It didn't take long for Teng Xiyuan to watch his little brother being starved to death. Teng Xiyuan said in an interview in his later years: "Now it is much better than before, and we couldn't even eat at that time." ”
On July 7, 1937, the "Lugou Bridge Incident", Japan launched a full-scale war of aggression against China. Teng Xiyuan's hometown was not spared. Teng Xiyuan witnessed the various atrocities of the Japanese army, and the anger in his heart became more and more intense. Teng Xiyuan secretly made up his mind: I want to join the army and protect my family and country.
In February 1938, Teng Xiyuan, who had just turned 13, came to the registration office for joining the army. Little Teng Xiyuan looked at the staff at the time firmly and said, "I want to sign up for the army." The staff refused: "You are too young to join the army." ”
Teng Xiyuan immediately said, "Although I am young, I have great strength, and I just want to join the army." When the staff saw that Teng Xiyuan could not be persuaded, they had no choice but to say: "You go to our political commissar Liu Zizheng, and if he agrees, you can join the army." ”
Teng Xiyuan listened and immediately went to find Liu Zizheng. Teng Xiyuan looked at Liu Zizheng with a longing look in his eyes and said, "Leader, my two brothers have joined the army, and I will also join the army to defend the country." Liu Zizheng was impressed by Teng Xiyuan's insistence and agreed to sign up for the army at the age of 13.
Because Teng Xiyuan was malnourished since childhood, he grew up black and thin, and his comrades-in-arms called him "Teng Heizi".
