"The Fu Lei Prize focuses not only on best-selling books and award-winning books, but also on those fundamental works that represent the stage of civilization." Dong Qiang, chairman of the Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award Organizing Committee, said that only by translating those works can we truly establish a dialogue between countries, otherwise "we can only talk to ourselves." Yesterday, the 13th Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award held a preliminary evaluation press conference, and Wu Jialin, chairman of the jury, unveiled ten shortlisted final evaluation works, which were divided into two major fields: literature and social science.
Social science categories include: Sociologist Didier Eripon's "Return to the Homeland", the author uses a large number of Bourdieu's sociological theories to analyze his family and growth; the author of the Psychoanalytic Private Dictionary is Freud and Lacan biographer and French psychoanalytic leader Elisabeth Ludinescu; "The Doctrine as a Source of Law: The Course of French Jurisprudence" introduces the origin of the term "la doctrine"; "Han Dynasty burial art - Chinese Archaeology (1914) is a study of the burial art of the early Han Dynasty in early China by a team led by the French sinologist Xie Gelan; "The Test of Exoticism: Culture and Translation in the German Romantic Period" tells the history of the formation of modern German and is also a classic of translation studies.
In the field of literature, the writer Eric Emmanuel Schmitt, who has been interviewed by Interface Culture, was selected for his short story collection "Ostend's Dreamer", and at the event site, Yu Zhong, a permanent judge of the Fu Lei Award, first called the Chinese translator of the book "particularly compatible with the writer". Other literary translations include the French writer Marcus Marte's "The Boy", the French writer and member of the French Academy, Paul Mourand's early masterpiece "Tender Storage", the French poet and writer Edmund Abbots's "The Book of Problems", and the children's literature and French youth literature writer Murray's famous work Jean-Claude Mulleva's "In the Direction of the Sea". Dong Qiang analyzed the trends found in the shortlisted books: "Translators are getting younger and younger, paying more and more attention to more and more diverse things, and daring to touch difficult and remote works. ”
Gao Ming, Minister Counsellor for Cultural, Educational and Scientific Affairs of the French Embassy in China and director of the French Cultural Center in Beijing, said that Chinese Simplified is currently the number one language for translating French. Dong Qiang said that he has participated in many awards, and the Fu Lei Award is "unique and fills in the gaps", it has academic guarantees, and also provides a fixed window for French culture and ideas to be transmitted to readers every year. He said that some awards will be suspected of following the trend, but "the Fu Lei Award does not follow the trend", only selecting meaningful and well-translated works published in the previous year. "We judges don't get paid any way either, and we put in it because we feel a duty."
This year's Fu Lei Translation and Publication Awards will be finally announced on November 20 and 21, and this year's award ceremony will be held in Zhoupu Town, Pudong New Area, Shanghai, where Fu Lei's hometown is located. Dong Qiang introduced this year's two special guest judges from Shanghai, and the literary judge was the writer Sun Ganlu. Dong Qiang said that the reason why Sun Ganlu was invited was because his creations, especially his early creations, were deeply influenced by modern French literature, and he had his own pursuit and innovative spirit of language. This year's special jury in the field of social sciences is Liu Qing, a professor at East China Normal University, who said that although Liu Qing returned from graduating from university in the United States and did not do European research, he "has a sharp vision and unique insights, representing the views of current intellectuals."
