Mass production now! BYD Semiconductor's independent research and development of chips has become: is it expected to break the monopoly of Mitsubishi?

On December 14, ON Semiconductor successfully developed and mass-produced the 1200V power device driver chip BF1181 on the basis of its previous research and development achievements, and will be able to achieve mass production and supply to major manufacturers in December this year.

BYD said that the BF1181 is a magnetically isolated single-channel gate driver chip for driving 1200V power devices, with good dynamic performance and working stability. In addition, the chip also integrates a variety of functions, such as fault alarm, active Miller clamp, primary and secondary undervoltage protection, etc.

In 2011, BYD Semiconductor successfully developed a 600V power device driver chip, which is widely used in the field of inverter home appliances and other intelligent power module products. The 1200V BF1181 has a wider range of applications and can be applied to EV/HEV power modules, industrial motor control drives, industrial power supplies, solar inverters and other fields.

It is worth mentioning that the BF1181 also integrates analog level detection function, which can be used to achieve temperature or voltage detection, and improve the versatility of the chip, further simplifying the system design, and reducing the chip size and manufacturing cost. Xiao Lei learned that BYD Semiconductor's main product is IGBT chips, and on electric vehicles, the cost of IGBT modules accounts for about 7% to 10% of a complete vehicle. High-voltage IGBT chips can increase motor power density, reduce weight, reduce losses and improve work efficiency.

Previously, this high-voltage direct drive IGBT chip was monopolized by Mitsubishi, many inverter equipment are used in Mitsubishi production of high-voltage drive chips, BYD BF1181 emergence, to a large extent, can break this monopoly situation.

The electric vehicle industry is currently facing a severe core shortage dilemma, which has a greater impact on the delivery of new cars. BYD Semiconductor can independently develop high-voltage power device driver chips, which can not only meet the large number of shipment needs of BYD automobiles, but also sell them to other manufacturers in batches to provide corresponding solutions.

In addition to IGBT, BYD Semiconductor's other major business is the MCU, which is the intelligent control chip of electric vehicles, which determines the level of intelligence of the vehicle. At present, BYD Semiconductor's automotive-grade 32-bit MCU has loaded more than 10 million vehicles, which are widely used in BYD's models, home appliances, communications, consumer electronics and other fields.

Under the rapid development of electric vehicles, chips have become a huge gap at present, and localization of vehicle-grade chips is very important. In the future, there should be more companies entering the research and development and mass production of automotive chips, and BYD will not be the only manufacturer that has succeeded in the global core shortage crisis.
