Liu Nanqi: Winner of the 9th Spring Wind Yue Reading List "Golden Translator Award"

Winning work: The Book of Problems

Liu Nanqi's home is a few steps from Ditan Park. He liked to walk to the Temple of Earth, find a chair and sit down, and read his translated manuscripts.

On April 24, 2021, the 9th "Spring Breeze Yue Reading List" was announced, and the "Golden Translator Award" was awarded to Liu Nanqi's "Book of Problems" (Pure/Guangxi Normal University Press), which is the work of French poet and scholar Edmund Abbots.

In April 2021, Jin Renshun, chairman of the Jilin Provincial Writers Association, presented awards to Liu Nanqi and Guangxi Normal University Publishing House

There are not many people in Ditan Park, except for the people who practice in the morning, there are more pigeons here. Liu Nanqi took out his own translated draft, read his own translation aloud, and polished the words. Saying goodbye to my phone, facing paper and text, in the quiet park, time slowed down.

Graduated from the Department of Spanish at Peking University in the early 1980s, he devoted half his life to diplomacy, foreign trade and economic cooperation, and translating after retirement is his most important profession after retirement. Since last year, Liu Nanqi has finished teaching at the University of International Business and Economics, brought out the last master's degree, and engaged in translation "professionally". Every day I slept until 9 o'clock, opened the manuscript and started working, and in the evening, I went out for a few kilometers without moving, and continued to read the manuscript at night.

Since around 2013, Liu Nanqi has successively translated six of The Jarbes anthologies, the Baudelaire Epistles, and is now translating the works of the Romanian writer Emil Michel Ziorang.

At the end of 2021, "The Book of Problems" was shortlisted for the final selection of the "Fu Lei Translation and Publication Award". Although he did not win the award in the end, Liu Nanqi did not pay much attention to it, and he continued to do translation work.

The finalists of the Fu Lei Translation Award were selected

As early as when he won the "Golden Translator Award" in Chunfengyue's reading list, he said that Jabes's books were not easy to read, "At the beginning of the translation, I knew that this was a niche, and many of the philosophical, Hebrew mystical ideas, and postmodern content in it were destined to become popular bestsellers." ”

But some readers approached Jabes through Chinese translations, feeling the charm of the literary artist who was on a par with Sartre in the West: "A great deal of reflection on death and writing, and the interpretation of the words themselves." I can only admire it. After waking up in the afternoon, I began to read, without stopping, and the ending appeared: 'A knife in the void, this is the image I want my life and my writing to stay.' Then it was: 'The word darkness is endless. ’”

On the day of the interview, Liu Nanqi faced the camera and read aloud a poem by Baudelaire, "The Harmony of Dusk". At dusk at the Temple of Earth, everything is silent and the spring breeze is gradually rising.

【Spring Breeze Q&A】

Hourly News: Can you tell the story of your encounter with chunfeng yue reading list?

Liu Nanqi: In April last year, I won the "Golden Translator Award" in the Spring Breeze Yue Reading List, and I was very touched. Because it's not just the hobbies of the readers, not just the hard work of the organizers, but also a lot of heavyweight writers - they are members of the jury, and I think what they judge is really heavyweight. I am grateful and grateful to have the honor of winning the award.

I still remember the scene today, Mr. Li Jingze, Mr. Zhang Wei, vice chairman of the China Writers Association, and others gave me a lot of encouragement both on and off the stage. At the same time, I also got to know many important literary scholars, such as Jiang Weishui, Lu Min, Mao Jian, some of whom we are very good friends and often contact together.

So I also take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Chunfeng Yue Reading List! At the same time, I also hope to stand on the node of the tenth year and wish that the Spring Wind Yue Reading List will be better and better in the future!

News: Can you tell us about your recent creative journey?

"The Stranger with a Pocket Book in His Armpit"

Liu Nanqi: Last year's award-winning Book of Problems is the first of my translations of the French literary scholar Edmund Abbots' anthology since 2013. There are six anthologies, two of which were published in 2020, the first book of problems, the second of the book of similarities, and in 2021, the third book of boundaries. At the beginning of this year, the fourth book, "The Stranger with a Pocket Book in his Armpit", and the poetry collection "I Built My Homeland" were also published.

Of the six, there is also the last book, The Book of edges, which will be published within this year. This is what has already been delivered and will be out this year.

Yves Bonafueva

Last year to the present, I have translated a collection of essays by the famous French poet Yves Bonnefoy (1923-), called L'improbable in French. It is a collection of essays on poetry and poets, painters and paintings.

In recent years, in the domestic translation industry, a collection of essays by Yves Bonafuva has been published. I think this translation can also play a small role in the in-depth study of Yves Bonafuva in the Chinese literary and translation circles.

Another one, the Complete Letters of Baudelaire( 2021 marks the 200th anniversary of the poet's birth), which was supposed to be published last year, will be published this year.

Recently, I was working on the Romanian-born French writer Emile Cioran (1911-1995) 'The Regrets of Life' and The Appreciation of The Study. Now I'm doing the translation of these two books.

Ziorang

Hourly News: Can you talk about an interested newcomer or a new book?

Liu Nanqi: I especially want to answer this question. I would like to solemnly recommend a book to you, Fan Guobin, general manager of China Recording Group and president of China Drama Publishing House, a collection of essays published last year, "Benevolent Jianghu". It wrote about his own studies, his teacher (Mr. Ding Fan), and many of his contemporaries, writers, and poets. Among them, he also added a lot of thinking about his own reading.
