Zhang Jian worked hard in calligraphy and did not fade away from old age. Zhang Xiao's calligraphy is the foundation of Ou, Chu, and Yan, and according to his own Linshu records, when he was young, Linchu Suiliang's "Dead Tree Endowment" and "Sacred Order" and Yan Zhenqing's "Self-Written Confession" and "Battle for Seats" were posted. At the age of forty-one, he came to the "Crane Inscription", and at the age of forty-five, he came to the "Cao'e Monument". After Zhang Xiao was middle-aged, he especially loved Huang Tingjian. In his later years, he was still in Linhuaisu and Sun Guoting.

Judging from the evolution of Zhang Xiao's writing style in his lifetime, it can be divided into three periods:

In the early days (22-40 years old), the style of writing pursued stability, modesty and integrity, and the pen was both European and Chu, and with willow meaning, and the representative works were "Four Hours of Reading Music" and so on;

In the middle period (41-65 years old), he deliberately sought change, won the charm of the valley, the knot body was dashing and healthy, the penmanship was tenacious and strong, and the representative works include "Ink bamboo fu" and so on;

In the later period (65-72 years old), he integrated all the families and used his pen to make his own ingenuity, thick and simple, and the taste of the books was strong, forming the atmosphere of "Zhang Shu", and the representative works were "The Record of Dong'ao Mountain Villa" and "WangjiaLou Lian".

The calligraphy theorist Sun Xun listed Zhang Jian as an important calligrapher "famous for his calligraphy" in the book "History of Calligraphy in the Republic of China", and after studying Zhang Xiao's letters, he said: "Zhang Shi was good at calligraphy, learned yan and mixed with Ouyang rate. The intention is intoxicating, the outside is soft and the inside is rigid; the font is far away, and the demeanor is peaceful. There is a style of Sui and Tang Dynasty Kaixing transmutation. Sun Qian believes that Zhang Jian "wrote at will in his later years, strange and energetic, and free to create." ”
