The "Chang'an School" is an art group represented by Shi Lu, Zhao Wangyun, Li Zisheng, Kang Shiyao, He Haixia, Fang Jizhong and other painters, whose painting themes are mainly landscapes, figures, and flowers and birds; their works mostly depict the natural scenery and customs of the northwest, especially in Shaanxi, especially the landscapes and waters of the Loess Plateau in northern Shaanxi; in terms of creative techniques, they are committed to the inheritance and innovation of Chinese painting, and put forward the artistic proposition of "one hand reaching out to tradition, the other hand reaching out to life".

In the 1960s, the Xi'an art group represented by Zhao Wangyun and Shi Lu organized a traveling exhibition in Beijing and other places, and their landscape paintings characterized by the simplicity and stubbornness of the Loess Plateau and the figure paintings showing the image of the industrious and simple peasants in northern Shaanxi caused a sensation in the Chinese painting world, known as the "Chang'an School".

Shi Lu (December 13, 1919 – August 25, 1982), formerly known as Feng Yaheng, was a contemporary Chinese painter from Renshou County, Sichuan Province.

In 1959, he created "Turning to Northern Shaanxi", and his reputation was growing. Later, he founded the Chang'an School of painting with Zhao Wangyun. He is good at people, landscapes, flowers and birds. In the early days, the painting style was more realistic, using a solid and rigorous brush, painting more revolutionary themes; in the later period, the painting style was strange and vigorous, often with the theme of Huashan and Lotus, and the pen power was indulgent. He once served as the executive director of the China Artists Association, the executive director of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, the chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Artists Association, the chairman of the Shaanxi Calligraphers Association, the honorary president of the Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Chinese Painting, and the member of the Chinese Painting Research Institute. He is the author of "Shi Luxue Picture Book" and the film script "Eagle in the Storm".

Zhao Wangyun (30 September 1906 – 9 March 1977), born in Shulu, Hebei (present-day Xinji, Hebei), also known as Xinguo, was a modern painter. In the early years, he organized the Roaring Rainbow Art Society with Wang Senran and Li Kuchan, and founded the Anti-Japanese War Pictorial in 1937. Good at landscapes and figures, creation-oriented to life, painting style in the simplicity and thickness of the contains elegance, especially in the expression of northern Shaanxi landscapes and the labor life of people of all ethnic groups, for one of the founding painters of the Chang'an School of painting. His major works include "Rural Sketch collection", "Northwest Travel Painting Collection", "Egyptian Sketch Painting Collection", "Zhao Wangyun Painting Collection" and so on. He once served as the director of the Cultural Relics Division of the Ministry of Culture of the Northwest Military and Political Committee, the executive director of the China Artists Association, the first chairman of the Shaanxi Provincial Artists Association, the deputy of the Shaanxi Provincial People's Congress, the member of the Shaanxi Provincial Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and the deputy director of the Shaanxi Provincial Bureau of Culture.

Li Zisheng (September 1919 – November 1987) was a native of Yanchang, Shaanxi. Good at Chinese painting. In 1940, he entered the Fine Arts Department of Lu Xun Art and Literature College in Yan'an. In 1953, he studied at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He successively served as a cadre of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region Literary Association and the Northwest China-Soviet Friendship Association, a director and secretary general of the Northwest American Association, a vice president of the Northwest Pictorial, and after 1955, he served as the secretary general, vice chairman, chairman and consultant of the Shaanxi Branch of the China Artists Association. He is the fourth standing director of the China Artists Association. His works include "Home at the Han River", "Liu Zhidan Hits the Soil Fence", "SangShan Xing", "JiangQingShan Show", "Li River Scenery" and so on.

Kang Shiyao (1921-1985), pen name Kang Xun, a native of Bo'ai County, Henan Province, lived in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province for a long time, and was good at Chinese painting. He graduated from Wuchang Art College in the 1940s. In 1956, he served as the director of the Chinese Painting Research Office of the Xi'an Branch of the China Artists Association; studied painting art with Shi Lu, Zhao Wangyun, etc., devoted himself to the innovation of Chinese painting, and was one of the main painters of the "Chang'an School"; the paintings were fresh and elegant as the main tone, and the work belt was written, with its own style; the works participated in large-scale art exhibitions at home and abroad and won awards many times; before his death, he was a member of the China Artists Association, the executive director of the Shaanxi Provincial Artists Association, the deputy director of the Folk Craft Professional Committee of the China Arts and Crafts Society, the vice president of the Shaanxi Academy of Chinese Painting, and a first-class artist.

He Haixia (October 7, 1908 – August 5, 1998), courtesy name Ying, was a Chinese poet. A native of Beijing. In his early years, he studied painting with Zhang Daqian, and in 1946, he entered the River with Zhang Shi to sketch. In 1956, he was transferred to the Shaanxi Artists Association to engage in professional creation, and was one of the representative painters of the "Chang'an School". In 1983, he was appointed vice president of the Shaanxi Provincial Academy of Chinese Painting, and soon after, he was transferred to the Beijing Institute of Chinese Painting. Good at landscapes, but also flowers. His creations often integrate green brushwork with ink brush meaning, novelty, strong penmanship, and thick and beautiful style. Representative works include "Xiyue Zhengrong He Zhuangya", "Northern Shaanxi Qingqiu", "Looking at the Mountains and Looking at the Motherland's Mountains" and so on.
