Ancient Chinese glass in the War and Han Dynasties

As for the origin of the craftsmen who made glassware during the Han Dynasty, there is a theory that they came to China from West Asia or Egypt.

Of course, on the glass that is considered to be from the tombs of the Southern and Northern Dynasties in Hepu, Guangxi, and on the Tang Dynasty glassware excavated from the Famen Temple in Shaanxi, the possibility of "foreign artifacts" and "foreign craftsmen" is very large. These excavations are far from the Warring Han Dynasty, and relevant data show that the glass making process of the Warring Han Dynasty has tended to decline due to war in the Post-Han Dynasty, and has been lost to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, although it has been restored since then, but the level of craftsmanship is not at all comparable to that of the Warring Han Dynasty.

The fourth volume of the Biography of Mu Tianzi records that "... Ding You, the Son of Heaven ascended to the mountain of quarrying, so he took the quarry. The Son of Heaven casts the people of the heavy into a vessel on the black water. Utensils and clothing are good without boundaries..."

There is no indication of the original origin of the craftsmen here, but "... Make the heavy people, cast into a vessel on the black water", revealing an important message, the technical level of local craftsmen during this period has been fully able to meet the requirements of Mu Tianzi's products, that is, during the Western Zhou Mu Tianzi period, or at least before the Warring States, China's glass craft has matured.

With regard to the origin of craftsmen, it is necessary to clarify the concept that the understanding of the region has often appeared misleading and misleading for a long time.

Today we always use "China" as an inherent concept to distinguish between "domestic" and "foreign", but in fact, in this land two thousand years ago, the concept of "state" was not fixed, the region was more of a sphere of influence, the sphere of influence was intertwined rather than completely separated, on the Asian plate, strong or weak, developed or backward, rich or poor... Just as today we cannot yet confirm the boundaries of "Xia", there are still many vague understandings of the history of "Shang", and how many feudal states are there in "Zhou"? After dividing the "Western Zhou" and "Eastern Zhou", how many large and small feudal states were divided into the "Spring and Autumn" period in the "Eastern Zhou"?

It is obviously inappropriate to use the modern concept of "state" to solidify a sphere of influence more than two thousand years ago or even longer.

There are no clear boundaries, but it is more conducive to the convergence of nationalities and cultures.
