplier in the field of large-size OLED panels, LGD, and the supply of production capacity and the high price of panels have led to the development of OLED TVs. With the emergence of Samsung QD-OLED panels, this pattern will be changed, production capacity will be greatly improved, prices will also fall, and the smart TV industry will truly usher in the moment of OLED popularization.

In addition, on November 16, TCL Huaxing Optoelectronics (hereinafter referred to as "TCL Huaxing") released 5 new display technologies and display products at its global display ecology conference, of which 65-inch 8K inkjet printing OLED is currently the world's largest size OLED panel based on printing technology, inkjet printED OLED seems to be becoming another way to promote the development of OLED TV.

The diversification of OLED panel supply sources will therefore solve a series of problems such as supply chain security, price, and quantity, and eventually greatly ripen the OLED product market. It is also possible that because of the maturity of OLED diversified technology, the form and application scenarios of TVs have achieved breakthroughs, thus driving a wave of replacement tides.

The emergence of Samsung OLED driver chip large orders is enough to explain the trend of Samsung's layout QD-OLED TV, and also indicates that Samsung QD-OLED TV is really coming.
