According to Iran's semi-official media Tasnim News Agency on the 21st, Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei announced on the same day that Hussein Salami was appointed to replace Mohammed Ja'afari as the commander of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Born in 1960 in Isfahan Province, central Iran, Salami entered the Iranian University of Science and Technology in 1978 to study mechanical engineering, and joined the Army after the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in 1980 to join the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Before succeeding Ja'afari, Salami was deputy commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Ja'afari has been commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps since 2007.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran was established after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and together with the Iranian Defense Forces constitute the National Armed Forces of Iran. Defending the Islamic Revolutionary regime is the core mission of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on April 8 that the United States has designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization. Iran's Supreme National Security Council announced that evening that it would designate the U.S. Central Command and its troops in West Asia as terrorist organizations.
