Dong Biwu is incorruptible in the past

Dong Biwu, a proletarian revolutionary of the older generation, was upright and honest all his life and set an example for the whole party as a true Communist Party member. He left behind many stories of integrity and integrity, only a few.

Honesty and self-discipline, self-denial and public service

During the Long March of the Red Army, Dong Biwu was nearly 50 years old, and he was already an elderly man in that era, and he was even older in the Red Army, but he insisted on following the troops.

At the end of 1934, the Central Column set up a cadre recuperation company, which was actually composed of the elderly and infirm and women, with more than 100 people, of whom more than 30 were women cadres (including Cai Chang, He Zizhen and others, including 4 pregnant women). The relevant departments of the central authorities have selected Dong Biwu, who was once vice president of the Central Party School and is a kind person, to serve as the captain. Because Dong Biwu is old and has a beard, he is jokingly called "Captain Beard" by everyone. During the Long March, Dong Biwu, who was old and in poor health, set strict demands on himself, marching with things as heavy as young people, while also taking care of women cadres and the wounded and sick, organizing the march and accommodation of a stretcher team of more than 120 people carrying 60 stretchers, and also taking in the soldiers who had fallen behind. Every time he went to a camp, he would run around, arrange for food, cooking, sleeping, and vigilance. At night, he would also get up to check the shops and check the sentries. When leaving the garrison, it is necessary to check the mass discipline of the troops, and if there is any forgetting to return, he must personally return it, and if there is damage to the mass goods, he must personally compensate. When marching, Dong Biwu always ran from the front of the team to the back of the team to encourage everyone, and ran back and forth much more than others. Dong Biwu, who is nearly 50 years old, often changes the shoulders of those who carry stretchers. Once, when he was changing the shoulders of the comrade carrying the stretcher, he was too tired to stand on his feet, and suddenly fell into the mud pit, covered with mud. A mischievous team member saw the situation and gave Dong Biwu the nickname of "Clay Man Dong", which caused everyone to laugh, and Dong Biwu also laughed happily with everyone.

The new "three-man regiment" of the Red Army, composed of Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and others, which was established shortly after the Zunyi Conference, was very concerned about Dong Biwu and other veteran comrades, and each of them was equipped with a horse. But Dong Biwu used the horse he had given him to carry the wounded and sick, carry grain, and carry books, while he himself pulled the reins to lead the way. The Central Committee and his comrades repeatedly persuaded Dong Biwu to ride a horse, but he still insisted on walking. During the march, in order to take care of the breeders who were feverish and sick, Dong Biwu gave the horse to the breeder to ride, and he led the horse while holding a wooden stick to pull grass to explore the way. Outside a slope, below was a cliff, and the horses refused to go. He pulled hard, and the horse suddenly ran forward, and he even led the horse downhill, but fortunately it was blocked by the small trees down the slope to avoid a danger.

Staying on the way, the guards considered that Dong Biwu was older and always arranged for him to live in a relatively better house, but Dong Biwu resolutely did not allow it, and took the initiative to live in the most dilapidated house every time. For this reason, every time he went to the garrison, he first had to inspect the residences of his comrades, first, to see if there were any problems with the large accommodation, and second, to see if his own residence was better than others'. If he finds that he is better than others, he does not hesitate to move into a poor house. Twenty-five thousand miles after the Red Army's Long March, Dong Biwu walked on foot with a stick.

In 1935, Dong Biwu served as president of the Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in Yan'an. At that time, the conditions were very difficult, and the president of the party school and the director of the academic affairs office and several other people worked in the same room. As a principal, he could have his own table and sleep in a bed by himself, but Dong Biwu insisted on sharing a table and a bench with the dean of academic affairs, sharing a hard bed to sleep, and eating the same food as the students. He set an example for party school students everywhere.

After the outbreak of the All-out War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the Central Committee transferred him to do united front work. To do this work, it is necessary to deal with senior Kuomintang officers and upper-class people on a regular basis. The senior Officers and upper echelons of the Kuomintang were dressed in bright clothes, wore leather shoes or riding boots on their feet, ate seven or eight dishes, had wine and meat, and had guards in and out of the army who hugged before and after, and were very grand. Dong Biwu wore only patched old military uniforms and patched old cloth shoes to deal with them. He is not humble, and has a calm, atmospheric demeanor. After talking about things, Dong Biwu got up and left, never eating the invitations of high-ranking officials in the upper echelons of the Kuomintang, but going back to eat pickles with his comrades. Some staff members pointed out that dong Biwu dealt with high-ranking Kuomintang officials, and although his clothes were not as glamorous as theirs, he should also wear the new clothes of the Eighth Route Army, and should not wear patched clothes, so that we seem too shabby. Dong Biwu said firmly: "What is the comparison between the Communists and the Kuomintang?" It is better than who is revolutionary, who is more than who really seeks the interests of the hundreds of millions of Chinese people, who is more resolute than who resists Japan, who can win the support of the masses of the people, and who is more generous than anyone. At present, the conditions in Yan'an are difficult, and we must think of the soldiers in the front and the people in the local areas occupied by the Japanese and Kou who have fled the famine and ask for food, and we cannot spend a penny more. ”

Later, Dong Biwu was transferred to the Southern Bureau of the CPC (Eighth Route Army Office) as a member of the Standing Committee of the Southern Bureau of the CPC and secretary of the United Front Work Committee. Life was very hard at that time, and the food expenses of each person in the Eighth Route Army Office were only 3 yuan a month. During the negotiations in Chongqing, Mao Zedong went to the Chongqing Eighth Route Army office and saw that the comrades here were eating very poorly, saying that the food in the Chongqing Eighth Route Army office was worse than that in Yan'an.

Due to the low cost of living, prices in Chongqing often fluctuate, and the daily life of the Eighth Route Army office is often unsustainable. In order to save money and ensure the normal operation of the Southern Bureau of the CPC, the organization decided that Dong Biwu would also be in charge of logistical work. Dong Biwu has a lot of heavy responsibilities, a lot of work, and is very busy every day, but he manages and supervises the food expenses of the office very strictly. He himself took the lead in thrift and thrift, and never spent a penny more. He made a demand on the comrades who handled the food: we must try our best to improve the food of the comrades, and we must not spend a penny indiscriminately. He personally formulated a standard for the food of the organs and implemented the dry-pack adjustment. Economic expenditures must be carefully recorded, and once a month they are accounted for, and must not be overdrawn. The comrades who handled the food strictly followed this requirement. Every month, Dong Biwu has to check the expenditure account. One month, when Dong Biwu checked the accounts of food expenses at the end of the month, he found that he had spent 6 cents more. Dong Biwu was very remorseful because of this incident, saying: "Every penny of our party's funds is bought by comrades with blood, sweat and even life, and we must not waste a penny." Dong Biwu proposed that he should make an inspection at the organ meeting, and some comrades advised: "Spending 6 cents more is not what you spend, and the next time you make up for it, don't check it at the meeting." Dong Biwu said: "I am in charge of logistics work, the responsibility is mine, and the right person is the first to correct myself." He insisted on checking at the assembly. He not only inspected it at the congress, but also wrote a letter of review to the Party Central Committee in his own handwriting. In October 1985, Deng Yingchao returned to Chongqing, and when he met with some of the old comrades who worked in Hongyan during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he recalled the incident with them and said with great emotion: "At that time, dong laodu made a review for the sake of hexagon money, and now some people are not distressed about wasting tens of thousands of yuan, hundreds of thousands of yuan, millions of yuan, and tens of millions of yuan of state assets!" ”

At the end of 1941, in order to improve the living conditions of the leaders of the Southern Bureau of the CPC in Hongyan, Chongqing, the CPC Central Committee, in accordance with the relevant decisions on cadre health care, asked the CPC Southern Bureau to draw up a standard for cadre health care and appropriately increase the living allowance for those leading comrades who were responsible for heavy work. When drawing up this list of subsistence allowances, Zhou Enlai and Dong Biwu took the initiative to ask not to include themselves in it, and their expenditure standards were the same as those of ordinary cadres, and they ate the canteen meals with everyone.

In 1957, Dong Biwu became president of the Supreme People's Court. The organization arranged for his family to live in a former royal palace after the Bell and Drum Tower in Beijing, with many houses, a large yard, and a separate boiler for heating in winter, which was very comfortable and the family was happy. In accordance with the central guard regulations, the Central Guard Bureau arranged for a platoon to live there to take on guard duties. Dong Biwu went to work and drove a car, and the car had to go a long way. However, after a short time, Dong Biwu asked to move to the older house in Zhongnanhai at that time. Dong Biwu's consideration is: the original house is far from the Supreme Court, it is inconvenient to go to work every day, and many people need to run back and forth to send documents, and it takes a lot of gasoline to go to work by themselves. To Zhongnanhai to live is a little narrower, but to work in the high court, nearly half the distance, it also saves half of the gasoline, do not need many people to run back and forth to send documents, do not need to arrange a separate guard platoon, and do not need to burn the boiler separately for heating. After he told the staff around him about this idea, the staff around him were deeply touched by Elder Dong's integrity and self-discipline. His children also learned from him his good character.

In 1964, Dong Biwu inspected Wuhan and on May 8, he went to Macheng to revisit the place where he used to teach. There is a local farm that produces Guishan tea, which is a bit famous. The leading comrades of the farm asked Dong Biwu to take a look and asked him to name the tea. Dong Biwu did not prevaricate and inscribed the three words "Guishan Tea". Before leaving, the farm staff gave him two pounds of guishan tea, and Dong Biwu immediately asked the secretary to pay 8 yuan according to the price. The farm leader said, "This is for you, no money!" Dong Biwu said: "I accept the tea, it is to accept the wishes of all your employees, I must pay according to the price, if I do not collect money, I will not want tea." "Dong Biwu resolutely left the money when he left.

Dong Biwu went out to inspect and always insisted on eating the food of ordinary cadres. In 1964, Dong Biwu inspected the Lushun Naval Base. At lunch, the troops served him with famous dishes and wines. Dong Biwu walked into the restaurant to take a look, immediately returned to his resting room, and refused to eat. He said to his secretary: "The central authorities have clear regulations on cadres inspecting and eating, why are so many wines and dishes served?" If I don't remove the famous wine and famous dishes, I won't eat lunch today. The secretary told the leadership of the naval base of Dong Biwu's opinion. They went to Dong Biwu and explained, "That doesn't cost money." We have a diving squadron, stationed near our guest house, and the soldiers take a mesh bag into the water during diving training and bring a little seafood along the way to improve their lives. This is not a waste. After listening, Dong Biwu said: "I have no objection to the soldiers fishing for themselves and improving their lives on their own, but as leading cadres, we must set strict demands on ourselves." Improving the lives of the soldiers themselves and setting up banquets for leading cadres are two different things. If they all do this, they will eat bad styles. I can't eat such a feast. The leaders of the naval base withdrew the famous wine and famous dishes, leaving only the cadres to inspect the standard meal of the work meal, and Dong Biwu ate this light meal.

In the winter of 1972, Dong Biwu was hospitalized with a cold. The central government considered that the southern climate would be better for Dong Biwu to treat his illness, so it approved him to go to Guangzhou for convalescence and treatment. The CPC Central Committee was ready to arrange a plane to take him to Guangzhou, but Dong Biwu insisted on taking the train. Others were worried that he was old, that he had been taking the train for too long, and that his body could not stand it, and advised him to take a plane. Dong Biwu calculated an account for those who persuaded him: He flew to Guangzhou, and when he arrived in Guangzhou, he would fly back, and he would use a lot of oil and spend a lot of money. You can save a lot of money by taking the train. I go to treat the disease, and I want to put as little burden on the country as possible. He insisted on taking the train to Guangzhou, and after being treated, he also returned by train.

Work hard and complain, do not seek personal gain

Dong Biwu is one of the founders of the Communist Party of China and has very old seniority in the party, but he has never put up "old qualifications" and does not compete for status or reputation. Whatever party organization tells him to do, he does what he does. He always regarded himself as a "supporting role" and "a dragon runner", and worked hard all his life. He always used the "servant of the people" and "old scalper" to encourage himself, and strictly demanded himself in all aspects in accordance with the standards of "servant of the people" and "old scalper". Dong Biwu also compared himself to "an inferior horse" and was ashamed of the position given to him by the party. He has repeatedly made requests to the organization to cancel his special car, full-time secretary, and he has done many things himself, and the staff around him can maintain normal work, to the minimum.

Dong Biwu is not only strict with himself, but also strictly requires relatives, friends, children, and staff around him, and does not allow them to have any special behavior. In his lifetime, Dong Biwu never did a single private affair for his relatives and children. In the past, people knew little about Dong Biwu's strict requirements for his children and relatives. It was not until after Dong Biwu's death that in July 2016, the Life, Reading, and Xinzhi Sanlian Bookstore published the "Book of Dong Biwu's Family", and people saw many stories in this regard from the 68 letters of Dong Biwu included in the book.

After the founding of New China, Dong Biwu's relatives in his hometown learned that Dong Biwu had become a "high official" in the central authorities, and some relatives wrote to him, hoping to get better jobs and treatment through Dong Biwu's connections. Dong Biwu always told them in his reply: We must work in a down-to-earth manner and act honestly and honestly. In 1950, Dong Biwu's cousin Dong Xianzhi, who worked in the Hubei Provincial Supply and Marketing Cooperative, wrote a letter that he wanted to "progress". On May 8 of that year, Dong Biwu wrote back to him, asking him to "study the revolutionary ideology and style well, in a simple word, to learn down-to-earth work and honest service to the people." On June 21, 1952, when he wrote to Dong Xianzhi again, he asked him: "Cooperatives are mass organizations that directly serve the people, and this work is new not only to you, but also to all of us. Therefore, you should try to learn patiently, master the policy, and practice the business, which is very important. Dong Xianzhi listened to Dong Biwu's words and has been performing very well in his work.

Dong Biwu's cousin Dong Xianxu participated in the revolution under the influence of Dong Biwu during the Great Revolution. After the defeat of the Great Revolution, he went to the countryside of Chongyang County to work as a farmer for a living, and lost contact with Dong Biwu. It stands to reason that he was also a man who had participated in the revolution in the early days and could have received some care. After the founding of New China, the state began to engage in construction, and some people were needed to participate in the work in all aspects. In early 1951, Dong Xianxu wrote a letter to Dong Biwu asking him to arrange for him to work in Beijing. On February 13 of that year, Dong Biwu replied to the cousin as follows:

Xianxu Brother:

The letter was received early on The 13th of January, thank you for your thoughts!

The younger brother worked hard to produce and helped the government collect grain, and all of them received results and were well rewarded. There is a lot of work that needs to be built in the rural areas after the land reform, and the rural people's congresses must be well organized, the rural people's governments must be organized, the government must lead and organize the production of agriculture and agricultural and sideline industries, it is necessary to store water and fertilizer, it is necessary to weed and weed to eliminate insects, it is necessary to plant trees and forests, and it is necessary to organize cooperatives well. The aim of the revolution is to seek the liberation of the people, especially the working masses. If many of the things I have written above are not done well in the countryside, the peasants will not be able to fully enjoy the fruits of the revolution.

You now live in the countryside, can read, and must help the local people to complete the tasks called for by their superiors. Di Nu (Li) production, can strive to be a model. Don't abandon the place where the work has its roots, there is no need to come to Beijing at present. Although I am sixty-five years old this year, I can still do something to serve the people. You work hard, the local people know and believe you, the government trusts you, and works everywhere.

Exclusively

That is, say hello close!

Biwu February 13

Dong Xianxu listened to Dong Biwu's words and was at ease working in the countryside. In 1954, Dong Xianxu's hometown suffered from floods, and he himself fell ill again, and wanted to ask Dong Biwu for help, so he wrote to Dong Biwu twice in October of that year, asking for a loan through Dong Biwu's connections. Dong Biwu was ill and could not write a reply in his own handwriting, so on October 24, he asked the secretary to write a reply letter on behalf of the secretary, which read:

Letters of 2 and 14 October were received. You are sick and need to recuperate for a long time.

This year, our country suffered from floods, and the government allocated a lot of grain and material relief, but the area affected by the disaster is large and the population is large, and the relief that each victim of the disaster has received from the government is limited after all, mainly relying on their own efforts to produce to tide over the famine.

The people's bank's loans are mainly to help production, such as asking for loans for agricultural production that lack seeds, farming tools, etc., the bank will definitely consider, such things do not need me to introduce. As for the loan for other purposes, my introduction does not take effect.

Please note that a country is a country of people. Those who work in state organs must serve the people, and no one has privileges other than those prescribed by law. In your mind, this doesn't seem very clear.

In order to save your emergency, I allocated 200,000 yuan (the first set of yuan, about the second set of 20 yuan - the author's note) in my living expenses for you. Of course this will not solve your current difficulties, but what more power do I have to help you? Please think of more ways to do it in the mutual aid group!

Dong Biwu is very strict with his children. He taught his children to have lofty ideals and a fighting spirit, whether they were from literature or martial arts, they must have real skills. "Set great ambitions and ambitions, and prepare to become an indispensable person in socialist society." On January 28, 1963, he also wrote a poem "Three Sons of Characters", which included the following sentences: "Gathering momentum like an eagle falcon, fenfei jianyi zhang", "Wuneng Yuwai insult, Sven is also in Here", "If Pengfei is intentional, the mark points to Tianjin". At the same time, Dong Biwu even demanded that his children not engage in special privileges, but be down-to-earth, learn from the masses of the people, and work hard with the masses. When his eldest son was in college, he applied for long-term deportation on campus, and then wrote to his parents to ask for advice. Dong Biwu immediately replied and readily agreed. He said in the letter: "You want us to give advice, and I agree with you to sign up for the devolution, and I agree with the places you voluntarily delegated." If there is any more opinion, it is that the leadership has decided to delegate you to where to go, and you will go happily and enthusiastically. ”

In the spring of 1969, Dong Biwu's youngest son, Dong Liangfei, graduated from high school. At that time, Dong Biwu was nearly 84 years old, and according to the regulations, his younger son could stay in Beijing to arrange work in order to take care of Elder Dong, but Dong Biwu insisted that the younger son go to the countryside to join the team. Dong Liangfei listened to his father's words, took the initiative to sign up to go to the countryside, and went to The Hejiazhai Brigade of Zhoutou Commune in Jinxian County to join the team and settle down. Before his younger son left, Dong Biwu spoke with him in a special way: "You are a descendant of the revolution, you must set strict demands on yourself, you must be hard and simple in life, you must share weal and woe with the masses, and you must never be superior to others!" "You can't be a special farmer, you can be an ordinary farmer." You have to listen to the old farmer, listen to the captain. Dong Biwu gave his young son an old towel that had been used for many years in the war with patches, and gave him a special inscription, instructing him: When you go to the countryside, you must work hard to produce and be a good farmer. Dong Liangfei went to the countryside of Jinxian County, Hebei Province, to join the team, and worked for 8 years, rarely returning to Beijing. Comrades of Dong Liangfei's production brigade went on a business trip to Beijing, and Dong Biwu, in order to understand Dong Liangfei's situation, invited them to his home and specifically asked Dong Liangfei about his shortcomings in the countryside in order to help him in a timely manner. He also said to these commune and brigade cadres: "You must help Liang fei, he is still young, he must learn from you in his work, you are experienced, be your teacher, teach him to work well in the countryside, participate in agricultural labor, let him still be an ordinary peasant." In his letter to Dong Liangfei, Dong Biwu repeatedly instructed him to work hard to produce and learn from the peasants. Following his father's instructions, Dong Liangfei excelled in the countryside, joining the Communist Party in December 1970 and soon becoming the secretary of the party branch of the production brigade. After Dong Biwu learned of this, he was very happy, but he still wrote a letter to warn him to pay attention to two points: First, do not "be self-conscious", and second, do not "taste and stop". Dong Biwu also wanted Dong Liangfei's son to go to the countryside of Jin County when he grew up. He wrote this verse in a poem to his young grandson: "My parents are in Jin County, and the farmers are busy with the fields." Hope grows up quickly, collaborating left and right hands. My intention is the same, the world is good for the farmers. Sun Liang was quite strong, and Tianyi Fu was greatly created. At the beginning of 1975, Dong Biwu was seriously ill and hospitalized, and Dong Liangfei returned to Beijing to take care of his father, but Dong Biwu said: "You are a local cadre, and you are busy with rural work, and you cannot delay for a long time." I have someone to take care of here, and you still go back to the countryside to work with peace of mind. Dong Liangfei had to say goodbye to his father in tears. Before dong Biwu died, he specifically said to his wife He Lianzhi about how to arrange Dong Liangfei: "Liangfei is a person from Jin County, not a person from Beijing. His affairs should be arranged by the Jin County organization, and we don't have to worry about it. ”

Dong Biwu is also very strict with the staff around him. When he was working in Xibaipo, he once attended a conference in Yetao Town, Wu'an County. The cloth woven by the local people is very good. The local government and the common people took out a few pieces of cloth and gave them to Dong Biwu's guards and secretaries. When Dong Biwu found out, he severely criticized them, asked them to send the cloth back, and warned them that in the future, when they went out to work, whether they were sent by the local government or the people, they could not receive anything.

In 1954, Dong Biwu led a Chinese delegation to visit Bulgaria. The Bulgarian government gave the Chinese delegation 3,000 levs per member and 2,000 levs per attaché as pocket money. People want to use the money to buy some souvenirs. After Dong Biwu learned of this, he said solemnly: "This money cannot be distributed to individuals, but should be handed over to the embassy to save some foreign exchange for the country." We have spent a lot of money on our trip abroad. Let us not forget that shortly after the victory of our revolution, the economy is still very difficult, and the life of the masses is still very hard. The spirit of arduous struggle of our Party cannot be lost! Now that we are in power, we must be even more honest and honest in performing official duties, and use all the money that can be saved to economic construction. "After listening, everyone agreed to send this money to the Chinese Embassy in Bulgaria." On more than one occasion, he also instructed the comrades working around him to use "whether or not to regard the needs of the revolution as personal needs, and whether they do not consider personal gains and losses at all" as a ruler to test whether he has established a revolutionary outlook on life. Dong Biwu often encouraged the staff around him to pay close attention to studying, hoping that they would find time to read three to five pages of books every day. At the same time, they were also given three chapters of the law: First, they were not allowed to ask for things from the local authorities; second, they were not allowed to engage in special activities in any department under the guise of their own name; and third, they were not allowed to accept gifts.

"Sex is used to frugality, frugality to cultivate honesty"

Dong Biwu, who loves calligraphy, often writes such 8 characters as "Sex is accustomed to frugality, thriftiness to cultivate incorruptibility". These 8 words are Dong Biwu's self-encouragement, and also reflect his lifelong frugal habits.

When Dong Biwu participated in the Long March, he personally carried a horse carriage made of thick canvas. In addition to the books he liked to read, and a patched dress he had changed into, there were rags and brown patches that he had picked up, as well as a sewing kit he had used during the Agrarian Revolutionary War, which he used to mend his clothes and shoes between battles. He used these things to make special straw shoes and saved the grass shoes issued by the troops for others to use. When asked, he said, "These things are useful, tie a brown flake with a cloth, and you can wear it to continue the march." Comrades called it Elder Dong's "treasure bag," and he gladly accepted it. Dong Biwu brought this "wanbao bag" to Yan'an and then to Beijing. He has also maintained the habit of picking up old things and putting them into the "treasure bag". After the founding of New China, this "treasure bag" is still preserved at home. It was not until after Dong Biwu's death that his family donated the "WanbaoBao" with yellowed corners and gray stains to the Dong Biwu Memorial Hall in Hong'an County, Hubei Province.

During the Yan'an period, Dong Biwu only spent one yuan to buy an old nostalgic watch for the convenience of work. This pocket watch is not very accurate, but Dong Biwu has been using it, saying: "Anyway, as long as the error is not more than half an hour." ”

Dong Biwu liked to compose poems, but he never used public paper to write poems, but wrote them on various shapes of waste paper, old envelopes, old calendars, and outdated invitations. He wrote more than 1,300 poems from 1939 to 1975. These poems were written by himself on the above-mentioned discarded paper.

Dong Biwu loves calligraphy and writes well. But except for the formal inscriptions given to some units at a few times, he never wrote calligraphy on white paper or rice paper, but wrote it in the old newspaper. The big letter wrote the middle letter, and the small letter was inserted in the middle letter, and a newspaper was densely written. The brush he used, the tip of the pen fell off and did not throw it away, he repaired it himself and used it as well. When the staff around him advised him to throw away the old pen that could no longer be used, Dong Biwu said: "A pen is not worth much." However, in our large country of hundreds of millions of people, each person saves a little, and it is not a small number when added up. Everyone should cherish the wealth of society. ”

Dong Biwu was very frugal in his use. Toothpaste is used until it can't be squeezed out, and a washbasin has been used for decades. He wears cloth shoes all year round, and when the sole is thinned, he adds a layer. Towel broken hole, repair it and continue to use. Towels are used to wash faces first, old ones are used to wipe hands, and then when they are worn, they are cut in the middle and connected to wipe their feet. Dong Biwu not only frugal himself, but also taught his children to develop the habit of frugality. After his children went to school, from elementary school to college, the family never gave other change, snacks, and consumables except for daily necessities such as toothpaste, towels, and the fare for the bus to and from the bus. When his son went to study in other places, Dong Biwu only gave tuition, food and a little other necessary money, but required that the money must be booked. Dong Biwu told his children this truth: Develop the habit of bookkeeping, when you want to use money in the future, you will start from reality, and you will not think about the needs and take into account the possibilities.

After the founding of New China, Dong Biwu held many important leadership positions. He also served as Vice President and Acting President of the People's Republic of China. Although his position is getting higher and higher, he still maintains the habit of hard work, simplicity, diligence and thrift. After he entered the city, he made a long coat due to his overseas visit, and did not make any other coats, only this coat accompanied Dong Biwu until his death.
