The past and present of Phoenix Street.

A few decades ago, Phoenix Street was not as dazzling as the street name, such as the helper trail of Guanqian Street Business Circle and Shiquan Street Craft Street, which was as indifferent as a hermit.

Although, at that time, in the eyes of outsiders, Guanqian Street and Shiquan Street were the image representatives of Suzhou; however, in the eyes of Suzhou people, it seemed that such an elegant and quiet street as Phoenix Street, more Suzhou, had a refreshing taste.

Since the 1950s, Phoenix Street has been widened several times, and until the end of the last century, it has been transformed into the current pattern. Since then, Phoenix Street has turned around gorgeously and followed the trend, and is famous for its food street.

At one time, eating on Phoenix Street was waiting for the "tabletops" to be turned over, and the business was booming like serving a free lunch. If anyone hadn't eaten on Phoenix Street back then, they definitely belonged to the kind of people who couldn't do it.

Phoenix Street

Twenty years have passed, the waves are sandy, I don't know how many bosses are sinking and floating on Phoenix Street, what are the successes? How many silently exited. Happily, several restaurants that sell Su Bang cuisine have become the old brands on Phoenix Street, becoming the main color of the street.

Here's the fried shrimp, all Suzhou a Ding, I don't know what everyone thinks?

A historical relic of Phoenix Street.

The "Ming Building" at No. 101 Phoenix Street, the former residence of Wu Dayi.

Wu Dacheng (1835-1902), a native of Suzhou, was an epoch-making master in the fields of gold stones, calligraphy and painting. He was also a famous courtier of the Qing court, and his contribution to the defense of Xinjiang and the country was called a national hero.

The original site of Wu Zhai was gated on Shizi Street, which was originally the former residence of Jiangsu Inspector Song Jie, three roads and six entrances, which Wu Dacheng bought in 1884. Among them, the lobby of the deep house is a five-bay room, and the wooden structure is made of precious yellow and nan wood, which is said to be an old structure of the Song Dynasty. Wu Dacheng spent eight spring and autumn here. Wu Hufan, the famous calligrapher, collector and connoisseur of cultural relics, spent his adolescence in this old mansion.

Wu House brick carved gatehouse

The Ming Building we see now is only a small part of the former residence of Wu Dayi. Most of the original Wu House has been demolished in several road widening projects. In 1998, the relevant units relocated the remaining fifth and sixth entrances of the remaining middle road to about 400 square meters, and became the part of the current "Ming Lou". The Ming House also includes four bungalows to the south and a three-storey building to the northwest.

Now Ming Lou is known as a successful example of private capital participating in the protection of ancient buildings. However, the ancient buildings and decorations and furnishings of the MingLou mansion are far from the Wu Mansion of that year, and only the three-story brick carved gate tower is the only preserved original in the Wu Mansion, and the brick carving pattern of the "Ant Si Yanqing" inscribed by the Suzhou prefect at that time and the "outgoing tour scene" on both sides and the "Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea" on the three floors are well preserved.

The former site of the frontier building on Phoenix Street (originally in Puqiao West Street).

Although only one piece of the site stele and two ancient ginkgo trees are left, it is still necessary to briefly introduce the owner of the small building, Gu Yuan, and the small building of the frontier to everyone.

Gu Yuan (1799~1851) was a Scholar and Bibliophile of the Qing Dynasty. Suzhou people.
