Dong Zhou Cairen, a 13-year-old boy from the Varitan Orphans Welfare School in Zaduo County, Yushu Prefecture, Qinghai, lost his hearing in his right ear and missed his outer ear. On the afternoon of December 29th, with the help of enthusiastic citizens of Nanjing, Jiangsu Charity Federation, Jiangsu Ruihua Charity Foundation, and Zhongda Hospital Affiliated to Southeast University, Dongzhou Cairen went to Nanjing accompanied by the president of the welfare school, Yingran Zhou, and his grandmother (grandma, also known as grandma) to Nanjing, and began his dream journey of external ear reconstruction...

Qinghai Yushu 13-year-old Tibetan boy lainingyuan "dream of making ears"

Chief Physician Wang Lei conducted a preliminary examination for Eastern Zhou Cairen.

The 13-year-old Tibetan boy has one less ear

Speaking of this dream journey, we must start from the story of Mr. Wu Suhua, a "good citizen of Nanjing" and "a character who touched Nanjing". When Elder Wu was young, he had served as a cavalryman in Yushu, so he had a "Yushu complex" since then, and he would return to Yushu almost every year to see.

Elder Wu met Qun Yingran Zhou, principal of Varitaan Orphan Welfare School in Yushu Zaduo County, and in July 2017, at the invitation of Principal Qun Yingran Zhou, Elder Wu revisited the Varitan Orphan Welfare School in Zaduo County. At school, Elder Wu met an 11-year-old Tibetan boy, Dong Zhou Cairen. "It was that time, the boy who missed his right ear, caught my attention." Elder Wu introduced.

According to principal Qun Yingran Zhou, Cairen is a bitter child, from a single-parent family, his mother went out to work, was raised by his grandmother (Tibetan called grandma is also a grandmother), and the family has a younger brother and a younger sister, and the family is very poor. Cai Ren's right ear has lost hearing since childhood, and his outer ear is mutilated, and he only relies on his left ear to maintain his hearing.

Love Relay Helps Him Realize an "Ear Dream"

How to help him? Elder Wu thought of a looser hair that had the same experience as him. On August 1, 2011, Wu Suhua also found a 9-year-old Tibetan girl with a severely mutilated nose at this welfare school. After he returned to Nanjing, he actively contacted forces from all walks of life to help her solve problems such as nasal defects and scoliosis, and now the hair has been completed into a big girl.

As a result, Elder Wu began to worry about how to solve the problem of Cai Ren's right ear missing. In the past two years, after many efforts to find a choice, I finally found the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University this summer. Elder Wu repeatedly communicated and discussed with Wang Lei, director of the Department of Plastic Surgery of the Zhongda Hospital affiliated to Southeast University, to discuss the child's condition. After learning about the situation of Dongzhou Cairen, cuccidly agreed to the matter, saying that it would use the hospital's ear reengineering brand advantage technology, which has a great influence in the country, to provide good medical protection for Cairen in all aspects. In terms of treatment costs, the ear reconstruction charity project of Jiangsu Ruihua Charity Foundation in CUHK hospital was fully resolved.

The problem of treatment costs is solved, but there are problems such as transportation costs, accommodation costs, and living expenses. Because Zaduo County is 280 kilometers away from Yushu Prefecture and 1100 kilometers away from Xining City, the capital of Qinghai Province, the road is far away, and the child's surgery in Nanjing may be two or three stages, requiring multiple trips between Yushu and Nanjing, this cost is also impossible for the Cairen family to bear. Wu Lao, who helped people to the end, contacted the Jiangsu Charity Federation, and finally the Jiangsu Charity Foundation Federation gave funding, and the first phase of 30,000 yuan of relief money has been entered into cairen's account.

Cartilage makes the ears, and the doctors hand-sculpt them

How to help Cai Ren realize his dream of rebuilding an ear? Which treatment is more suitable for him? On the morning of December 30th, during the hospital-wide general consultation organized by the Medical Department of CUHK Hospital, the doctors reviewed and inquired about Cairen's situation, put forward treatment suggestions, and discussed the best treatment plan together.

"The patient's loss of the right outer pinna is congenital microtia, which belongs to the 3rd degree microtia. Depending on the patient's situation and the shortest possible treatment time, it was decided to perform external ear reconstruction surgery for the patient. Professor Leng Yongcheng, a well-known burn plastic surgery expert and 90 years old, suggested after preliminary examination.

Wang Lei, director of the Department of Plastic Surgery of CUHK Hospital, introduced that the external ear reconstruction surgery that will be performed for Cairen will be carried out in three stages. After completing the various examinations for admission, on January 2, 2020, a phase of surgery was performed, using the direct burial method, the rib cartilage was taken and implanted behind the ear, and the ear on the affected side was carved according to the ear on the normal side. The first stage is about 20 days hospitalized, and the second stage of surgery is performed half a year later. In the second stage of surgery, by taking the skin graft on the chest and re-implanting the rib cartilage, etc., a "base" is added to the "lying ear" and let it "stand up". After the second stage of surgery, the ear is basically formed. Three stages of surgery, re-trimming the ear. About a year later, after three stages of surgery, Cai Ren will have a pair of ears that are basically similar and symmetrical.
