Frequent night ups are considered by many elderly people, especially elderly men, to be a normal phenomenon of aging, but too much nocturnal urine may be a physical problem...
Today we will talk about how to count the frequency of nocturnal urination? How to reduce the distress caused by nocturia?

01
How to count the frequency of nocturnal urination?
JINGYITONG
We say nocturia, is to have to get up during sleep to urinate, morning urine and bedtime urination do not count;
Nocturnal frequency may be increased frequency of urination, high urine output, or both, so the following 3 criteria can be used as a reference:
#
Criterion 1: Get up for many consecutive days and urinate more than 2 times.
Criterion 2: Nocturia urine volume greater than during the day, or greater than 500 ml (about one mineral water bottle).
Criterion 3: Nighttime urine output (ml) / body weight (kg) greater than 10.
*Note: If one of the above 3 criteria is met, even if there is a lot of nocturia.
02
What's wrong with nocturnal urination?
Adults normally urinate about 4 to 6 times during the day and about 0 to 2 times at night.
Increased nocturia has physiological causes as well as pathological causes, and is often a multifactorial overlap!
There are two cases of "nocturnal urination":
Physiological polyuria: more common is to drink too much water before going to bed, eat too salty, etc.;
Pathological polyuria: usually due to decreased bladder volume, heart disease, urinary tract disease, etc.
Doctor tips: If you find increased nocturia, you should pay attention to distinguishing between increased urination frequency or increased urine output, and it is recommended to remember the urination diary including "fluid intake, urine volume, frequency, and accompanying symptoms" to facilitate the doctor's diagnosis.
03
Increased nocturia is vigilant against 4 diseases
Prostate disease
No:1
Nocturia is one of the earliest symptoms of prostatic hyperplasia, which causes a decrease in bladder volume and a decrease in bladder stability, resulting in an increase in nocturia.
When prostatic hyperplasia blocks the outlet of the bladder, the residual urine volume of the bladder is significantly increased, which reduces the effective capacity of the bladder, and it will also cause an increase in the number of nocturia!
Expert reminder
Benign prostatic hyperplasia is the most common cause of frequent night up in middle-aged and elderly men, and must be vigilant!
Pelvic floor muscle relaxation, urinary tract infections
No:2
For women, the common cause of nocturia is "urinary tract infection".
Because a bacterial infection irritates the bladder and urethra, it can lead to frequent urination, as well as symptoms such as urgency, painful urination, and burning sensation of the urethra.
In addition, women are prone to overactive bladder and decreased bladder compliance, which can also cause increased nocturia.
diabetes
No:3
Diabetes mellitus can cause dry mouth, polydipsia, and may also cause increased nocturia.
diabetes insipidus
No:4
Diabetes insipidus is caused by abnormal secretion, release or transport of antidiuretic hormone, inability to control the excretion of urine, frequent urination, severe cases may be less than half an hour apart from each urination, and the amount of urine is huge.
Due to a large amount of urination, it will also increase the pressure on the kidneys, resulting in water loss in the body, usually the total daily urine output is often 4 to 10L, or even more.
04
How to relieve nocturia?
Seek medical attention as soon as possible
Nocturia is obviously frequent, it is recommended to go to the hospital for a detailed examination as soon as possible to clarify the cause and symptomatic treatment.
Light diet Control drinking water before bedtime
Recommended by the Dietary Guidelines 2016
Adults should consume no more than 6 grams of salt per day
However, the actual intake of Chinese residents is seriously exceeded, with an average of up to 10.5 grams per person per day. Eating too salty will drink more water, increasing the burden on the kidneys, resulting in increased urination.
Patients with prostatic hyperplasia, which is frequently plagued by nocturia, should drink as little water as possible half an hour before bedtime, up to a maximum of one cup (200 ml).
