The EPA document confirms that the Rivian R1T is missing a heat pump

Recently, test documents from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) revealed a number of interesting things about the 2022 Rivian R1T and R1S, including the vehicle's peak DC charge rate and the absence of a heat pump.

As we can see from the documentation, the 2022 Rivian R1T and R1S have a peak DC charge rate of 210 kW, which is exactly the same as the data the company referenced for its proprietary DC Adventure Network. The specifications are similar to Tesla's superchargers, and the Adventure Network was designed specifically by Rivian for its vehicles, though the company has noted that the system could be open to other electric vehicles in the future as well.

However, Rivian is very subtle about the full specifications of the Adventure Network, although the company notes that its fast chargers will provide more than 200 kW of output for the R1T and R1S. That would allow his all-electric pickup truck and SUV to replenish up to 140 miles (225 kilometers) of range in 20 minutes. But Rivian also said further improvements could boost the fast charger to more than 300 kW.

Interestingly, Rivian's EPA test file also specifically describes specific parts of the R1T and R1S heat pumps, but a look at the documentation itself reveals that these vehicles are not equipped with this component. Heat pumps are known to improve the efficiency of electric vehicles in cold environments, so we can next look at how the R1T and R1S maintain power in extremely cold places.

However, in addition to the version of the model, we should also note that the specifications listed in the EPA test document are currently specific to the 2022 Rivian R1T and R1S. Given that the company has been talking about upgrading its fast chargers in the past, and the fact that vehicle designs are rapidly improving, a successful iteration of Rivian's flagship all-electric pickup and SUVs is likely to feature improvements such as peak charge rates that could put him on a par with some of the best in the industry today.
